... to ask how much money you had saved by age 30?

Izzygrey · 13/09/2018 17:21

Just that really. Turned 30 last month and feeling a bit crap about the amount of money I have in savings (around £3k). Is this normal? I only started properly saving recently (when I had a sudden "I'm 30 soon and I have no savings!" panic). I'd had a big saved before but dipped into it regularly for treats! I don't know why this has suddenly struck me - I think because I'm no longer "in my 20s" I feel like I should suddenly act like a proper grown up! Curious to sort of gage my situation (as well as hoping for reassurance - or worst case scenario to find out I'm dramatically behind most people which will hopefully give me some motivation!) Thank you! Flowers

I had £25000 in savings and would've had more but went back to do my Phd and funds were massively limited until I'd finished. Don't be disheartened though, £3000 is a start. Keep saving and watch that amount grow.

Camomila · 13/09/2018 17:47

£200 :(
DH has £2500 so that's a bit better!

Still renting too! But we've just moved out of London so cheaper rent and more chilcare help.

(DH and I have set ourselves the target of getting a mortgage by 35. Will be hard I think!)

DerekTheBrave · 13/09/2018 17:48

£0.

Just mortgages and too many bills.

We have several options to ‘free up’ money if needed...but no actual savings.

DinoGreen · 13/09/2018 17:48

I’m 31 and only have about £2.5k. We do have a lot of equity in our house though. Most of it went in there and then intended to build the savings pot back up but had DS, savings diminished even further whilst on mat leave and now we pay out £1200 a month on childcare so not a lot left to save ...

BobbleHat102 · 13/09/2018 17:48

It all depends on where you are at in life. On my 30th birthday I'd cleared my student loan, and just blown 20k savings on a house deposit, so zero! Built them up again to 10k and now back to zero due to expensive house repairs and the impending arrival of my first child!

Mitzimaybe · 13/09/2018 17:50

At 30 every spare penny went on my mortgage so I didn't have any savings, or no more than a small "rainy day" fund in case of emergency. Mortgage interest was a lot higher than savings interest so it made sense to put spare cash towards paying off the mortgage earlier.

PenguinBollard · 13/09/2018 17:50

On track to have £150k plus mortgage free by 30 between DP and I.
Neither inherited but both boring driven to save as much as poss by that age.

DPs is from hard saving since about 18, mine is from targeting a high paid career.

BergamotMouse · 13/09/2018 17:51

About 4K in savings. But have just moved house. We have about 300k in equity in the house. Both me and DH have done very well from inheritance but also live an extremely frugal and boring life.

Hoping to add £6-700 to savings from now on.

I was always told have at least 3 months salary saved.

Namechangingagainjustbecause · 13/09/2018 17:52

I’m in my 40’s and have only managed to save 2k so far and live in rented accommodation. I’m truly fucked

ProcrastinatingPingu · 13/09/2018 17:52

We’ve just bought a house, so bugger all! Before that about 24k.
We invest in shares and intend to start saving again, we’re in our late 20s and I don’t expect we’ll have much at all by the time we reach 30.
I still need to get a wriggle in saving for retirement though.

Wormzy · 13/09/2018 17:52

30 was the age I finally cut myself some slack. I'd had a decent bit saved before then, but have since come across so many people who either died before being able to enjoy their savings or - having never saved - enjoyed a much better life than me.

I now have separate savings account for occasional spending money (clothes, holidays, birthdays etc.), car savings (bills and building up for a new car) and a rainy day fund. They all have different puposes.

Holidayshopping · 13/09/2018 17:53

It depends if you own your own house/have a mortgage or not?

StormcloakNord · 13/09/2018 17:56

I'm 25, DP is 30. We've got £1.5k just now but our money is tied up in the house mostly, not that much left for saving!

We have about 80k equity in the house tho. Bought for 234k and it'll likely sell for about 10k more by the time we sell so we're ok.. could be better tho.

MyNameIsArthur · 13/09/2018 18:01

No savings at 30 as ex DP always kept us in debt

FaFoutis · 13/09/2018 18:02

None. I had an overdraft of £3,000.

whyohwhydoibother · 13/09/2018 18:04

at 30 and single, had 14k in savings, and walked away to another country to help save a house deposit (for London). Unfortunately never came back! Now 34, 150k in savings, and 3 investment properties worth 1.5 million.

However, full student loan to pay back once I started working at 24. Relatively high paying job in the UK (and much more financially appreciated overseas), but if you come from a self-supporting background, takes a while to get yourself established (plus I like nice handbags!)

feelingdizzy · 13/09/2018 18:08

None, had been married and divorced with 2 kids by 30.Fourteen years later still 0,don't really think about it.I don't have extra money so can't save,so no point worrying about it .

MadamePeony · 13/09/2018 18:08

I am 28 with a mortgage, dog and baby on the way. I currently have 20K in savings 19K in an ISA and 1K in easy access. DP has a few thousand in his accounts. We will consolidate next year once we are married.
Big thing for us is a cheap wedding. Town hall, 10 guests and pub after! Keeps my savings nice and high 😀

MrsStrowman · 13/09/2018 18:10

At 30 around £40k but that plus equity from my flat were for a house deposit, legal costs etc, so that's all now in the property and spent some plus DHs savings on renovation. I've currently got around £10k in an ISA plus we've got about £5k in our rainy day emergency fund, but we paid for our wedding at the start of the year, which would've been another £17k. I think DH has around £5k in his savings account. I was hoping to get to to around a year's salary in savings by this time next year, but now I'll be going on mat leave so that won't happen as I'm the higher earner! At the moment I'm able to save about £1000 a month and DH around £400-£500 , but some of it is going straight back out on baby stuff, furniture, and we've just been on holiday. Neither of us have had any inheritance etc, when we were saving for our house and in lower paid roles than we are now we both took second jobs to save extra

PinguDance · 13/09/2018 18:12

I’m nearly 30 and I have -2000 pounds on overdraft but a house. I know loads of people who have neither house nor savings. I’m actually quite good with money so the overdraft is free and ‘planned’. If you’ve saved 3k in a year or so that’s pretty good - I find it easy to save once it’s a habit and once you have enough to benefit form interest rates.

Skarossinkplungerridesagain · 13/09/2018 18:15

Christ I find these threads depressing. I had no savings at 30, I did have student debt though. I just have other debt now.

prettypossums · 13/09/2018 18:16

I had virtually no savings at 30, perhaps £2-3K max... all my spare income in my 20's went on travel, clothes and going out.

I am now mid-40's and have considerable savings - only started at around 32... It's never too late!

FabulousTomatoes · 13/09/2018 18:18

When I was thirty some thirteen years ago we moved to our current doer-upper house. We had about 250k in house equity but zilch in savings. All our savings go into an offset mortgage acct, so I don’t count it as savings, more depletion of mortgage. As we had to borrow money to do up the house, the mortgage grew but we’ve since managed to just about get it below what it was when we moved here!

sandrainbloom · 13/09/2018 18:19

I had nothing as took on a mortgage at 26 and had a 40k deposit

Frosty66611 · 13/09/2018 18:19

I’m 30 and have about 10k in savings. I’ve got no debts at all but I don’t have a mortgage yet which sucks
