... to ask how much money you had saved by age 30?

Izzygrey · 13/09/2018 17:21

Just that really. Turned 30 last month and feeling a bit crap about the amount of money I have in savings (around £3k). Is this normal? I only started properly saving recently (when I had a sudden "I'm 30 soon and I have no savings!" panic). I'd had a big saved before but dipped into it regularly for treats! I don't know why this has suddenly struck me - I think because I'm no longer "in my 20s" I feel like I should suddenly act like a proper grown up! Curious to sort of gage my situation (as well as hoping for reassurance - or worst case scenario to find out I'm dramatically behind most people which will hopefully give me some motivation!) Thank you! Flowers

I inherited a house which I started renting out when I was 21. The income from that all just went to savings.

thewheelers · 13/09/2018 21:19

I'm 28 and only have about £2k. Although I just bought a house with 15% deposit which wiped out savings of around 25k. It's all relative. If you're trying to save some and you have enough for an emergency I think you're doing okay.

Jane1727 · 13/09/2018 21:23

I am nearly 40 and still just have debt!

nonnatushouse · 13/09/2018 21:23

Fucking hell! I’m 25, with a DD, work 50 hour weeks and barely have a penny to scratch my arse with at the end of the month.

The money OH makes goes straight back into his business.

Should’ve concentrated more at school . . . .

EmilyRosiEl · 13/09/2018 21:25

I'm 30, I have debt because I had to get into debt to provide my parents with money to eat and pay their bills and I'm on a low income.

Soo £minus something in savings!

EnglishRose13 · 13/09/2018 21:36
  1. About £20k and own a house.
Bluelady · 13/09/2018 21:39

At 30 I was a single parent and a student. I hadn't got enough to live on so the idea of savings was a joke.

Causeimunderyourspell · 13/09/2018 21:40

I'm 30 next year and am I'm about £20k debt with no mortgage. You're doing ok trust me Grin

Zigazagazoo · 13/09/2018 21:41

Dh had about 30k saved at 23. 27k was spent on house deposit. Now at 30 he has about 30k again. All saved, no inheritance etc.
Myself on the other hand (I’m 30) about £500.
We are married though so it’s all together.

BumDisease · 13/09/2018 21:43

I wouldn't worry op. On MN everybody has 3 houses and £9 zillion pounds savings before they leave school!

Wittow · 13/09/2018 21:46

A friend of mine is an A&E consultant, married to a vet and they have a stocks and shares portfolio of £210k. I was green with envy when I heard this. Blush

Rebecca36 · 13/09/2018 21:46

Not everyone BumDisease!
I dunno why the op is pissed off at only have £3k in savings. That's a small fortune at 30 for many.

Agree with the poster who said life is for living, not saving. However it's a good idea to make some provision for old age in order to maintain independence. Most people will inherit something along the way which enhances life.

Trottersindependenttraders · 13/09/2018 21:46

Umm, no savings at all by 30. We had a house, a doo-er, upp-er that used all of our spare cash. We had DD when we were 30 and the finanical crisis hit and the house was worth less than we paid / spent on it.

Not ideal but do you know what, here we are almost 40 and the world didn't gave in. We still don't have mega savings but we do okay, we're paying into pensions and we've not got loads of loans / credit cards etc.

shapeshifter88 · 13/09/2018 21:48

at 30 i had maybe 2000 in a savings account and around 20k in the house deposit

chaoscategorised · 13/09/2018 21:49

I'm late 20s and don't have any savings - I know, to the hour, when my next payday is! I am paid around the national average but have debt from when I was younger which is very, very slowly getting paid off. Agreed with a PP about saving for its own sake and saving for something - I've been on holiday etc a few times in the last five years and saved up for those, but it just never really occurred to me/seemed like a normal thing to do to just... get rid of some of your salary, not to be used. And I imagine a large part of that was growing up where savings weren't a thing and looking down the back of the sofa for coppers to put electric on the meter were. I have a really poor relationship with money and as soon as I was earning, I felt like a millionaire and treated myself to all the things I wanted - then it became a habit and now I'm nearly 30 and have no savings at all, so I'm starting from scratch!

PamsterWheel · 13/09/2018 21:49

Nada. I still had student loan debt til my early 30s.

I didn't have any savings (bar the odd couple of hundred quid here and there) til I was in my 40s.

Ohyesiam · 13/09/2018 21:53

Zero.
It’s was all good. Babies aren’t expemsiv if you don’t have to do childcare.

SparklyLeprechaun · 13/09/2018 21:54

Not a penny. We still had a mortgage at 30 and everything we earned was going towards overpaying it. Interest rates were high. Once we got rid of the mortgage and stopped paying nursery fees, saving became easy.

Quangot · 13/09/2018 21:57

None.

PasstheStarmix · 13/09/2018 22:03

babysharksmummy · 13/09/2018 22:08

Minus ten grand

BarnabyBungle · 13/09/2018 22:13

On track to have £150k plus mortgage free by 30 between DP and I. Neither inherited but both boring driven to save as much as poss by that age. DPs is from hard saving since about 18, mine is from targeting a high paid career.

That’s almost unbelievably impressive esp as no inheritance - even most careful people have barely even got a mortgage at that age!..... but really, I’m not sure what the point is of saving so hard, so young, and being quite so ascetic when in the prime of your life?! Do you think you’ll ease up now you’re in a better financial position than most retirees?

theSnuffster · 13/09/2018 22:14

I'm 30. We don't own our house. I have about 6k saved. It has been more but we used some towards buying a car when our old one died. We've recently booked our first holiday abroad so that 6k will go down a little. We only have a small amount of debt.

flirtygirl · 13/09/2018 22:18

I save no matter how much I have. All going into my new house at the moment and I'll be mortgage free (as moving to a cheaper area). Not easy when you experienced financial abuse and are a carer to a disabled child.

I've had no inheritance and spent years on benefits, I've have also worked 4 jobs at some points.
But my mindset is to save no matter what you have, 50p or £50, it will all grow.

I love being frugal and I don't deny myself or my kids that much. I just shop around for the best price and best quality.

At 30 I had around 3k in savings also, as I had spent out on a wedding and visa and lots of travel in the previous 2 years. My savings had come from working till I became ill at 27 and having a low mortgage as I bought so young. Marriage wrecked my savings but I still always saved and had a running away fund etc.

OhTheRoses · 13/09/2018 22:25

I had about £4k at 21 from various temp jobs and a £1200 boost from my mum. My dad gave me double my savings for having savings and to help me buy a flat. Which I did. A doer upper. By 26 I had £60k equity and bought a house - doer upper. By 30 equity was about £80k, savings about 12k. This was SW London more than 30 years ago.
