... to ask how much money you had saved by age 30?

Just that really. Turned 30 last month and feeling a bit crap about the amount of money I have in savings (around £3k). Is this normal? I only started properly saving recently (when I had a sudden "I'm 30 soon and I have no savings!" panic). I'd had a big saved before but dipped into it regularly for treats! I don't know why this has suddenly struck me - I think because I'm no longer "in my 20s" I feel like I should suddenly act like a proper grown up! Curious to sort of gage my situation (as well as hoping for reassurance - or worst case scenario to find out I'm dramatically behind most people which will hopefully give me some motivation!) Thank you! Flowers

3k savings if you have a mortgage is good.

If you don’t own a house, I think 3k savings is very poor.

Hideandgo · 13/09/2018 17:24

You really can’t compare. The fact that you’re not in debt puts you well ahead of a lot of people.

If you want more savings you need to renegotiate salary or change job, and/or cut your spending. Earning more is actually a lot more effective that cutting spending but people are often very reluctant to make job moves.

Medea13 · 13/09/2018 17:25

I had £18k; would have had more but went back to uni at 25 to do a PhD and, while my funding was enough to live on it didn't leave any spare for savings. Had i carried on in my job for those 5 years i'd probably have had another £20k saved. All from working, no inheritance. No kids.

Stopandlook · 13/09/2018 17:26

Had an overdraft at 30..... still do!

Charm23 · 13/09/2018 17:26

Remember everyone is different so there is no specific savings amount that you should have. 3k is more than a lot will have so don't feel bad!

actualpuffins · 13/09/2018 17:27

None. I bought a house at 26, got married at 28 and just about paid off my student loan and credit card before having DD1 at 29. Have never had much in the way of savings since either.

Sparklesocks · 13/09/2018 17:28

I'm 30 and I have £7k in a help to buy ISA.
My DP has similar.

elQuintoConyo · 13/09/2018 17:28

Zilch.

I was working in a well-paid job in Barcelona and going out A LOT Grin fucking marvellous time!

Courtney555 · 13/09/2018 17:29

36 here. Savings fluctuate around £10k. I am shite with money.

nokidshere · 13/09/2018 17:30

I had no savings when I was 30, or before I was 30, or indeed after I was 30!

Before having children I was told I would never have any, so we just spent everything and had a ball Grin after I had children (age 39) I didn't have enough income to save anything, now I'm late 50's and all my money goes on supporting 2 boys through uni.

So, as far as I am concerned your £3k is lots Smile

Justabouthadituptohere · 13/09/2018 17:30

I didn’t have a house was about to buy I think about £85k in savings. I worked in sales and was bloody good at it lol

BarbarianMum · 13/09/2018 17:32

8k. Which I then used as a deposit/legal fees to buy my first flat. Then had c £1k for next couple of years.

cookiesandchocolate · 13/09/2018 17:33

My savings are from inheritance 25k. Prior to that when I was 21, I had 3k saved and then had a family. So most of our money goes into spending and we don't really save, we just try not to dip into the savings

BlackEyedOwls · 13/09/2018 17:33

I'm 27 and have £19k in savings and £5k tied up in an investment that went bad and I might never see again. I loaned £3k to my dad which I suspect I'll never see either.

It sounds like a lot of money but it's nothing really - not enough for a deposit for anything worth having, just one bed flats or cramped and over-priced help to buys.

I have 3 savings pots on the go - one for a deposit, one for my annual rail ticket and one for holidays. Having them separated out physically helps to stay on budget and not burn through what's there.

My goal is to have £35k by the time I'm 30.

PasstheStarmix · 13/09/2018 17:34

I had thousands but then bought a house and it all went on the deposit the I saved afew thousand again and it all went after having a baby...kids so expensive and now back to square one!!! Sad

PasstheStarmix · 13/09/2018 17:34

MrsCar · 13/09/2018 17:37

Very little (around 3k actually, for kids education ) but had a mortgage and a owned a car
(Most of my family/friends had car loans or hire purchase etc)

SoyDora · 13/09/2018 17:38

About £30k but it was for a house deposit. Now we’ve bought the house it’s nowhere near that!

Bestseller · 13/09/2018 17:39

A year's salary. I know it makes me sound complete joyless but it was always my ambition to know we'd be OK for at least a year whatever happened. I achieved it before thirty and have maintained it as my scary has increased.

I bought my first house at 23 (practically derelict and not particularly nice area) and paid off the mortgage by overpaying by the time I was 32. Then bought another house but always had that year on savings.

I'm sure it makes me sound miserable but security has always been more important to me than clothes/holidays/cars.

Bestseller · 13/09/2018 17:40

Scary salary Grin

DanSullivan · 13/09/2018 17:41

I’m 33 and I’ve got £303.11 in savings.

Xenia · 13/09/2018 17:43

At 30 we had 3 children, a house, both working full time, paying 2 sets of school fees and childcare for the youngest and 2 flats we let out (although they didn't make a profit or loss and were dropping in value).
Not a huge amount saved as the mortgage alone was half our net salaries.

FoodGloriousFud · 13/09/2018 17:45

32, 10k savings, had mortgage for 5 years, getting married next year so have separate savings for that.

Rebecca36 · 13/09/2018 17:46

I had £300 at thirty and it was soon gone! Husband was the same.
After that I had nothing for many years. If I saved it was for something specific. Things got better later on, as they do, and I was able to put some money in an interest earning account which is still there.

I can't say I ever thought much about saving, or about money come to that, except the lack of it.

blueyacht · 13/09/2018 17:47

I went to London on the dole and left seven years later aged 30 with the best part of quarter of a million in savings. I earned it by doing a job I hated, I also bought and sold a flat there. Spent the lot on a flat that I love back in my home town.
