To ask why fish don't count?

Biancadelriosback · 01/10/2018 19:44

Okay, so I'm watching the island on catch up and I genuinely don't understand something. One of the guys is not happy that the rest of the group want to kill the pig for food. He says he is dead set against taking a life if it can be avoided...yet he is actively fishing, casting nets and eating fish.
I just don't understand and I've always been curious, why don't fish count? Do pescatarian's eat crab and squid etc as well as fish? Genuine genuine question, I just can't get my head around it

Because they haven't got an abacus?

OvO · 01/10/2018 19:47

Oh god, April, that properly made me laugh!

Molokonono · 01/10/2018 19:48

He is a fucking twat.

He has only been 'pescatarian' for 5 months.

He is the worst type of virtue signalling twat.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 01/10/2018 19:48

I came on to say that actually they can count up to 3 but no higher. But obviously that isn't what the OP meant!

FlapAttack23 · 01/10/2018 19:49

They only have fins.. no fingers to count on

Biancadelriosback · 01/10/2018 19:50

😂😂

PattiStanger · 01/10/2018 19:51

What do you mean Flapatack, you haven't heard of fish fingers? Grin

Gammeldragz · 01/10/2018 19:51

I've never understood this, I have several vegetarian friends who eat fish. I don't understand why fish aren't animals? I have more respect for vegans, at least they stick to solid principles even if it means never eating cheese.

SaucyJack · 01/10/2018 19:51

Because they’re not cute.

Glumglowworm · 01/10/2018 19:51

I’ve been thinking the same thing

If you are so strongly against killing a living creature for food then how can you justify killing fish?

ohfourfoxache · 01/10/2018 19:52

I had just popped in to say that it’s because by the time they get to 2 they’ve forgotten what they’re doing...

willowpillow · 01/10/2018 19:53

What's worse is that he then accidentally killed the pig anyway but they were still not allowed to eat it and had to give it a proper funeral.
Sorry rant over, he is a twat but I also want to know the answer to your question.

Ohluckyme · 01/10/2018 19:54

I think it’s more about how brutal it is. Killing a pig is a horrible business - I couldn’t do it, but I could catch a fish.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 01/10/2018 19:54

I've never understood it either. Fish don't even get a quick death, they suffocate on the deck of a boat. Not to mention all the bycatch that dies and just gets thrown back.

Veterinari · 01/10/2018 19:55

Because people are uninformed or wilfully ignorant.

And if you eat fish you aren’t a vegetarian, you’re a pescetarian

Aprilislonggone · 01/10/2018 19:55

Barry the fish has fingers.

CoffeeShortbread · 01/10/2018 19:56

I don’t know, but not all vegetarians or pescatarians are eating that way for ‘ethical’ reasons. Quite a few just don’t like the taste or mouth feel of meat.

RedneckStumpy · 01/10/2018 19:56

There is no difference. A life is a life.

In the wild you do what you need to do to survive,

XiCi · 01/10/2018 19:57

This has always been a bugbear of mine. I've met many so many people who state they are vegetarian and then you find out that they eat fish. Why would fish be different to any other living animal? The last person I questioned just said 'well you have to draw the line somewhere'. Don't understand the mentality of it.

Tahani · 01/10/2018 19:58

a relative said "its because fish dont feel pain" - i was Hmm

Ohluckyme · 01/10/2018 19:58

People can eat what they like. No need to be judgemental.

Biancadelriosback · 01/10/2018 20:00

@coffeeshortbread oh yeah I know that. One of my colleagues is a vegetarian purely because she doesn't like the taste or texture of meat.

I have no issue with dietary choices, it's just something I don't understand re fish and meat.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 01/10/2018 20:00

The while episode really infuriated me! Why did the others agree to not eat the pig! Utterly bizarre.

TheCatFromOuterSpace · 01/10/2018 20:02

For me it's because they aren't (usually) farmed. I can live with killing an animal for food, it's much worse in my opinion to keep them in cruel conditions for their whole lives. If I was going to give something up on ethical grounds, it would be dairy and not fish.

Glumglowworm · 01/10/2018 20:03

If people just don’t like meat then that’s their choice. If they just choose to eat fish that’s fine.

That’s not this guy though! He is very vocal about it being an ethical choice, and he is influencing others on the island (in supposedly a survival situation) to follow suit. They killed the pig accidentally and still didn’t eat it!
