AIBU to be shocked that the NSPCC cancelled their Facebook Live session with Mumsnetters, because they didn't like the questions? That they can't explain why they aren't putting children in danger?

I am reeling from this - Mumsnet promoted a Facebook Live for Thursday 12.30... to talk about keeping Kids safe from Abuse, and to publicise their PANTS and SpeakOut StaySafe campaigns.

NSPCC just didn't turn up - and only 4 hours later published a brief statement that said nothing!!!! So lots of people waiting for a no show.

It is fine for them to have the policies they have - IF THEY CAN EXPLAIN that they really are in all children's best interests and that they aren't putting girls at risk..... They haven't even tried to do that... Just ignored us and run. Ignored MUMSNET - which is full of people who raise or give money to the NSPCC, and who use it.

HOW??? I am bewildered beyond words.....

Oh ... and hopefully clicky link here of the questions Mumsnetters asked - really thoughtful cogent ones!

No answer to my question about safeguarding trans children from abusive adults? Weird, I thought it was all about trans people and their massive chance of facing abuse and suiciding.
Why does nobody care when it's the trans children I'm worried for?

If anyone has a google drive going btw, give me a shout as I have a pdf of the deleted thread :)
It's about 99% "this post has been deleted" though!

Sometimes it’s the bitch with the vagina in the next cubicle

Two times out of every hundred.

No answer to my question about safeguarding trans children from abusive adults?

What was the question ? Sorry I missed it. I won’t have the answer but these guys will... they’ve got all the stats.

BeyondAnOmnishambles · 05/09/2018 17:41

I'll c&p for you :)

...

I only have one question for nspcc - I didn't ask on the thread actually as I was going to do so during the fb live chat (side note; when nspcc weren't even on the thread and most posts there were after they no-showed, how can it be considered "derailed"??)

Anywho, happy for anyone to answer it, if they have an answer...?

Advice such as that given by allsorts and similar charities (I'm sure r0wan will have a link wink ) states that if a child discloses they are trans, people in authority must keep it a secret unless there is an immediate risk. How can that be squared with the advice that adults should not keep secrets for children, and that there is a link between offending and "our little secret". As some here are very keen to point out as if we are unaware? - abusers often hold positions of authority (when they are not family or friends).

What does the nspcc have to say about the allsorts advice? Do they agree that it directly opposes their own safeguarding advice? How can they advise schools on "speak out, stay safe" without mentioning it, either agreeing with or contradicting the advice that the teachers have had from other organisations?

How is this circle being squared?

Dosent appear that the NSPCC care

BettyDuMonde · 05/09/2018 17:46

Gosh, aren’t they smart to rumble the Code of The Biscuit?

I wonder if they know about the magical powers of Zoflora and the Horror of One’s Smalls being Darked On? 🙀

Anyone would think we’re using a completely public message board...

But I digress...

Now, who do you think would win a fight in a ladies lavvy between Cheryl Tweedy-Cole-Etc and Patty-Lou Hagan?

MuddlingMackem · 05/09/2018 18:21

@BeyondAnOmnishambles, I'm sure at least a couple of people asked that on the questions thread.

BeyondAnOmnishambles · 05/09/2018 18:22

Yeah Im quite sure I saw it too

SpiritedLondon · 05/09/2018 18:43

Hey omnishambles 👋

Re your question on the policy. Just a query, you wrote it

states that if a child discloses they are trans, people in authority must keep it a secret unless there is an immediate risk

I haven’t read the policy document - does it say “ keep it secret” or does it use another term like “confidential”? I’ve never seen a policy document that uses a term like secret in this way.

FermatsTheorem · 05/09/2018 18:45

Apologies for quoting such an offensive post, but if you don't hold it up to the light, you can't see what's wrong with it: "Sorry got distracted... my point being there’s a danger in being fixated with one type of risk. Sometimes it’s the bitch with the vagina in the next cubicle"

Time for a reminder: 98% of the people in prison in the UK for sexual offences are men.

Criminal psychologist David Lisak's work on undetected rapists on American university campuses shows that 6% of men (in random surveys) will admit to behaviour which meets the legal definition of rape. These men have, on average, 6 rapes to their name.

"But, but, but, there are some nasty women out there..." doesn't really cut it when it comes to the relative risks posed by the two groups.

SpiritedLondon · 05/09/2018 18:47

Well if you found it so offensive why have you repeated it?

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 05/09/2018 18:56

SpiritedLondon, Fermat started her post with this explanation:

...if you don't hold it up to the light, you can't see what's wrong with it.

I had no problem understanding her.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 05/09/2018 18:57

Because if you don't hold it up to the light, you can't see what's wrong with it: LIKE SHE SAID RIGHT THERE.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 05/09/2018 18:58

Prawn types faster than me. But we all read quicker than spirited.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 05/09/2018 19:00

And if you don't know that 'bitch' is really really offensive these days then I presume the understanding bit of the brain is broken too.

BeyondAnOmnishambles · 05/09/2018 19:03

The word secret is not used, but the meaning is the same.

SpiritedLondon · 05/09/2018 19:05

Do you imagine I have a stammer?

I wasn’t comparing risks - but public toilets are not “safe spaces” - there is no magical force field around them, absolutely anyone can walk in whatever the symbol on the door and sometimes, just sometimes the danger comes in the form of a female who proceeds to repeatedly bash your head against the sink. It’s best not to be complacent.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 05/09/2018 19:13

Do you imagine I have a stammer?

??

I haven't imagined you at all. Given what the last few days have uncovered I try to imagine all TRAs as being smooth beige formless blobs as a self preservation mechanism against imagining any of the fur baby friends

SpiritedLondon · 05/09/2018 19:16

Lol. maybe I’m dyslexic ( are you actually picking on me for how fast you perceive me to be reading?)

omnishambles I was going to proffer a suggestion about the policy document. It’s probably similar to policy around HIV positive children when even foster parents aren’t told - but I guess you’re not actually looking for an answer.

FermatsTheorem · 05/09/2018 19:17

For every 1 woman in prison for sex offences, there are 49 men. So we have a method at our disposal - single sex spaces - to cut the relative risk by a factor of 49. 49! That's big. Epidemiologists and public health campaigners can only dream of a method which would deliver that sort of level of risk reduction.

But no, let's get rid of it, because some women do it too, so we don't need to worry about (non-trans, for the avoidance of doubt) predators in dresses who now cannot be challenged in women's spaces, because they can (falsely) claim to be trans.

Sometimes I despair of the decline in basic numeracy among the public.

LemonJello · 05/09/2018 19:19

just sometimes the danger comes in the form of a female who proceeds to repeatedly bash your head against the sink

Run for your lives everyone! Your LIVES!!!

Or...not. I am not remotely fearful of this fate befalling me. I don’t want to get changed next to a man tho.

SpiritedLondon · 05/09/2018 19:19

"But, but, but, there are some nasty women out there..."

Just a little bit of dramatic licence then.

LemonJello · 05/09/2018 19:21

I try to imagine all TRAs as being smooth beige formless blobs as a self preservation mechanism against imagining any of the fur baby friends

Very wise.

SpiritedLondon · 05/09/2018 19:22

I haven’t said get rid of women only spaces

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 05/09/2018 19:25

No I am ridiculing you because you wrote this snarky remark, Well if you found it so offensive why have you repeated it? in response to a person who had very clearly stated why she was repeating your offensive remark. Because that is ridiculous behaviour. I don't know whether you are dyslexic (I do, you're not otherwise you wouldn't be bandying it about) but if you are then snarking at things you believe people have said on the Internet after a cursory reading is a poor tactic.

I am also answering your questions - you're welcome.
