To ask what temp your house is?

This is an annual argument for us starting around this time of yr.

The central heating is set at 20 degrees. The thermometer in the hall reads 72 degrees Fahrenheit. I am a bit warm but I can cope just about with a light skirt and t shirt on. DH is cold and is wearing a long sleeved t shirt with a chunky jumper and fleece lounge trousers, socks and slippers.

I know he is cold. But he insists that the house is cold whilst I maintain it isn't. 72 degrees just isn't cold is it? When he is at work I have the windows open for air flow but when he is home he has them closed and turns the heating up.

How can he be cold? Why is he cold? And do others have this problem? He is retiring soon and will want to spend Jan-March with the heating up and the windows closed all the time Confused and I will feel suffocated. Anyone else reached a successful compromise?

20 genuinely feels miserably cold to me, unless I'm under a duvet. Anything under 22 is too cold. 22-25 I'd be wearing a jumper.

I have moved abroad and got used to warmer temperatures than the UK, and 25 isn't stifling here. But I do remember feeling freezing cold in my old house and wondering why because the thermometer said 20 and that was supposed to be "normal".

SpoonBlender · 08/10/2018 09:00

Thermostat is set to 18.5C, but it's in a slightly cooler area of the house and actual living room temp winds up at 19C which thankfully suits us both perfectly.

Amazed by the 22-23C brigade - I know people like that too, but I couldn't live in it!

BertieBotts · 08/10/2018 09:02

@minniebow :( no heating isn't right. If you're in England perhaps you could follow the advice on this page from Shelter. I know they have advice for Scotland as well.

You could live in it.

I lived in rural SE for a while, temperature was 33 degrees all year round. No air conditioning.

I managed.

BertieBotts · 08/10/2018 09:09

I don't have a lot of body fat and I do tend to be sat still when I'm at home - so probably that contributes. If you're more active then you're probably comfortable at a cooler temperature.

LemonysSnicket · 08/10/2018 09:17

No idea, we won't switch the heating on until the weather hits at least 0.

LemonysSnicket · 08/10/2018 09:19

When we do put it on it's at 16 and we wear dressing gowns or nothing - we're both hot blooded though and sleep with a fan in winter.

Tinty · 08/10/2018 09:23

I haven't turned the heating on yet this year. It hasn't gone below 16 in my house on the coldest days yet. We generally have it on at 18 for an hour in the morning then off all day and on again at 18 for 3 hours in the evening when it gets cold, it is off overnight but set to come on if the temp drops below 12 at night.

We snuggle up in big jumpers and cosy dressing gowns in the winter.

We still sleep with the windows open in our bedroom (no heating on), unless it is really windy or freezing.

soundsystem · 08/10/2018 09:24

Haha DH and I were having this exact discussion last night. I grew up in a "put a jumper on" household and he grew up in a sauna. Although it's a moot point at the moment as we're mid-building work and without a roof/glazing at the back of the house... Even I will admit it was a bit chilly last night (although one child went to bed in short/T-shirt pyjamas).

I think of "room temperature" as 21C so don't think that could be considered cold. Ours is normally 18, unless PiL are visiting, in which case it's 23 and we give them warm socks, jumpers, blankets, hot water bottles and frequent hot drinks (our house just doesn't get hotter than that, regardless of what we set it to!)

GoldenBuns · 08/10/2018 09:26

The thermostat is reading 15 degrees at the moment, but our boiler is broken Sad. Normally it would be set to 18.5 if people are in during the day and 19 in the evening. I suffocate if it gets any hotter.

Currently, I have two jumpers on and am wrapped in a blanket!

tierraJ · 08/10/2018 09:27

I like the temperature to be 22 or 23c.

I get cold really quickly & my fingers get tingly!

Ariela · 08/10/2018 09:28

@Merryoldgoat
At 25 how on earth do you manage to do things like hoovering without breaking into a sweat? (Or do you have a cleaner?)

