... to ask how much money you had saved by age 30?

Just that really. Turned 30 last month and feeling a bit crap about the amount of money I have in savings (around £3k). Is this normal? I only started properly saving recently (when I had a sudden "I'm 30 soon and I have no savings!" panic). I'd had a big saved before but dipped into it regularly for treats! I don't know why this has suddenly struck me - I think because I'm no longer "in my 20s" I feel like I should suddenly act like a proper grown up! Curious to sort of gage my situation (as well as hoping for reassurance - or worst case scenario to find out I'm dramatically behind most people which will hopefully give me some motivation!) Thank you! Flowers

I'm almost 30 and partner is 36, 1 child together and I have 3 step children. renting our house so no mortgage and zero in savings. both work although I am on maternity leave but neither if us has any qualifications to get what people consider to be a 'well paid job. but we get by and are happy Smile I'd rather go on holiday or treat the kids if we have spare money

SoleBizzz · 14/09/2018 16:10

£273,000,000 inherited.

BlackEyedOwls · 14/09/2018 16:17

SoleBizzz who did you inherit two hundred and seventy three million pounds from?? Shock

SoleBizzz · 14/09/2018 16:25

plumcat · 14/09/2018 16:51

Zero. I put it down to my mental health problems as I've jumped from one job to another and never had financial security .

theendofeverything · 14/09/2018 16:55

Zero savings, an overdraft and in negative equity. It sounds bad but it didn't bother me that much!

Now 20 -odd years later mortgage paid off and have around 40K in savings. It does get easier!

theendofeverything · 14/09/2018 16:57

SoleBizzz I take it you employ someone to post on internet forums for you? Grin

DH and I both approaching 30- we've got around £55k saved but no mortgage yet so that'll wipe a big chunk off that as we'll be pretty limited on locations where we can buy.

Most of this saving has been down to him- I've had fairly poor mental health throughout my twenties and work has been chaotic and he's a relatively high earner. We've had holidays and enjoy a good standard of living but neither of us are particularly materialistic and don't hanker after designer clothes/fancy cars etc so I think that has helped us save. Probably £10k of it has been in gifts over the years and the rest we have saved ourselves.

twinkledag · 14/09/2018 23:03

Me and OH had around £20k saved to buy a house.

9 years later we are £20k in debt due to 2 failed IVF cycles Sad

Saracen · 15/09/2018 00:44

At 30 I had about £1500 saved toward a house deposit. It was incredibly hard to save anything while paying high rent.

From the moment we bought a house, our fortunes turned around instantly. The mortgage payments were far lower than our rent had been, plus we took a lodger, and so we were able to overpay very significantly on the mortgage. We paid it off quickly, and then we had no rent or mortgage to pay and so there was money to shovel into savings.

While paying the mortgage we had no savings to speak of, maybe £700. But we didn't need savings because the mortage was one which would allow us to draw down some of our previous overpayments whenever we wanted - so that was the emergency fund.

Money begets money. It's profoundly unfair. What our lodger paid us in rent during the years he was with us added up to nearly half the cost of our house. If we hadn't managed to get onto the property ladder, we'd have made no progress at all on saving, as our money would still be going to a landlord.

SweatyFretty · 15/09/2018 00:53

26 here. I've been post-uni working for 4 years. I've got 28k. I'm aware this is fairly unusual - I do get paid well but I am also notably good with money and fairly frugal.

TheSmallAssassin · 15/09/2018 00:57

I was several thousands of pounds in debt at 30. Nearly 20 years later, I have paid off all the debt, but still have hardly any savings (I only save towards Christmas and holidays). My husband is much better at saving. Mortgage is due to be paid off in the next few years though (fingers crossed), in-laws gave us a chunk of money after a windfall and we are overpaying.

lightonthewater · 15/09/2018 01:03

None at all.

AnnabelleLecter · 15/09/2018 01:15

Can't remember exactly, maybe £5k. Not much in cash as we spent a lot on holidays, clothes,, cars etc at that time (no dc yet)
We had almost paid off first house/mortgage and were about to move up the ladder to a bigger house. Also put lots away in pensions.

TinkysWinky · 15/09/2018 10:02

Im 33, had saved up about 10k at 26 between DH and I but then got married so most of that went, then saved up again 12k by 28 again between us and all of that went on house deposit /fees etc (we are lucky that house prices in area we live are much less than elsewhere in country so good 5 bed house and no plans to move) and 2x mat leaves, i was then part time and now freelance, we have about 5k in savings plus now about 50k equity in the house. My aim is 12k as self employed would keep us for 6 months in event of emergency or 12 months if one of us lost the job. We are also 6 months 'ahead' of the mortgage in overpayments so could stop paying for 6 months if needed without penalty. i would still much rather have more but this is what happens when you make life choices!

had about 10k and a mortgage. The money was saved in readiness to have children and fund mat leave. Had 2 children but circumstances changed and never went back to my career or full time work. Relocated to reduce mortgage and with oh working and me doing pt job did ok.
Have a decent amount now and no mortgage but the monies came from my husbands life insurance payout. I would rather have my husband back.

duchessofsussedsex · 15/09/2018 10:19

I'm 30. I bought a flat 18m ago with a £35k deposit and paid £9k stamp duty. I then bought a car on finance with a £1500 deposit. I now have £20k in the bank.

I earned every single penny of this Myself - no help and no inheritance. It can be done.

Benjaminbuttonschild · 15/09/2018 10:33

At 30 I had about £3k worth of savings. But I bought a house a 29 and had ds2 two weeks after moving in Shock

Now I have about £5k of savings. Not a great deal but it's hard to save with childcare costs, after school clubs. I'm an overpaying the mortgage by £250 per month as well. Hoping to be mortgage free by 50. I'm 32 now btw.

GertrudetheFifth · 15/09/2018 10:34

I think the amount saved will vary hugely depending on life choices. Some people have been working more than 10 years at 30. Some have houses and families.

I chose a career with a very long training period. When I turned 30 I had no savings or pension and a £17k student loan. Fortunately once I finally got a proper job, the pay is very good. I am now 34 and have cleared my student loan, and have been saving like crazy for house deposit, paying into private pension etc. Have saved just under £100k now. But getting financially stable was a huge priority for me, so I have lived fairly frugally and developed a love for camping during this time. Wink

Baby soon starts daycare, so my ability to save will decrease dramatically...

Pebblespony · 15/09/2018 10:39

Not a red cent! Living very much hand to mouth as a mature student. It was great!

Llanali · 15/09/2018 16:38

I’m 30 now, single income household, one DC. Have a 59% ltv mortgage, so money there and about 15k in standard savings.

Husband is stay at home dad and has no savings of his own, so the above is family savings.

I earn reasonable money, but we also have a full life of animals and horses- expensive hobby!

None. My ex used to spend money like it was going out of fashion. The central heating didn't work, but we had hundreds of pounds worth of very pretty books.

crazycatlady5 · 15/09/2018 17:21

It really depends on how much you have early to be honest. Before I was 30 I earnt just enogjh to get by (rent, bills, food) with a little bit left over so I never really managed to save much.
