To encourage Ocado shoppers to read this

If you are an Ocado customer, you should be aware that they consider defining ‘woman’ as an adult human female to be hate speech and not ‘in line with their values’.

They threatened to pull advertising from Primesite unless Primesite took down a billboard with the OED definition of woman on it.

They have received hundreds of complaints from women since, but have refused to apologise.

Just in case you might want to consider not giving your money to a company who consider the word woman to not be in line with their values.

And if you do decide to boycott, tell them why.

I think it will blow over in the sense that new customers will consider all supermarkets and many who haven't heard of this will consider Ocado.

However there are at least 100 of us who have stated on mumsnet that we have cancelled our Ocado order - and probably many more lurkers - so they lost maybe £500 to £1m worth of annual business. Some customers here were saying they spent £250 a week. I was spending about £100 and more at Christmas. And I just discussed the subject with my cleaner who will probably discuss it with all her customers because women talk!

"At Ocado we believe passionately in a culture of inclusion and creating an environment around our business that is completely free from discrimination, harassment and victimisation of any sort.”

This was in my cut and paste apology. I have responded to this hypocrisy.

TheBananaStand2 · 02/10/2018 09:49

Love Ocado! Have you tried their raw gherkins? Delicious!

JamAtkins · 02/10/2018 09:50

I don’t live in what you might call ‘Waitrose territory’ but I had my first delivery this morning and the driver said there was another in my street right after mine. He commented that he had never been to my estate before.

I think it will blow over in the sense that people forget and move on but I, like many, originally used Ocado because the offered a better service than the other supermarkets. I switched to them from Sainsburys years ago because at the time Sainsburys only offered 2 hour slots, there was no ‘delivery pass’ system and there was a lot of short date and substituted times. I think the other supermarkets have raised their game and at the same time, Ocado have lowered theirs. Once you start looking into it and realise you are better off with someone else then agreeing or disagreeing with Ocado’s MRA/TRA stance is irrelevant.

The best thing about this affair is the notice to other businesses that women are not to be ignored or sidelined.
We will not tolerate it!

Beesandfrogsandfleas · 02/10/2018 10:06

Guest on Jeremy vine has just mentioned the great customer service of Ocado - she needs to read this thread!

FekkoTheLawyer · 02/10/2018 10:40

Maybe 'she' has? I've seen a small handful of 'ooooooo ocado is fabulous!' by at least one face/name who is known (natacha dooda).

Estellesylvia · 02/10/2018 11:20

Ocado should know that I and other posters will be here to provide regular reminders to Mumsnetters of how Ocado view their main customer base.

Is there a hash tag?

FekkoTheLawyer · 02/10/2018 12:16

Lots of new reviewers piling in with 5star ratings (and the odd 'anti t**g rant).

Oh ocado, I dont like your army very much.

LaPufalina · 02/10/2018 12:36

Bet they don't spend as much as us, Fekko!
Or what we used to spend, anyway Grin

FekkoTheLawyer · 02/10/2018 12:39

Does ocado sell wigs?

FekkoTheLawyer · 02/10/2018 12:43

And it's really not fair if someone were to use their male and female alter egos to write 2 reviews. Unkwaa they order 2 lots of grocery shopping.

ShovingLeopard · 02/10/2018 12:54

I can't imagine Dr Harrop would be spending the £££ per week a 40 something wife and mother does.

FekkoTheLawyer · 02/10/2018 14:23

Maybe a lecturer with 2 hats might. I suppose they have demamded 2 salaries as they both work - sometimes even collaborating.

FekkoTheLawyer · 02/10/2018 14:29

Just seen this on Twitter. Don't know if it's true. Maybe a brummie can pop down and take some photos before the swooners start tantrumming.

There's a "Woman. Adult Human Female" electric billboard gone up outside Birmingham New St Station.

ShovingLeopard · 02/10/2018 15:00

Sorry, I see you're on it

FekkoTheLawyer · 02/10/2018 15:11

I'm spreading the love...

agennaro · 04/10/2018 18:11

Had a sorry not sorry email, so reluctantly cancelled. Will miss them but on the bright side I may save money!

Xenia · 04/10/2018 18:19

Radio 4 news at 5pm (PM) had a good item about trans issues today and the fact some people think Stonewall is not encouraging free debate. One man interviewed was allowed to make most of the sensible points lots of us think and he rightly said too many people are being bullied, doxed etc just for expressing views. He hopes the BBC will allow more discussion on the issue. I think the tide has slightly turned particularly as The Times which I read seems to have got behind freedom of speech on this issue.

Troels · 04/10/2018 18:28

Ha Ha I love that billboard.
I don't shop Ocado but won't even consider them in the future.

FekkoTheLawyer · 04/10/2018 18:36

Xenia - that's our Johnny! He's around here somewhere.

ohamIreally · 12/10/2018 23:54

I've been an Ocado shopper for many years and it's made my life a whole lot easier but I've cancelled my account and told them why.
I can't expect to say and not do.
