A post I reported did get deleted a couple of days ago, but it was particularly bad. I'm very glad to have got the whole removed from my Active view - much better.

Limaloma1 · 02/10/2018 23:05

Thanks Worraliberty I've tried but it's not worked. I will have a go on laptop tomorrow.

SummerGems · 02/10/2018 23:08

I do wonder if this thread should be flagged up to MN HQ or whether there is a way to see how many people have hidden certain topics.

After all if you don’t view a topic then you’re likely not to see posts which need reporting which means that less of the vile nature of the feminist boards come to MN HQ’s attention. (Although hiding the topic is still a positive thing for the individual.) but if they are able to see how many posters have it hidden then perhaps something can be done about it.

I used to be a moderator on another site where users had the option to ignore/hide other users. We as mods were able to see how many people were ignoring certain users and in some instances we even removed users because so many others had them on ignore due to the vile nature of many of their posts.

IMO if a topic is considered to be promoting prejudice and hate speech then it, and the users who persist in posting on those threads need to go.

BackforGood · 02/10/2018 23:13

The fact that you’ve turned a thread where an OP who is struggling has asked for help, into a complaint about transgenderism is illustrative of why so many people see the feminist boards as exclusionary, hostile and single-minded to the extreme.

Well put AuntBeastie.

Hayles88 · 02/10/2018 23:27

AuntBeastie well said! Thanks OP for this thread, I've removed them to, all it is is the same transphobic conversation on repeat.

bananafish81 · 02/10/2018 23:35

Ooh this is great, I'd missed this feature, as I pretty much exclusively use the app

I'd love to hide the pregnancy and antenatal topics because I suffer from infertility and lots of failed IVF - so I'd love to be able to hide these so they don't come up in Active

Elephantinacravat · 03/10/2018 07:23

IMO if a topic is considered to be promoting prejudice and hate speech then it, and the users who persist in posting on those threads need to go.

There is a thread at the moment where MN have asked its users why they use the site - there are 850 posts on there and about 90% of those posts refer to the feminism boards as a reason they stay on MN.

If you don't like the FWR boards, go ahead and hide them, but it does look like most of the users of this site disagree with you.

AuntBeastie · 03/10/2018 07:39

I worry about this too. Hiding the topic has been much better for my emotional wellbeing but the more people who do this means the fewer challenging the views on the threads, so the echo chamber effect worsens. It’s a worry.

I’ve pretty much given up trying to fight the battle on MN though - it’s so disproportionately anti-trans compared to other sites and the real world, so there’s a very limited impact you can make.

GerdaLovesLili · 03/10/2018 08:16

it does look like most of the users of this site disagree with you.

What? Even if every single one of the potential 1000 posts were an endorsement of GC FWR then it would still be a tiny proportion of the total individual users here. Instead the thread has become yet another "Spartacus" thread.

It would be fascinating to know how many people do have the topic hidden.

Elephantinacravat · 03/10/2018 08:25

That is true. But then again the traffic on FWR has apparently also gone up hugely in the last few months, I guess different people can make of that what they want.

CatsCatsCats11 · 03/10/2018 08:42

Yes thank you, bye bye feminism transphobia

Perfectly1mperfect · 03/10/2018 08:43

What I make of that is mumsnet are not moderating posts as well as other internet sites and are letting anti trans threads stay. This is unfortunately attracting a certain type of poster as they can get away with posting stuff which I don't think they would on other sites.

PickAChew · 03/10/2018 08:46

For those of you using a mobile browser, if you scroll to the bottom, you can temporarily switch to the desktop site if there's any function you need that's not on the mobile site.

I'm late to the thread but @AuntBeastie you've said it perfectly! I very much regard myself as a feminist but the feminist board on MN is really little more than self-righteous transphobia.

Elephantinacravat · 03/10/2018 09:10

Or maybe its because Mumsnet allows women to discuss how the redefinition of the sexes and the redefinition of 'woman' to include men could have an impact on women and feminism, whereas in other places you will get 'bigot' screamed at you if you dare to say men can't be women. Discussion is not 'literal violence' no matter what certain people say.

And if you want to see actual transphobia, there are plenty of places online where you can see it, Twitter and Facebook comment sections for one. It's mostly blokes coming out with it though, and we all know that men don't have to be 'kind' and 'accomodating' so they just say what they like and no one cares.

WorraLiberty · 03/10/2018 09:13

Yes but to be fair, they're answering the question about why they use Mumsnet.

If the question was something like 'What's your least favourite Mumsnet topic?', the answers could be very different.

AuntBeastie · 03/10/2018 09:17

Twitter is a much bigger sphere than MN so yes, the transphobia can seem correspondingly huge, but in terms of proportion MN is definitely worse. And I have had much more success getting transphobic posts removed from twitter than I have from MN. Twitter and Facebook both delete content that is far less horrendous than some of the posts MN lets stand in the name of ‘debate’. And that goes for racism as well as transphobia, based on my experience.

sansouci · 03/10/2018 09:30

I once voiced an opinion on an MN feminism thread and the venom directed at me made me cry! I've been on MN for 15 years so have developed what I thought was a thick skin but no, apparently not. My DD calls them "feminazis"Confused

SummerGems · 03/10/2018 10:09

It would be fascinating to know how many people do have the topic hidden. oh it would. Except I suspect that if you started a thread in site staff asking the question (and I have considered it) the transphobes would infiltrate it before too long and talk about how people were trying to shut down debate about “the biggest issue to face women ever in the history of womanhood” yada yada yada.

Still tempted to start the thread asking though.

Samcro · 03/10/2018 10:14

i have feminism hidden for ages. I hate all the anti men stuff that comes out on trans threads. I do wish mn hq would either move or put something in the title of any thread in AIBU that is about trans. I hate opening a thread an then realising that its another one.
((awaits slating.....))

stressedwoman · 03/10/2018 10:17

I agree! I'm a feminist so irritated I need to block that thread but all the transphobic stuff is incessant!

WorraLiberty · 03/10/2018 10:19

SummerGems I'm not sure that would be much of an indication of how popular/unpopular a topic is.

Many people don't know how to hide a topic, or that it's even possible (as this thread shows) and I suspect the majority will just scroll past in Active if they don't like a certain topic.

Too many 'topics' there ^^ but I can't be bothered to re-word it Blush

peachgreen · 03/10/2018 10:24

It's a shame because there are so many other topics worthy of discussion (as mentioned by PPs) but I'd never venture anywhere near the FWR board because the transphobia is so horrendous. Annoyingly there are loads of legitimate and interesting discussion points around self-ID and I would really like to discuss my own concerns (whilst still believing that trans-women are women). But you can't go into one of those threads without encountering the same tired, bigoted rhetoric and so the moderate voices are entirely lost. It's the same with that "what do you use Mumsnet for" thread - I drafted a post but then saw it had been overrun with GC feminists and just couldn't be bothered engaging any more. It's exhausting and pointless.

DioneTheDiabolist · 03/10/2018 10:53

Sorry you've been so unwell Lem. Glad you got sorted with hiding FWR, hope you feel better soon.Flowers

FunSponges · 03/10/2018 11:04

I didn't know you could hide topics. Just got rid of 70 pointless topics. Thanks to who did that link!
