I got this from an antique shop and I love it but my DH is not too sure and I want to know if it is just me that likes it. It is nearly 80 years old.

I really like it, both shape and fabric, but I couldn’t be doing with a second hand sofa. God only knows what could have seeped into it over 80 years.

Bobbybear10 · 07/09/2018 19:52

I like it but agree that it looks horrible in the room.

If you decorate to compliment the sofa and then put a picture back on MN of the updated room I reckon most people would change their minds.

It all depends how good you are at room design.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 07/09/2018 19:52

I wish I could see the suite in the room it was originally bought for, to see what other furniture/rugs/fireplace were there, and how they styled it.

Pity it's not a time machine sofa!

lovetherisingsun · 07/09/2018 19:58

It hurts my eyes.

AfterSchoolWorry · 07/09/2018 19:59

It's bad! Is it velour gold and burgundy? 😷

AnnieAnoniMoose · 07/09/2018 20:10

Your husband is an exceedingly kind man. Appreciate him. It would not cross my threshold! Not for love nor money.

...but I’m glad it’s found a home where it’s loved..

SecretWitch · 07/09/2018 20:18

Hi all, sorry for the thread hijack, op. Yes, we have a mourning room. Our house was built in 1887. People did, indeed, lay their dead out in this room. We use it as a second living room. We did remove the sconces ( for now) as my 11 yr old dd finds them scary. As a matter of fact, she avoids the room entirely...

The op’s furniture would go very nicely in that room to complete the creepy vibe.

wafflyversatile · 07/09/2018 20:26

It would have to be in the right room. That isnt the right room. It looks like your gran foisted it on you when she got a new one.

crazydoglady6867 · 07/09/2018 20:32

Oh secretwitch. I would love to live in your house, I dream of having an old house but my OH will draw the line at that I’m afraid! So I am slowly making my brand new build into something inside that resembles an 1887 property it will just take time working on my DH. I am now jealous and want my own mourning roomGrin

Way too busy for me.
But my mind is chaotic , so I need everything very Scandi pared back on the outside.

sanssherif · 07/09/2018 20:34

How much did you pay for it?

crazydoglady6867 · 07/09/2018 20:36

£275

I like the shake of the sofa, but not that of the chair. I don’t like the fabric, but think it would be gorgeous in a deep jewel coloured velvet.

steff13 · 07/09/2018 20:37

I don't hate it, but it looks very worn on the corners, and it doesn't belong in the room that it's in.

RosiesYellowDress · 07/09/2018 20:38

I’m having an asthma attack just thinking of amount of dust that has accumulated.

Reminds me of carpet we had growing up, admit it lasted longer than anything know to man but it was ugly as sin.

I currently sitting on an ugly sofa

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 07/09/2018 20:38

Lovely shape OP, but that pattern is overpowering, I agree with everyone who says it needs recovering, sorry!

You can still have the period vibe - I’d have the sofa patterned and the chairs plain with cushions that match the sofa. I think it has real potential though, and I bet it’s really solid and well made.

RockinHippy · 07/09/2018 20:40

Sorry OP, I'm with your DP, it's grim Blush

OliveBranchManager · 07/09/2018 20:41

I love it, in an otherwise minimal and tasteful room.

I love that it doesn't look like a page out of the next catalogue. Ykwim.

fussychica · 07/09/2018 20:41

Sorry but as I opened the photo I said out loud "omg thats vile"Shocksounds like I'm not alone in that view.Grin

tethersend · 07/09/2018 20:45

I love it.

But this my suite, so I may be making it worse Grin

tethersend I kinda like that!

You like if OP and that’s the main thing. Surely you didn’t go and buy it without your DH input? That would be soo wrong (unless you have a lounge each in your home).
Personally I think it looks really uncomfortable to sit on. Also it jars against your spanking new modern home, clashes with your carpet and doesn’t go with the ikea style cabinet. I have a modern house with old furniture and it looks rubbish too. But who cares l!? Life is too short!

SecretWitch · 07/09/2018 20:51

@crazydoglady6867, I love my home! Like I said it’s a heap though..think horsehair plaster, ancient plumbing, expensive roof repairs because of the many different roof levels and cost of heating 12 feet ceilings..

My family is voting for new build in our next house.

Keep your furniture. If you love it and brings you joy, that’s all that matters.

cantfindamoniker · 07/09/2018 20:51

Well I think it's marvellous! I agree a thorough clean is essential. Don't introduce any other pattern into the room. A large ornate mirror or light fitting would be great. You're right about not being able to do the grey/ neutral meh thing with this beauty. I'd get a good paint chart and see what colour would harmonise with it. Or if you can colour match it to a F and B paint you.can then look up the colour on the FB site and see what paint colours they suggest.

Bugjune · 07/09/2018 20:55

Looks like my Granny's carpet c.1984.
