NC as potentially outing.

£45 pair of trainers look like this after 6weeks of wear, manufacturer says its 'wear and tear'. My son is 3.5 years, size 11.5 shoes.

AIBU in thinking this isn't normal wear and tear?

Pics are of ours and a google image of the nearest equivalent!

Buy some blue shoemagic and they'll look like new. They're just scuffed.

pollymere · 06/09/2018 17:47

Actually, it could be leather peel looking more closely. Totally a fault, the leather is like paper due to a defect so will come off at the slightest knock. If that's the case, take them back to the shop. At six weeks though, you might find he has outgrown them so you've officially had full wear from them. A good shop will replace anyway, or offer a discount on a new pair.

@shoess

I have an older dyspraxic son so we try to get shoes without laces. So far we've managed to get shoes up to a size 5. Sports Direct has been a great source of trainers and walking shoes (which look like trainers to me but are actually cut down walking boots) with elastic laces. H&M also sell loads of shoes with with elastic laces or velcro. These are obviously not as good quality as geox but they are very cheap and if he's going to scuff them and grow out of them in a few months they are a good option.

GoodbyeBlueMonday · 06/09/2018 17:56

It's the scooter. I've been there. Even once or twice a week, unless they are made of asbestos, he will kill the toes. Try and encourage him to use the proper break and but shoes from George in the meantime!

TulipsInBloom1 · 06/09/2018 18:02

We got 3yo ds a pair of nike velcro trainers from the bloody awful Sports Direct. They still look brand new after about 4 months of hard wear. Come up nice in the washing machine too.

jellycat · 06/09/2018 18:18

I used to avoid shoes with rubber toes if possible because I did find they wore out very quickly. If leather gets scuffed it looks tatty but it can at least be polished up whereas the rubber seemed to get torn very easily, and there was only lining material underneath so then they were no longer waterproof at all.

It can be hard to find shoes with leather at the toes though. Most of our trainers came from Clark's because I found them the hardest wearing.

Icanttakemuchmore · 06/09/2018 18:31

We bought gd Geox trainers and they were brilliant. Now has 2nd pair as she grew out of them but they're still like new . She doesn't wear them whilst on her little scooter or balance bike much though. It actually says on a big notice in the shoe shop that they are not responsible for excessive wear if worn whilst on things such as bikes scooters etc that would cause excessive wear.

Nearly47 · 06/09/2018 18:32

My son will destroy any shoes with 3 months. Now I only buy cheaper shoes. There is no point spending loads. Never Spend more than 40 pounds. It's not the shoes fault. I am told I was the sameGrin

RomanyRoots · 06/09/2018 18:44

mine went through shoes constantly, I never bought expensive ones, they can buy their own expensive ones now Grin

mathanxiety · 06/09/2018 18:44

That looks pretty mild if he's been wearing them frequently in weather that allows outdoor play. Were the previous ones, the Clarks, worn outdoors much?

A little neighbour of mine wore actual holes in the toes of his brand new black leather school shoes riding his new two wheeler and using his toes for braking, after getting out from his first day back at school several years ago. His mum took the shoes back to the shop in tears and they gave her a new pair Grin. She really was distraught. Same child had worn a hole in the knee of his school trousers by the end of the first week.

Glad they offered the voucher. I second the suggestion of outdoor shops for future footwear.

Also, teach him to tie laces and you will never look back. It will broaden your choices considerably.

shoess · 06/09/2018 18:52

No change in play we are outside in any weather other than pouring with rain he'd be in his trainers.

I went back to Geox and said as they £25 would cover a pair of shoes in the sale I'd accept that. They came back and said the voucher had to be on full price items only but they'd double the voucher value to £50. So although they don't agree it's a fault I guess they are acknowledging that the shoes should last longer?

I'm considering these - they do have a rubber bumper but not a pointy toe one so hopefully will rub rather than fall off in lumps?

Has he been using them as a scooter/bike brake like my DS? If so, then yes I'd agree that its normal wear & tear.

Racecardriver · 06/09/2018 18:55

That doesn't look like normal wear and tear to me. Looks like misuse. You should take your DS to a doctor unless he had been purposefully dragging them. On the grounds.

ZzzMarchhare · 06/09/2018 18:58

My DS has the geo XX with a full bumper bar on for school and they are amazingly hard wearing.

shoess · 06/09/2018 19:02

@Racecardriver doctor? Why???

A 3.5 year old doesn't need a pair of £45 trainers. Just that really.

TuscanGreen · 06/09/2018 19:15

This looks totally normal

TuscanGreen · 06/09/2018 19:16

I do think though he may have been using his shoe as a brrake

Pinkkahori · 06/09/2018 19:20

My dd is 12 now and by far the worst wearing trainers she ever had were Geox. She loved them because they were light and flexible but they started to fall apart within a few week. I risked buying a second, slightly different pair and the same thing happened again.
We didn't buy Geox again.

Allgoodnamesaregone · 06/09/2018 19:29

When my DD was at playgroup she put a hole through the toes of her trainers in 2 weeks because her feet were her brakes on the trikes! At least they were cheap.
In Year 1 the bows came off her leather school shoes within a few weeks...when I complained Clark's said it's cos she'd sat on the carpet with her legs crossed and the bows have rubbed on the carpet!!! To make it worse they told me they were making some really good strong boys shoes which would be very difficult to scuff....I've taught in Reception for 20 years...girls scuff their shoes too!
My DD started year 5 yesterday & there is a mark on her shoes already.
OP those shoes look fine after 6 weeks of summer wear to me. It is just normal wear & tear.

FaveNumberIs2 · 06/09/2018 19:56

Wait until he’s 15, has you paying £150 for Nike AirMax, and has holes in the soles in four months. THEN you can complain.

Pigsears · 06/09/2018 19:59

The replacement ones look nice and tough.

Off topic... but most girls school shoes are rubbish for grip. two of my girls have moved into the boys range so that they have grip on their shoes to run in the playground.

Leapfrog44 · 06/09/2018 20:53

they look like he's been scooting. They scuffed not wrecked!

Hushhush89 · 06/09/2018 20:55

Totally normal. Now whats not normal is sending your child to school on the first day of the school year to then pick them up and both shoes have holes in at the top

CountFosco · 06/09/2018 21:10

These are DS's (age 6) after 9 days wear. I have shoes that are 2 years old that aren't as scruffy! Some kids are really tough on shoes, DD2 once went through the sole of her school shoes by half term Shock.
