Shoes destroyed (pictures included)

NC as potentially outing.

£45 pair of trainers look like this after 6weeks of wear, manufacturer says its 'wear and tear'. My son is 3.5 years, size 11.5 shoes.

AIBU in thinking this isn't normal wear and tear?

Pics are of ours and a google image of the nearest equivalent!

Don't three year olds pretty much grow out of their shoes after a couple of months anyway?

I'd choke at £45 for a pair of toddler trainers but they're just heavily scuffed. No wear to tops so should be good for a little while yet.

BrokenWing · 05/09/2018 18:51

Geox were brilliant when ds was younger and great for his sweaty feet but as soon as he hit the age where he was playing more football on concrete at school playtime they were getting destroyed too quickly. Nothing wrong with the shoes, they aren't designed for the type of abuse he was giving them.

Try to look out for shoes with rubber all around the toe to give it more protection. Start rite used to be quite good for rubber toes.

LemonysSnicket · 05/09/2018 18:59

Wow, my feet were that size when I was 10, you'll have a strapping lad!

shoess · 05/09/2018 19:02

@LemonysSnicket we've got him in rugby training already! He weighs 21kg.

I just don't feel like he's particularly rough. Last pair of shoes was a pair of Clark's trainer shoes that lasted the full winter and were outgrown. They still looked better than these. I'd have re bought them if they went up to his size!

They’re scuffed Confused. Lumps haven’t just dropped off them! They’ve been scuffed off.

BananasAreTheSourceOfEvil · 05/09/2018 19:07

My youngest scuffs her shoes and they look just like that unfortunately! I now buy sturdy shoes just for P.E and a cheap pair that I don’t mind chucking after six weeks.

My oldest on the other hand, has immaculate shoes up until she grows out of them.

Frustratedboarder · 05/09/2018 19:10

My 3.5yr DS shots after 2 weeks! 😂😂

Sorry probably not much help but some kids are just hard on shoes... I'm aghast at your spending 45£ on preschool trainers, tbh Shock

Bluntness100 · 05/09/2018 19:11

I'd agree op, it doesn't look like the scuffs magically appeared and little bits fell out thr front toe for no reason, it looks like he's been using his toes for something, a scooter sounds about right.

You've done well to get a voucher from thr manufacturer, I think most would have claimed that's normal wear and tear. Seems you've a big lad who is heavy on his feet.

GinPink · 05/09/2018 19:12

YABU. My 3.5 year olds shoes are destroyed from wear and tear in that time. Is why I spend about a tenner on his shoes from Tesco, spending £45 on shoes at that age would be madness for me as we can't afford the necessary replacements x

Cachailleacha · 05/09/2018 19:13

They look fine to me. I would save the voucher for (or to put towards) his next pair of shoes when they are actually worn out or outgrown.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 05/09/2018 19:17

Not directly answering your question I realise but when we couldn't find DS shoes that weren't leather or laces, we ended up buying something like these we didn't buy this actual set, but I was trying to find the right sort of this:
www.amazon.co.uk/LOCK-LACES-Elastic-Tie-Shoelaces/dp/B00975EAJ6?tag=mumsnetforum-21
We had an issue with trying to find DD plain but full foot covering shoes that weren't laces either, so these came to the rescue again.

shoess · 05/09/2018 19:19

@Frustratedboarder that's the 'leather' though - it was the rubber toe bit I thought was awful. The rubber toe bumper bit literally came off in lumps and took the underneath leather with it. I'd expect scuffs and wear but not that.

But from this thread I've significantly overestimated how shoes should last!

I get my ds and dd (same size feet as yours) Velcro trainers at sports direct for about £15 a pair. The wear you've pictured looks normal to me for 6 weeks daily wear. I try and look for trainers that have the rubber sole come further up the front.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 05/09/2018 19:20

My DS is 3.5 and his shoes get like that pretty quickly. I just let him keep wearing them and hope they hold together until he outgrows them.

SuperGlowBug · 05/09/2018 19:22

I'd be annoyed too.

I bought some school shoes from M&S once, they weren't a lot cheaper than Clark's and lasted about 2 months! Clark's usually last us a year.

I returned them and both the shop assistant and manager were unbelievably rude, I was really shocked. They said that they aren't going to last as long as they are cheaper than Clark's and that it had been raining a lot and maybe that's why they fell apart Hmm. I was refused a refund.

I contacted head office who refunded them and gave also me a £20 voucher.

Chouetted · 05/09/2018 19:47

I scuff my shoes at the grand old age of 30 (not deliberately - my toes catch on steps going up them), and honestly that looks about right.

"Destroyed" would cover the soles dropping off, things like that. That shouldn't happen within a few weeks - I'd estimate six months to a year, by which time he'd need new shoes anyway.

donquixotedelamancha · 05/09/2018 19:53

Nope. We are talking boys here. Normal wear and tear.

Why would being boys make a difference? Where are they wearing the trainers?

DD does that to trainers in a few weeks. She scrapes the toes on the ground when walking or swinging. I don't spend £60 on her shoes for that reason.

Scotinoz · 05/09/2018 20:01

My 3 year old daughters shoes are like that 🙄 She uses her toes as brakes on her bike/scooter, and generally just trashes them. I buy Decathlon runners 😐

hennaoj · 05/09/2018 21:05

My 4 year old's geox nearly have holes in the toes after 4 weeks. He's very rough, uses his feet when braking on his bike (size 12!). To be fair I did buy them in the sale to use for playing in as he destroys shoes.

FlaviaAlbia · 05/09/2018 21:11

I had the same problem with a pair of Geox, it was so annoying as the previous pair still looked new after about 6 months of wear. For whatever reason the new pair looked trashed after a couple of weeks doing the same activities and it was the same style.

tickingthebox · 06/09/2018 12:52

He's scuffing the toes along the ground - I had to stop my DS2 doing the same when he was about 4 or 5 - he ruined a pair of school shoes in 4 weeks.

Have used Geox for my boys for years and they are the best around...last the longest

GeeksCanBeMumsToo · 06/09/2018 17:33

My 18 month old DD destroyed her Clark’s shoes after walking out of the shop. Think it depends a lot on the kid, but I’ve found shoes don’t look smart for long around here but as still usable.

Confusedbeetle · 06/09/2018 17:36

He has badly scuffed the toes by dragging them on the ground. It is normal wear and tear for a toddler

Pollaidh · 06/09/2018 17:37

DS (4) gets through Geox that quickly. I think the combination of heavy wear, scooter etc, and scuffing his feet does it. I have been quite surprised by how quickly (i.e. within 2-3 weeks) the Geox toes started coming apart, on about 3 different pairs. We've now moved on to Startrite for school, and hoping these hold up better to the abuse.
