To ask what temp your house is?

This is an annual argument for us starting around this time of yr.

The central heating is set at 20 degrees. The thermometer in the hall reads 72 degrees Fahrenheit. I am a bit warm but I can cope just about with a light skirt and t shirt on. DH is cold and is wearing a long sleeved t shirt with a chunky jumper and fleece lounge trousers, socks and slippers.

I know he is cold. But he insists that the house is cold whilst I maintain it isn't. 72 degrees just isn't cold is it? When he is at work I have the windows open for air flow but when he is home he has them closed and turns the heating up.

How can he be cold? Why is he cold? And do others have this problem? He is retiring soon and will want to spend Jan-March with the heating up and the windows closed all the time Confused and I will feel suffocated. Anyone else reached a successful compromise?

HattieBugatti · 08/10/2018 10:25

I can't believe some set it at 25 degrees C. Shock I would be suffocating! And surely it would virtually always be on during the Autumn and Winter months? Confused

DH is always cold and I am always hot, so it is a bit tricky to know what to set it at, and I HATE it coming on in the night! We sleep in separate bedrooms, and I switch the radiator off in my room at night, as the heat, (from the heating coming on in the night) wakes me up. I literally wake up sweating.

DH's snoring, rolling about kicking me, and the fact we have completely different body temperatures, means we are better off sleeping apart. When we slept in the same bed, and the heating came on, I felt like I was being boiled alive from the inside.

And in answer to the OP's question - we set the thermostat at around 15 C in the day, and 12 C at night. IMO, there is no need for it to be on during the night at all really, unless the temperature outside drops below fridge temperature (so like below 5 degrees C.)

Oliversmumsarmy · 08/10/2018 10:33

I hate the cold.

This summer I was walking without pain. I got do much done. I could work.

Now i am in pain. Can't work. Am back to hobbling around. The idea of being only in a room at 19 or 20 degrees sounds positively Arctic

DunesOfSand · 08/10/2018 10:34

@thisneverendingsummer nope, I suspect it's the temperature in Kelvin. So about 20C.

I'm desperate for this house to be less than 25C. The A.C. broke last week. It was 30 for a bit. I struggled to cook dinner, clean etc in that. But it still felt cool when coming in from outside. Roll on winter when we might get a few weeks not needing A.C.!

thisneverendingsummer · 08/10/2018 10:37

@Beebopdooowopdo

I think the same temperature feels different at different times of year. For example, if my house is 18degrees in the summer it is perfectly fine and warm. No heating on. In the winter, 18degrees has me reaching for my slippers and a blanket and I pop the heating on. Possibly because the draught turns cold! So my heating is set to come on when it drops to 17.5 degrees. I am cold but I suck it up.

Weirdly, I get this.

17-18 degrees C in June feels pleasant and warm, and you can even go out with bare arms. But 17-18 degrees C in November feels different. You can feel the warmth from the sun, but the air feels different somehow; there is a slight dampness, and a winter feel about it, even though it's a decent temperature.

Also, I have solar lamps in my back garden, and the sun they get on them between March and September does them just fine, and they stay alight 24/7.

The sun they get on them during the late Autumn/Winter (so October to February,) doesn't seem to cut the mustard so much. and they die off after a few weeks. The batteries from the solar lamps need charging (in the battery charger,) around every 3 weeks during the 4 months of late Autumn and winter, because even when the sun is out, it's quite weak.

LaurieMarlow · 08/10/2018 10:39

19/20 during the day, 17 at night. It's a very well insulated house though so toasty at those temps.

I hate being cold. And it's not just as simple as wearing another jumper. When you're cold in your bones another jumper is fuck all use.

Davespecifico · 08/10/2018 10:40

I like 21.5 at least. DP likes 20.

user1471426142 · 08/10/2018 10:40

Around 20-21 when we’re in during the day. We’ve got a smart thermostat which I love. We’ve got it programmed to come on just before we get home from work, have home and away temps set and can set it to our lives. I’d definitely recommend. We got it after going away one week over Christmas and coming back into a house that was freezing. We had to keep the baby in a snowsuit for hours. Now we can just turn the heating up before we set foot in the house.

Dontbuymesocks · 08/10/2018 10:41

Mine is set to 18.5 but it’s on from 6.30am to 9.30pm. It’s a cold house and it stays warmer this way than having it on a higher temperature for a shorter time. The bills are pretty much the same too!

Merryoldgoat · 08/10/2018 10:46

@Ariela - I wear light clothes in the house.

I suppose I’m exaggerating a bit, in that my house is insulated very well so I don’t need the heating lots - my kitchen is south facing with a big window, and my tumble dryer heats the place up masses. So I don’t have the heating on all the time.

