To ask why fish don't count?

Biancadelriosback · 01/10/2018 19:44

Okay, so I'm watching the island on catch up and I genuinely don't understand something. One of the guys is not happy that the rest of the group want to kill the pig for food. He says he is dead set against taking a life if it can be avoided...yet he is actively fishing, casting nets and eating fish.
I just don't understand and I've always been curious, why don't fish count? Do pescatarian's eat crab and squid etc as well as fish? Genuine genuine question, I just can't get my head around it

People can eat whatever they like from frois gras to a lentil only diet, but call yourself a vegetarian in front of me when you eat fish and I may well call you an idiot.

MartagonLilies · 01/10/2018 20:45

Ah, have just seen Bianca's post. Thanks for clearing that up - makes perfect sense now Grin

Juells · 01/10/2018 20:45

Killing a chicken can be as quick as killing a fish, just chop its head off.

Chickens are pretty intelligent :(

Biancadelriosback · 01/10/2018 20:46

@BearFox thanks for answering! And being honest. I hope this doesn't sound patronising, it's hard to convey tone in text and I tend to over-explain my points, but I appreciate you saying that it's the best you can do and that does make sense!

@MartagonLilies - he led the pig to the other side of the island as one of the people is a Muslin and upset about sharing her space with the pig and all the talk of it. They were also concerned about hygiene as the pig was weeing and pooing in the camp. The pig was tied to a tree and strangled itself.

Chesterfieldsofa · 01/10/2018 20:53

By being a fucking idiot. You could hear that it was in distress (or the distress sounds were edited in), then you saw it dead with a ridiculous rope around its neck. Either it was tied with a slip knot that tightened as it pulled back, or (and?) it was tied in an unsuitable place allowing it to wrap the rope around trees and debris.

Not the first time that animals have been killed by clueless stupidity. Should be thoroughly ashamed of himself.

BearFoxBear · 01/10/2018 20:55

@Biancadelriosback Not patronising at all! Smile

TatianaLarina · 01/10/2018 21:03

If this were Lord of the Flies he’d have a pig shin in his skull by the end of the week.

knittingdad · 01/10/2018 21:26

Well most meat-eaters wouldn't ever consider eating other humans. Pigs and cattle are mammals so they are more closely related to us than fish.

Chickens and ducks are birds and therefore are less closely related to us than other mammals, but more closely related than fish.

You could make an argument on affinity from closeness of relation. There is also a Christian background to this. Traditionally fish were permitted to be eaten during Lent when the eating of meat was forbidden.

I'm sure this still had a residual cultural impact even though these rules are now rarely followed explicitly.

LemonysSnicket · 01/10/2018 23:09

I imagine their lack of sentience in comparison to a pig.

I wouldn't want them to kill the pig as it's so horrifying , all the blood and gutting. I'm not bothered about killing fish probably because their blood isn't red like a mammals...

Jamiefraserskilt · 01/10/2018 23:12

By the end of this week, they will be so hangry they will be digging it up again. This is a survival show. You eat what you can, when you can. If for whatever reason you decide not to eat something picked, poached or fished, that is up to you, don't guilt others into following your decision. Makes me cross when people do this. You can eat everything except the squeak. The bones make useful tools. But hey ho, nothing like watching a bunch of sheep....

Star81 · 01/10/2018 23:12

Beat bit was when they floated it out to sea and martin Kemp said he hoped it wouldn’t come back in the morning 🤣

The pescatarian guy is just annoying though. Only been doing it 5 months and is dictating to others what they should do

Coco2891 · 01/10/2018 23:24

I'm not vegetarian or pescatarian but work in the fishing industry and feel incredibly guilty about Lobsters 😕 and massive crabs coz they're about 20+ years old -they made it that far and are then caught and served up in a swanky London restaurant ☹️

Coco2891 · 01/10/2018 23:25

Oh Sebastian 😔 (I think that's what it may stem from somewhere in my subconscious)

MelonBuffet · 01/10/2018 23:27

I had a dinner party once - one of th guests told me “don’t forget xx is a vegetarian”. I protested that I’d been to her house the week before and she’d made chicken. “Oh yes, she eats chicken, but otherwise she’s a veggie” Confused

Can’t believe they agreed not to eat it when they’re all wasting away. What a waste.

FaithHopeAndSkulduggery · 01/10/2018 23:41

About the ‘fish don’t feel pain’ bollocks - they used to say that about newborn babies too and operated on them without anaesthetic Confused .

SneakyGremlins · 01/10/2018 23:47

Fish seems easier to kill. Just behead it.

also Bianca is coming to Wembley Arena next year

eachtigertires · 02/10/2018 00:02

Not all people who don’t eat meat do so for ethical reasons. I am a pescetarian but will tell people I am a vegetarian as it tends to invite less questions and if they serve me veggie food rather than fish I couldn’t care less.

KurriKurri · 02/10/2018 00:07

I don't understand it either. I'm a vegetarian, I don't eat meat or fish. But I have come across the weird attitude that a fish is somehow not really an animal before.
I remember a thread on here ages ago about someone treating a pet goldfish badly and people thought it was somehow funny, when I posted that it was cruel and disgusting I was told it was only a fish and I was over reacting.
Makes no sense to me, but even less sense for someone who thinks eating meat is cruel to think that eating and killing fish is OK. At least meat eaters are consistent in their approach to food.

dapplegrey · 02/10/2018 00:13

Fish farming is vile - do animal rights activists ever turn their attention to it?

Rebecca36 · 02/10/2018 00:59

Nobody taught them to count at fish school.

knittingdad · 02/10/2018 01:50

@dapplegrey - does George Monbiot count? Though in this piece he's criticising an animal welfare charity for turning a blind eye to bad practice in fish farming.

dapplegrey · 02/10/2018 09:17

Knitting - thank you for that.
It's all really grim.

MsHopey · 02/10/2018 09:37

I totally get if people want to lessen their meat eating in any way they can. Totally 100% the individuals choice.

But I cannot believe a perfect healthy animal died over night because someone was essentially a fucking idiot, and then they just threw it away.
It seems such a waste of life. And if they floated it out to see when it starts to decompose it won't be very pleasant for the other animals at sea?
I don't really know but I can't imagine siding with not eating it. Not sure how one person can bully the entire camp that much if he's the one that bloody killed the pig!

Lightsong · 02/10/2018 09:46

I do eat fish and don't eat meat but I don''t call myself a vegetarian, I say that I don't eat meat.

I don't have any ethical reasons, the idea of eating flesh just creeps me out (makes me think of human flesh) but fish doesn't look like flesh so I'm OK with it.