GoldenBuns · 08/10/2018 09:34

Also, we don't generally have the heating on at night. If the temperature is below zero I will put it on for fear of the pipes freezing. I also turn our radiator off in our room at night - if I wake up in a warm room I get a head ache. As soon as I get up, I whack the temperature up!

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 08/10/2018 09:35

Thermostat is currently set to 16°c day & night. When it starts to get properly cold we'll change it to 18/19°c in the day. I like wearing jumpers & slippers. It's a cold house if the sun isn't out though, it will go down to 12°c in a mild winter & got down to about 5/6°c overnight during the snow last December (when our boiler packed up) we had heaters in the bedrooms, that's what the lounge was. If I'm cold I will stick it on though.

Deadbudgie · 08/10/2018 09:40

Temp gauge in hall showing 16.6 c. However, when it gets cold we put on a jumper use a blanket on the sofa, thicker duvet etc. Then the log burner goes on which heats the ground fooor and stairwell well. I’m amazed though at the “I want to wear a t shirt in the house in December brigade” on a day were warned we have 10 years to save the planet!

maxthemartian · 08/10/2018 09:42

@BertieBotts I'm the same as you. Was abroad in a hot country for a bit. Bliss apart from needing a jumper for the ferocious aircon in the malls!

If I'm at home putting on another jumper doesn't work for me. I don't seem to have enough internal heat or something. I need the external temperature to warm me.
I have it at 23/24 mostly but I do turn it down overnight.

maxthemartian · 08/10/2018 09:43

@Deadbudgie I know it's not great in planetary terms but I'm chronically ill and I really suffer otherwise Sad

grasspigeons · 08/10/2018 09:47

it depends what I am doing

In the evening just sat watching TV, I like a toasty 22 and put a fluffy jumper on too

At night we don't heat the house and it goes down to about 12 degrees but any colder I put the heat on.

Rushing about in the morning and getting out the house I like about 18

Just pottering about I go for 20.

Bobbybear10 · 08/10/2018 09:53

We don’t have the heating on as such we turn it on for an hour or so when needed (obviously in the depth of winter it will be on pretty much constantly) but we have a thermometer in the main rooms and keep the temperature to 19/20/21.

I find I have to have the bedroom window open most of the year as I need it really cold to be able to breathe clearly when I’m sleeping.

cholka · 08/10/2018 09:55

We've had the heating on for 1/2 hr in the mornings so far and nothing else.
Can your husband just layer up more? Fleece trousers won't be that warm. Proper wool jumper, thick trousers and maybe thermal vest and long johns, scarf, long sleeve top, thick socks... It's not right to have the heating on constantly.

Oliversmumsarmy · 08/10/2018 10:01

Thermostat doesn't work so it just gets hotter and hotter then switch it off for an hour then when it gets colder it goes on again.
Normally though it was always set at 30. I can't function at anything less

onanothertrain · 08/10/2018 10:11

Another one with a broken boiler, thermostat say it's 15 degrees. Missing hot water more than the heating though. Engineer not coming until tomorrow Sad

thisneverendingsummer · 08/10/2018 10:19

20 genuinely feels miserably cold to me, unless I'm under a duvet. Anything under 22 is too cold. 22-25 I'd be wearing a jumper.

Have you had your iron levels checked? Because that's not normal. 20 degrees C is not cold, and you definitely need to see a doctor if you think you need to wear a jumper when it's 25 degrees C.

Me and DH have ours set at 15 in the day, around 10 at night.

thisneverendingsummer · 08/10/2018 10:19

@donquixotedelamancha

Our heating is set to 293k. Your DH should wear a jumper.

Did you put the value of your house instead of the temperature? Grin

Beebopdooowopdo · 08/10/2018 10:23

I think the same temperature feels different at different times of year. For example, if my house is 18degrees in the summer it is perfectly fine and warm. No heating on. In the winter, 18degrees has me reaching for my slippers and a blanket and I pop the heating on. Possibly because the draught turns cold! So my heating is set to come on when it drops to 17.5 degrees. I am cold but I suck it up.
