Macron's behaviour is despicable

I am a moderate remainer, I say that because I do feel we should respect the vote. I am not a remainer who think a second ref will help. A second ref won't help regardless of the outcome, because the other side will simply demand another one, and another and so it would go on indefinitely and it is utterly futile and pointless.

I had come to the conclusion that a good deal would be the best outcome in the end. However I am just appalled at the behaviour and language coming out of the EU, and particularly Macron.

I am now even thinking what is the point? What is the point in continuing with any 'deal'? They are clearly not remotely interested.

May (for all her faults, and she has many) should gather her dignity and call it a day. We were there in good faith, the chequers plan is not perfect but it was a starting point. I had hoped it would work. It would have offered a solution of sorts.

I have cancelled our holiday next year to France. I don't want to go anywhere so openly hostile, despite the fact we have been holidaying there for my entire living life. I can't support Macron's comments that were both needlessly humiliating and rude to our prime minister.

Thoughts?

Havanananana Nothing wrong with a bit of self promotion!!! :) :)

I am often incredibly underwhelmed by TM to be fair, so she surprised me. I was waiting for a weak resignation but no she has come out fighting in the lovely velvet!!!! Life in the old dog yet clearly (no offence intended)

She needs to stand aside, she is acting in haste and allowing the EU to dictate the terms and tone of the negotiations.

As usual all about the her, the tory party and the DUP.

Snowymountainsalways · 21/09/2018 14:22

AuldAlliance I am getting the impression you don't like her.

May is really not known for her speeches, they are often wooden and uncomfortable.

You do realise that she doesn't write them?

1tisILeClerc · 21/09/2018 14:22

I presume the delay in broadcast is because they couldn't get hold of the Polish electrician.

IdahoJones · 21/09/2018 14:23

I am relieved she hasn't resigned and offered the job to Boris

Please tell me you don't really think that's how Conservative party politics works.

She’s holding a gun to the nations head. The UK has no leverage. Bloody fool.

Snowymountainsalways · 21/09/2018 14:24

IdahoJones Jeez I was joking!! This is a lighthearted thread, we have decided not to do any bashing

So, after two years there is no plan from the UK, we demand that the EU comes up with one itself and if it can't or won't we're going to blow up our own economy?

And that's a great speech? That is leadership?

scottishdiem · 21/09/2018 14:26

The EU is not acting in bad faith at all. The UK has red lines it won't cross. This is fair. But why should the EU also not have red lines either. The options have been there since the start. See slide. The idea of a Canada or South Korea deal has been there since the start. But Brexiters know this is a worse deal than we have just now. But why should the EU change it's rules to match what the UK wants.

Ignorant fuckwits that can't see it's ok for both sides to have rules and policy positions are the ones acting in bad faith. We don't want the EU so we don't get the EU. We have European courts, the common market, freedom of movement and independent trade. We have been offered, since the start, a deal that offers this. The same as Canada and South Korea have but this vexing ignorant British exceptionalism thinks we deserve more. But no-one can say why or even acknowledge it.

Sorry not RTFT in entirety as so long. Has anybody seen the Instagram Donald Tusk posted mocking Teresa May

Link here: www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/uk-politics-45599122

It’s a picture of him handing Theresa May a cake saying ‘A piece of cake perhaps...sorry, no cherries’.

When this sort of aggression, belligerence and nasty ill judged social media posts come from Trump in America a lot of people seem to sit and tut tut and say how awful unstatesmanlike and undignified it is. But the same people seem to be cheering along the EU doing exactly the same thing. It’s weird.

Snowymountainsalways · 21/09/2018 14:26

HPFA Would you want her job? Be my guest. I am not sure you are going to have much competition on your hands. Its all yours.

1tisILeClerc That is probably the problem, the Polish electricians can’t find the fault and had to get a good U.K. electrician to put his work right

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 21/09/2018 14:27

This ^.

The speech was not great. It was never going to be.

Mookatron · 21/09/2018 14:27

I'm embarrassed by her suggestion it's the EU's turn for a suggestion and I'm livid that she's standing against requests for a second referendum.

I literally don't understand why we are doing this.

Havanananana · 21/09/2018 14:28

you gave us no reason for your objections

She obviously misplaced the memo - or in her usual style, ignored anything that she didn't like the look of. Just to clarify, the EU has always stated;

  • No country that is no longer a member can have the same, or better, terms with the EU than they had prior to leaving.
  • No country can enjoy better trading terms with the EU than members themselves enjoy.
  • The EU cannot enter any agreement that undermines the principles of the four freedoms

Until May gets this into her head, she is still chasing unicorns.

Geraldine170 · 21/09/2018 14:28

WE are the ones that desperately need a deal to work, not the EU.

I think they’re going to struggle if we walk away with our £39bn. The Germans are not going to enjoy having to pay for another EU screw up again if they end up having to make up the shortfall again...

goodbyestranger · 21/09/2018 14:30

That's incredibly weak Hesta.

Hayles88 · 21/09/2018 14:30

I am relieved she hasn't resigned and offered the job to Boris to be fair, so anything would better than that!

You really don't know anything about politics do you?

Satsumaeater · 21/09/2018 14:30

I'm embarrassed by her suggestion it's the EU's turn for a suggestion and I'm livid that she's standing against requests for a second referendum

Exactly.

And why is EEA a mockery of the referendum result? It was very close, and it would be a compromise that would avoid the worst of the economic damage.

IdahoJones · 21/09/2018 14:30

I know the SPADs will be out and about reading stuff like this, so how do you like these apples -

Me, Remain then, Remain now
DP, moved from Leave to Remain
DS and DD, both Remain and Remain
DSS, Leave changed to Remain
DSD, didn't vote but doesn't trust May a jot

And everyone in our loose clan thinks Macron was right about Brexit liars, actually.

Loving the Polish electrician line LeClerc Grin

linkylink · 21/09/2018 14:31

It will be interesting to see if the EU came back with something or ignore TM, I personally don't think either side truly wants a no deal.

Hesta54 · 21/09/2018 14:31

Wether people are asking for things that are not agreeable, you can still treat people with respect, that seems to be missing on the EU side

jasjas1973 · 21/09/2018 14:32

@Geraldine170

Apparently Downing St are taking that as a bit of fun and light relief, it is the Macron speech that has riled her and that she was pretty much ignored in salzburg.
I'm not sure a meeting to discuss the EU's problems with immigration was a great place to have a 10 min speech on her plans, most of europe don't care about brexit, it isn't something that is in their news like it is here.
