To ask what temp your house is?

This is an annual argument for us starting around this time of yr.

The central heating is set at 20 degrees. The thermometer in the hall reads 72 degrees Fahrenheit. I am a bit warm but I can cope just about with a light skirt and t shirt on. DH is cold and is wearing a long sleeved t shirt with a chunky jumper and fleece lounge trousers, socks and slippers.

I know he is cold. But he insists that the house is cold whilst I maintain it isn't. 72 degrees just isn't cold is it? When he is at work I have the windows open for air flow but when he is home he has them closed and turns the heating up.

How can he be cold? Why is he cold? And do others have this problem? He is retiring soon and will want to spend Jan-March with the heating up and the windows closed all the time Confused and I will feel suffocated. Anyone else reached a successful compromise?

Between 18&20 is warm enough for us. At 20 I wouldn't wear a jumper.

PlainVanilla · 08/10/2018 07:06

General temperature is 19°c, bit warmer in the bathrooms when in use. Stays fairly constant. If it is really cold outside, say below freezing, I might turn up the heating in the sitting room to 21°c.
However, I will always be warmly dressed and am not averse to donning my ski socks if sitting, working.

kaytee87 · 08/10/2018 07:07

Forgot to say it's set to 14 or 15 at night

Methe · 08/10/2018 07:07

17-20 depending on what we’re doing.

Methe · 08/10/2018 07:08

But it’s always off at night.

speakout · 08/10/2018 07:09

Why do people need heating on at night?

Unless you have an infant, I don't see the need.

bakingdemon · 08/10/2018 07:10

@monkeysox I'm with you! We haven't yet put the heating on as our house is still fine and will hope not to til November. Then it will go on twice a day 0600-0800 and 1730-2200 at about 20 degrees. We will occasionally put it on for longer at the weekend if we're both in and it's really cold, but we both have a lot of cosy jumpers and will always put on another one before we turn up the heating. I think it's really wasteful (both of money and energy) to expect to wear just a t shirt indoors in the winter.

kaytee87 · 08/10/2018 07:13

@speakout if my thermostat is set to 14/15 at night it wouldn't actually click on unless it was below that temperature which has only ever been on very cold winter nights. i do have a 2yo though

speakout · 08/10/2018 07:15

I don't have overnight heating on at all- no matter what the outside temperature is.
I have good duvets.

Cheeseplantandpickle · 08/10/2018 07:16

17-18

Cheeseplantandpickle · 08/10/2018 07:17

Just checked the Nest, it’s 15 at the moment.

StoneofDestiny · 08/10/2018 07:21

No heating on at all, south facing house with lots of glass and unbelievable level of insulation. Even in winter it's hot.

Merryoldgoat · 08/10/2018 07:23

I love the moral posturing about heating.

Luckily my husband and I both like a warm house so it’s around 24 most of the time, lower at night but not much.

Our house holds the heat very well though so even in the coldest weather doesn’t drop too much.

MemoryOfSleep · 08/10/2018 07:25

Ordinarily set to 18.

shirleyschmidt · 08/10/2018 07:34

Same arguments starting here but other way around. DH and I have been turning the thermostat up and down like the fairies switching Sleeping Beauty's dress colour 🤪 I cannot understand how he can sit there in a t shirt when it's freezing outside and declare we don't need the heating on?! He tells me I'm nuts and to layer up.

Anyway it's usually around 22, give or take depending on who wins the day, and I'd always have it warmer if I could!!

Nenic · 08/10/2018 07:37

Set to 21 but boost it a lot. I grew up in a cold house as mum didn’t like it warm. I wore gloves to bed. No way am I putting my family through that. I was miserable

minniebow · 08/10/2018 07:37

Between 5-10 degrees. It’s freezing and it’s making my chest infection worse. I’m afraid I’ll get pneumonia this year because of my useless LL (no heating) Sad

LesLavandes · 08/10/2018 07:44

I'm freezing this morning in my house. Haven't turned heating on yet as it's oil and I live in a big draughty houseFires will be lit later. Aga on in kitchen.

ivykaty44 · 08/10/2018 07:45

No heat on and woke this morning it is 17 degrees, which is fine as I usually set heating at 18

PiperPublickOccurrences · 08/10/2018 07:48

20 during the day. The thermostat dips to 13C at night but it never really gets cold enough in the house to click the heating on automatically overnight - and we're in Scotland.

I would be far too warm in 22 or 24 during the day and more so at night. Cannot bear sleeping in heated bedrooms.

speakout · 08/10/2018 07:49

I grew up in a house with no central heating. One single coal fire in the living room.
I remember scraping ice from the inside of my bedroom window.

Baths were hideous, the bathroom could be 5 degrees in winter,
It was hideous.

I like to be warm.

Notatallobvious · 08/10/2018 07:50

Currently effing freezing ☃️ DH insists on not putting the heating on until the clocks change, so we have an ongoing war until then. I turn it on...he turns it off....etc. It's set to 20 degrees, although the thermostat is in the hall and it's an old system, so we end up with it roasting upstairs and still cold in the lounge. The whole thing needs replacing, I would love a house that just maintains a pleasant temperature!

BarooSaidTheBear · 08/10/2018 07:51

between 18 and 20.

bananafish81 · 08/10/2018 07:53

Why do people need heating on at night

Er, not to be cold?

Already have a 9 tog duvet and full PJs and socks and a jumper (extra bit of the all seasons duvet will go on when it's properly winter, so that'll be 13.5 tog)

I get up for a wee at least 1-2 times a night - would rather not have to freeze my arse off in the process

SinglePringle · 08/10/2018 07:56

I don’t feel the cold particularly, apart from my feet. I wear Ugg slippers at home.

I’ve yet to put the heating on and sleep with the window open. First thing I did this morning was open the French doors and bathroom window.

Not virtue signaling, I just don’t feel the cold so much - I’ll put it on when I feel it.
