To ask why fish don't count?

Okay, so I'm watching the island on catch up and I genuinely don't understand something. One of the guys is not happy that the rest of the group want to kill the pig for food. He says he is dead set against taking a life if it can be avoided...yet he is actively fishing, casting nets and eating fish.
I just don't understand and I've always been curious, why don't fish count? Do pescatarian's eat crab and squid etc as well as fish? Genuine genuine question, I just can't get my head around it

@OhLuckyMe who's being judgemental? I'm asking to be educated on something I don't understand.

We all draw a line somewhere between what we consider to be ethical and unethical food. You could argue that pescatarians are hypocritical for eating fish but not meat, but you could make that same argument for vegetarians who eat dairy but not meat, or vegans who shop in stores that promote meat, or meat eaters that are opposed to fur, etc.

We're all hypocrites really, so it's probably best to just try to be as ethical as we can and not judge others for being somewhere else on the spectrum of food ethics

Dyrne · 01/10/2018 20:05

Agree with the cuteness factor.

Same reason people get all het up about saving pandas but don’t care about Cod

MereDintofPandiculation · 01/10/2018 20:06

There is no difference. A life is a life. That applies to spiders too.

I suppose what people are saying is that they won't kill sentient life (a carrot is alive, even to the point you drop it into the pan of boiling water) and different people have different points where they believe sentient life begins.

ohfourfoxache · 01/10/2018 20:06

But even fishing is cruel - even if they are thrown back alive. I can’t understand why people think it’s “sport”

PhilomenaButterfly · 01/10/2018 20:08

To quote Nirvana: It's okay to eat fish coz they don't have any feelings.

I think some people do feel like that. It's bollocks of course.

Biancadelriosback · 01/10/2018 20:08

I understand we all have to draw the line somewhere, but in this particular survival situation, he is kicking off, making a huge song and dance about how cruel others are for wanting to eat the pig. Last week he was cheering and rubbing their faces in it when their hunt was unsuccessful, then swaggered off to pull the fish from the net, stick them in a bucket without water so they are gasping for breath and guts them.

@Biancadelriosback well it's reality tv so of course his behaviour is going to be OTT

Luvly12 · 01/10/2018 20:11

Vegetarians do NOT eat fish!!!!!!

Anyone saying they are vegetarian but eats fish isn't a vegetarian, they are pescatarian.

Vegetarians do NOT eat anything that was alive

donquixotedelamancha · 01/10/2018 20:14

@Luvly12 Vegetarians do NOT eat anything that was alive

So.....just rocks then?

Redinthefacegirl · 01/10/2018 20:17

"It's okay to eat fish because they don't have any feelings"

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Im pescatarian, I was vegetarian from.age 10 to 22 buy started eating fish again when I went traveling. I see your point but also see mammals as different. I could ask many meat eaters why they wouldn't want to eat dog, it may be illogical but it's still legitimate..

Nowadays I don't eat meat for mainly farming/ environmental reasons. A meat heavy diet for all just isn't sustainable. I toy with the idea of occasional locally sourced etc meat or veganism (but I love cheese). I get that my current stance is imperfect or hypocrtical but right now it's right for me.

I hope I've never been preachy though.

Luvly12 · 01/10/2018 20:19

donquixotedelamancha ... that's original!!!
Ok ... they don't eat anything that had a face Grin

Menolly · 01/10/2018 20:21

Its coz we eat their fingers so they have nothing to count on.

I reckon its because animals walk on land and breathe air like we do, and tend to be cute, have noticeable personalities and/or facial expressions etc but fish don't so don't evoke as much emotion.

Hoppinggreen · 01/10/2018 20:21

This is why I hate fishing as a sport
DH likes fishing but he would be horrified at the thought of pulling a rabbit around by a hook in its mouth.
Fish DO feel pain and even if they get thrown back it must be pretty traumatic

susurration · 01/10/2018 20:25

hang on, how did he accidentally kill the pig?

Juells · 01/10/2018 20:26

Because they’re not cute.

That isn't it. I eat fish because I reckon they get hoovered up by other fish in huge quantities, and would get eaten shortly anyway. I know it's all dodgy excuses, but to me it isn't the same as breeding animals just so you can kill them and eat them. I think of fish as not having the same brain types as pigs or sheep or cows. It's all very well to say "I have more respect for vegans" but what are you doing? People are very sanctimonious about other's efforts to reduce the amount of meat they eat.

Biancadelriosback · 01/10/2018 20:28

Thank you Red for explaining from your POV. Interesting argument re cats and dogs but very well put. I do believe in a survival situation I would although wouldn't be a decision I would take lightly.

olderthanyouthink · 01/10/2018 20:31

Some of you should be ashamed of yourselves, terrible jokes!

If it's about not farming then wild (Like the pig) animals should be fine, right?

Killing a chicken can be as quick as killing a fish, just chop its head off.

How about insects? A veggie told me it was ok to kill ticks on their pets because they couldn't feel pain but objected to my kill bugs in the house (you know like flies that can land on your food and make you sick)

Biancadelriosback · 01/10/2018 20:31

@susurration one of the camp is Muslim and was upset at sharing the camp with the pig and all the talks of killing and eating it, so the moron I was talking about in my OP tied the pig up at the other side of the beach, left it overnight (I think?) And it strangled itself.
He then won't let them eat it so they float it out to sea

Biancadelriosback · 01/10/2018 20:33

@julles thanks for answering too. And for your honesty.

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 01/10/2018 20:38

Probably a good thing I did not watch this as I probably would have kicked the tv.

mangowango · 01/10/2018 20:40

I can't believe they didn't eat the pig!!

BearFoxBear · 01/10/2018 20:42

I'm pescatarian. I don't eat meat because I don't agree with a lot of farming practice and for environmental reasons. I do eat (wild) fish though because I have a family, a very full on job, and a weight lifting husband who needs lots of protein and I just don't have the time to be making multiple meals every day.

I recognise the hypocrisy in that but its the best I can do just now. Some days I just can't stomach fish and eat entirely vegan/vegetarian if I can get away with it. It just depends.

mindutopia · 01/10/2018 20:43

Vegetarians who eat fish aren't vegetarians. I do have a few wacko friends who claim to be, but eat fish (of course, they also eat burgers too when they get drunk, so...). I was a vegetarian for 20 years. I never ate fish. But some people just like being picky and weird and precious about their food choices and they like the attention it brings them. That said, I do know some people who are genuine pescatarians and it's largely to do with health reasons (avoiding red meat) and not really for humane reasons.

MartagonLilies · 01/10/2018 20:43

I don't watch the programme, so haven't seen any of this.
I just really have to know - how the fuck do you kill accidentally kill a pig? Confused
