Pansexual? AIBU to not understand how this isn't different to Bi?

I really don't understand this new phenomena and I feel completely ignorant.
In my day (80's - 90's), if not having a sexual preference you termed yourself bisexual. Not that anybody has to classify themselves at all.

But recently I hear more of pan-sexual. What on earth does it mean? The only explanation I've heard is that they choose the mind over biology. Isn't that what everyone does?

@starzig
Actually I am a bit pissed off at your post. You’re saying that bi people like men and women at the same time?
And you don’t. So if you’re single and you’re in woman mode, you wouldn’t ever like a man?
Because if you’re inferring bi people are cheaters and go with men and women at the same time then I think you’re not a very nice person and you hold as much prejudice as mrs muggins at number 58 that thinks all gays are promiscuous

DiegoMad0nna · 14/09/2018 00:01

I thought starzig meant that if she's walking down the street and sees a hot guy, she's straight, then if five seconds later she sees a hot woman, she's a lesbian. Always switching back and forth, but never ever bi.

starzig · 14/09/2018 00:02

That's not what I meant at all lowtide and well you know it. Because you like more than one type of person does not mean you are permanently sleeping with both.

starzig · 14/09/2018 00:04

And lowtide I'm afraid if you are confused, there is not much else I can do to help you.

slashlover · 14/09/2018 00:05

You'd be amazed (or possibly not) at the number of people on tumblr who claim to be asexual but who also claim to have, and enjoy, an active sex life.

Asexual people can enjoy sex, asexuality means a lack of sexual attraction not the inability to have sex.

Also goat, you can't post stuff about your horse and expect to be taken seriously as sexuality is about who you're sexually attracted to.

GoatWoman · 14/09/2018 00:08

Fuck me. I'm not understanding it any better. Everyone knows what bi means, even my daughter did about 10 years ago. Anoyone who pretends otherwise is a colossal attention seeker.

Can't you just put on some black eye liner and wear some velvet/ army attire. Delete as appropriate.

I still don't know what the fuck pan is? Should I even have to know?

I work in the public sector and these things are usually very important.

OP posts:
GoatWoman · 14/09/2018 00:13

Hey, I never said anything about sex and my horse. I just said I loved him immensely. And much more than my then husband.

Don't read weird stuff into what I've written. How am I supposed to know what pan is? I thought it could cover that. I can't be alone in deeply loving a pet, whom is so special that he seems/is so much more than that?

Pansexuality, or omnisexuality, is the sexual, romantic or emotional attraction towards people regardless of their sex or gender identity. Pansexual people may refer to themselves as gender-blind, asserting that gender and sex are not determining factors in their romantic or sexual attraction to others.

Not having a type?

slashlover · 14/09/2018 00:14

People have already explained it -

Bi - Attracted to males and females
Pan - Attracted to males, females, trans people, non-binary, genderfluid etc.

slashlover · 14/09/2018 00:16

I love my cat to bits. I am in no way sexually attracted to my cat therefore my cat has nothing to do with discussion about sexuality.

SD1978 · 14/09/2018 00:20

thepbhscloset.weebly.com/a-list-of-genders--sexualities-and-their-definitions.html

Here's a list. Sexuality and gender are seperate, with about 70 different sexualities and genders available. Allegedly.

Frequency · 14/09/2018 00:20

But the thing is, Slashlover, trans people and non binary-people are male or female. Bi-sexual covers them.

The term is pansexual. There are only two sexes. Male and female.

lowtide · 14/09/2018 00:20

@DiegoMad0nna
But that’s bi
You think that bi people don’t behave in the same way

JoanFrenulum · 14/09/2018 00:24

Pansexual; the proper spelling is really "pantsexual." It's a term for people who would bang anything that moves, but that's illegal, so it's limited to "would bang anything that buys its own pants," that plausibly limits the banging to sentient adult humans. That's a "pantsexual," but the t is elided because Linguistics, like how we don't pronounce the t in "acts."

slashlover · 14/09/2018 00:31

But the thing is, Slashlover, trans people and non binary-people are male or female. Bi-sexual covers them.

The term is pansexual. There are only two sexes. Male and female.*

However once you start mixing gender identity into it then it becomes a lot more difficult. A bisexual woman may not be attracted to a transgender person (MtF or FtM) pansexual is just a way of including non-CIS genders.

lowtide · 14/09/2018 00:34

So you’re blanket saying bi people are transphobic

slashlover · 14/09/2018 00:37

WTF? You're not transphobic because you're not attracted to someone. I'm asexual, what would that make me?

Yambabe · 14/09/2018 00:43

See that's what confuses me Slashlover.

Cos if pansexual means attracted to male, female, trans and non-binary then surely pansexuals don't believe transwomen-are-women or transmen-are-men. Which might make them cool and edgy but also makes them transphobic, right?

More knotting of language and not actually thinking about the contradictions because they are too busy being woke and inclusive whilst at the same time denying trans people their very existence.

Sheesh. Must be so hard finding a partner these days with all that cognitive dissonance going on!

Yambabe · 14/09/2018 00:45

Xpost with lowtide, oops!

Oh and according to some of the twittersphere you are indeed transphobic if you're not attracted to someone. Especially if you're a lesbian - do you not know about the cotton ceiling?

BlackForestCake · 14/09/2018 00:55

Bisexual means you are attracted to both men and women.

Now that extra sexes have been invented we now need pansexual too to accomodate attraction to those.

PlatypusPie · 14/09/2018 00:58

Pan’s People were a jolly attractive set of girls - I thought we obsessively discussed their latest hair styles, as featured on Top of the Pops, every week in our 6th form common room because of our keen interest in fashion. Seems I may have been wrong about that.......

buttfacedmiscreant · 14/09/2018 00:58

There aren't just two biological sexes...

X – Roughly 1 in 2,000 to 1 in 5,000 people (Turner’s )
XX – Most common form of female
XXY – Roughly 1 in 500 to 1 in 1,000 people (Klinefelter)
XY – Most common form of male
XYY – Roughly 1 out of 1,000 people
XXXY – Roughly 1 in 18,000 to 1 in 50,000 births

slashlover · 14/09/2018 01:03

Pansexual is attraction regardless of gender so the other person can identify as whatever they like, regardless of what body parts they have.

You can believe trans-men are men and not be attracted to them.

Oh and according to some of the twittersphere you are indeed transphobic if you're not attracted to someone

You can find anything on twitter.

Wiki says the cotton ceiling is the 'difficulty trans people experience when seeking lesbian and gay relationships, and in lesbian and gay social spaces more generally.'

Yambabe · 14/09/2018 01:03

What extra sexes have been invented Blackforest?

Genuine question, not being goady.

You can apparently be all kinds of gender but despite all the frantic hoping for a sex "spectrum" and the rather distatsteful use of intersex to try and prove it (even though it doesn't) I'm not aware of any more than 2, are you? What are the other sexes called?

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 14/09/2018 01:04

I’m on a forum relating to Only Connect. There was a pansexual contestant on there a few years ago. Someone asked what a pansexual was. One reply was, “I dunno. But if it comes near me I’ll hit it with a pan”
