... to ask how much money you had saved by age 30?

Izzygrey · 13/09/2018 17:21

Just that really. Turned 30 last month and feeling a bit crap about the amount of money I have in savings (around £3k). Is this normal? I only started properly saving recently (when I had a sudden "I'm 30 soon and I have no savings!" panic). I'd had a big saved before but dipped into it regularly for treats! I don't know why this has suddenly struck me - I think because I'm no longer "in my 20s" I feel like I should suddenly act like a proper grown up! Curious to sort of gage my situation (as well as hoping for reassurance - or worst case scenario to find out I'm dramatically behind most people which will hopefully give me some motivation!) Thank you! Flowers

26k.
Husband had similar
Then we bought a house.
I dont have money for myself anymore. But my 22 week old does and boy is she rich!
I find that i save better for a specific goal rather than 'just because'. Now im saving for her future its slowly piling up again.

FabulousTomatoes · 13/09/2018 18:19

I should add that we’ve had to spend about 70k + on the house - we’re not as shit with money as my post might imply Grin

SilverbytheSea · 13/09/2018 18:20

Had just over 8k at 27 until last week when we put the deposit down and paid the legal fees to our first house. Now we have a little left over for carpets and then it’ll be pretty much zilch 😛

Ellen7262 · 13/09/2018 18:20

I'm 25 and have about 20k in savings. Quite privileged in the sense that my parents bought my house for me, though. I think it just depends on your circumstances. If 3k suits your circumstances, then it's a good amount saved! Don't beat yourself up over savings.

RedSuitcase · 13/09/2018 18:22

😂 "quite" privileged

WelcomeToShootingStars · 13/09/2018 18:22

About £60k, give or take a bit. Mortgage was just about paid off and we were saving incase we decided to move.

Ellen7262 · 13/09/2018 18:25

@RedSuitcase well, very privileged!! I'm aware I'm in a good position

Rednaxela · 13/09/2018 18:25

Approx -6k.(debt)

On a national average it is highly abnormal to have anything saved at all.

Something like 2 of 3 families are living paycheck to paycheck.

FlopsVoice · 13/09/2018 18:26

I've a mortgage and on track to have £30k saved by my thirtieth

vanillapieandicecream · 13/09/2018 18:27

I had 28k, and that funded us leaving the country and setting up abroad. I am now about to turn 40 and have no savings or a mortgage but I have established a new life and (self employed) career abroad and hopefully (If Brexit doesn't fuck everything up) then it will have been worth the gamble...

theycallmebabydriver · 13/09/2018 18:29

At 30 I was earning about 40k had no savings, a huge over draft and a decent amount of credit card debt, all from pissing money up the wall and was young free and single.

At 36 I am now married, have a newborn, a mortgage on a house I own, no other debt and 25k ish in savings (I now earn almost double what I did 6 years ago) I spent that last 6 years being sensible, saving and paying off my debt (I bought the house before I met DH).

I don't regret it for a second, it's not everyone's cup of tea but I had a really good time for years with nothing to show for it. I've always made the maximum pension contributions though- free money from your employer!

Fullofthought · 13/09/2018 18:34

I've had to use all mine to make a new life after my marriage. Broke down. I'm 30 next week and currently have £100 in my account. Don't own a house but am grateful that I am away from the toxic man and that me and my little girl are save and that we have each other. I do however have life insurance and no debt at all. No overdraft no credit cards. If I don't have the money I don't buy anything.

Ellen7262 · 13/09/2018 18:37

@Fullofthought Cheers to that Wine

Sandstormbrewing · 13/09/2018 18:38

Well, we'd bought a house at 26 and then I went back to uni and we renovated the house so I think we had saved and spent around 20k, not including the deposit for the house. We then got married, which was 8k saved then spent. We're now 35 and have bought a second house and have around 120k equity in that but only about 3k net savings.

SilverySurfer · 13/09/2018 18:39

Zero. The interest rate on my mortgage hit 15% about then and I was on my knees financially. I had a full time job and also worked evenings and weekends to enable me to pay the mortgage.

Greyhorses · 13/09/2018 18:41

None however we do enjoy ourselves and have lots of hobbies, trips, pets and a mortgage.
In an emergency we could access a reasonable amount.

Don’t feel guilty...life’s too short.

SuperMumTum · 13/09/2018 18:41

I have a lowish mortgage, no debt and about 6k in savings. I don't feel the need to have a lot of savings - if I have spare money it goes on the house or holidays.

whereiscaroline · 13/09/2018 18:44

I just don't get HOW people have this much in savings by age 30?! Like, how did you have the money spare to save what must have been huge monthly sums?

MummySharkDoodoododoo · 13/09/2018 18:49

I don't have a penny to my name and I'm 31.

Life is for living and enjoying, not stressing that you haven't saved enough. Obviously savings are great if you can but if you haven't got it you haven't got it!

Handbaghag · 13/09/2018 18:49

Had had our first child and bought a house so had no savings. Now 46, 2 teens, a more expensive house and still no savings.

Bestseller · 13/09/2018 18:51

From the day I started work at 16 I set up a standing order saving 10% of everything I earned, which seemed to normal to me. In ten years you've saved a year's salary

Ellen7262 · 13/09/2018 18:52

@whereiscaroline to be honest I've always just saved up any spare cash I had. Am a relatively high earner (accountant) and my outgoings just aren't that high! I think it does just depend on the position you're in, and whether you have the money spare to save or not!

Sparklesocks · 13/09/2018 18:54

whereiscaroline some people must be high earners but I wonder if some might be inheritance or flipping property

whereiscaroline · 13/09/2018 18:56

@Ellen7262 I can understand you having savings, as obviously you won't have had to pay rent/mortgage if your parents bought your house for you, but there's lots of people on here who I'm guessing weren't in that position and still have a lot of savings. It sounds like you have a sensible financial head too though so kudos to you.

I am always really impressed by people who can be motivated to save big chunks of money just for savings sake rather than saving for something. The whole concept is alien to me. Upbringing must be a big part of this mentality?

Seniorschoolmum · 13/09/2018 18:58

I didn’t have any actual money & I didn’t own a car, but I had a house which was worth about £85,000 and a mortgage of about £60,000.

But that was a long time ago. And the house had no central heating, no real kitchen and needed a new sitting room floor. It took me about 7 years to do up.