Even so, it’s very warm in my house so I have fans on a lot.

In the winter/colder weather it can get hot but I am one of those ‘cold’ people that everyone hates so it probably feels to me like 19 does to normal people.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 08/10/2018 10:47

At the moment, 22 degrees.

bananafish81 · 08/10/2018 11:38

The 'put a jumper' on - if I've got two pairs of socks and three layers of jumpers on already, how much more can I realistically get on without coming home from work and changing into ski gear?!

And that's with the thermostat at 20!

Gottagetmoving · 08/10/2018 11:44

My DP is too warm, I'm too cold.
Our heating is on 19 deg. but only first thing in the morning and in the evening. It's off most of the day. I will wear a jumper if I feel chilly.
He wears a t shirt even when the weather is below zero.
I will turn heating up to 21 when it gets to December.

seventhgonickname · 08/10/2018 11:51

Thus time if year the house sits at 15-18 without heating.During the day this is fine as moving about means it's just right.I put have the heating set to 18 at 4pm when did comes home from school and 20 at 6pm as we will be sitting reading/TV/homework then heating off at 10pm.
The radiators are off in the hall, spare room and my room ,the hall one goes on in winter but the others stay off.
But agree that 18 in summer feel different to 18 8n winter.

lexi727 · 08/10/2018 11:57

Mine is at 22 but well insulated as well. If your house isn't well insulated then it doesn't matter what temperature your heating is set at, the house will never reach it/if it does it won't last longer. Are your windows a bit drafty? 20 degrees would definitely be fine but only if the heat isn't escaping

littlemissblue · 08/10/2018 12:08

Ours isn't on at all yet :( my husband is hot blooded and works from home so he moans if I put it on and just tells me to put more clothes on. I feel miserable when cold - only want it 18-20! :/

We move at the end of oct and he's said I can put it on when I want to then - believe it when I see it!!!

peachgreen · 08/10/2018 12:12

Heating is at 16 most of the time - up to 18 for a couple of hours in the morning and evening. We occasionally boost it to 20 for an hour or so on a really cold evening. Can't stand a too hot house. That's what jumpers are for.

Babyshark2018 · 08/10/2018 12:19

Peachgreen 16! I would be frozen. I came home yesterday after being away and the thermostat said 17, it felt freezing like being outside.

I like 22/23 as I like to lounge around the house in leggings/ Tshirt. A jumper won’t keep your hands and face warm.

DH and I argue over the heating a lot he says I must be ill if I complain it’s cold. He’s one of those people who leave the house in shorts and a tshirt in winter.

stayathomer · 08/10/2018 12:23

Your DH should wear a jumper but if he's still cold you should turn the temperature up! It's so hard to get warm sometimes and people who are warm by nature don't get how lovely it is when you finally get toasty!!!(I'm cold, DH is like a radiator, we have this all the time!!)

stayathomer · 08/10/2018 12:24

*Ours isn't on at all yet sad my husband is hot blooded and works from home so he moans if I put it on and just tells me to put more clothes on. I feel miserable when cold - only want it 18-20! :/

littlemiss sneak it on sometimes, we have this issue too, it's no way to live!!!!!!

puzzledlady · 08/10/2018 12:25

23/24.

stayathomer · 08/10/2018 12:26

*The 'put a jumper' on - if I've got two pairs of socks and three layers of jumpers on already, how much more can I realistically get on without coming home from work and changing into ski gear?!

And that's with the thermostat at 20!*

That's it! I know heating costs money but what the hell are we living for if we're going around feeling miserable all winter! If everyone's layered up enough and the colder person is still cold I honestly thik the colder person should get precedence, it's easier for the warmer person to take off a layer!!

peachgreen · 08/10/2018 12:32

Our house has really thick old concrete walls so it does retain heat really well and rarely drops below 17. But it's 17.5 right now and I'm sitting in a short sleeved t-shirt dress perfectly comfortably! I don't mind being toasty in the evenings but I'm busy during the day so I hate being too warm.

Drummingisfun · 08/10/2018 12:36

We've not got the heating on yet. I refuse until half term.
When it does go on, it's normally set to 19 or 20 and off overnight.

I am a really cold person, I think I have bad circulation as my toes and fingers often go white when it's cold. I just wear extra layers because the house is too hot for dc if we turn it up further.

BestBeforeYesterday · 08/10/2018 12:42

Your DH should get his thyroid checked.

Cachailleacha · 08/10/2018 12:45

Heating isn't on yet but when it is I set it to 17 degrees.
