And move to Wales??

So here it is. I'm a qualified NHS professional with lots of options career-wise. No children, no debts or mortgage.
But I really don't want to stick around with my OH, he has made it clear over the last 5 years that he isn't going anywhere in life and (I have posted previously about this) when I try to break up the relationship will turn on the charm and wear me down until I agree to stick it out.
There is a recruitment campaign for the NHS in wales at the moment and they will pay relocation costs (not a lot, but enough to tidy up my current rental property, pay a bond on a new one, maybe hire a van to move my stuff). There are jobs that I could do now, some are 6 or 12 months fixed term; so if I didn't like it I could come back easily.
My parents have a holiday cottage in Snowdonia that I could do the changeovers for if I moved up there.
It's not like I'm moving to new zealand or australia, I could technically come back for a weekend visit and lots of my friends regularly come to wales for breaks, so I wouldn't be totally isolated.

plus - Wales!

Am I mad??

Absolutely go for it!!!

Life is too short - best of luck with the move :)

diddl · 02/09/2018 14:03

Sounds like a great plan.

Am I the only one who thinks that the rentals seem pricey?

AjasLipstick · 02/09/2018 14:03

First property in Trefnant is only offered for 6 months initially. It says longer may be an option.

BoreOfWhabylon · 02/09/2018 14:05

Go for it! Fly high!!!

Present him with a fait accompli. Do not cave when he stsrts to,plead. You havevoutgrown each other, why would you stay?

ladyface69 · 02/09/2018 14:07

please can no-one rent that cottage before me haha!

HollowTalk · 02/09/2018 14:08

A house for under £600 a month isn't pricey, @diddl. Not anywhere.

ThisMorningWentBadly · 02/09/2018 14:10

Do you speak Welsh? I would have thought for the nhs in north Wales it would be a necessary.

Orangecake123 · 02/09/2018 14:10

£580 a month for a 2 bed!? Shock

Sorry I'm just used to London prices. Do what is best for you!

Beaverhausen · 02/09/2018 14:11

Go for it OP, ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun like the wind!

ThisMorningWentBadly · 02/09/2018 14:11

Not trying to put you off sounds like a brilliant plan but it might be worth checking before you get to far down the line.

HollowTalk · 02/09/2018 14:13

Wales is a big country and some parts of it are very depressed. I wouldn't move somewhere unless I knew the area quite well.

MikeUniformMike · 02/09/2018 14:18

The area OP is moving to is not too depressed but the nearest towns are. Chester and Wrexham are the nearest big towns.

BookWitch · 02/09/2018 14:18

I am from Anglesey and just moved back after 20 years away.

I am loving it, esp now we are into Sept and autumn is approaching (def not on holiday this time!)

Definitely go for it OP, it is a fantastic place to live.

AjasLipstick · 02/09/2018 14:19

Badly no it's not a rule that NHS employees have to speak Welsh.

Hollow OP's parents own a house in Snowdonia. I'm sure she knows what it's like. She has a career which will enable her to take advantage of the lower rents and beautiful landscapes on offer.

diddl · 02/09/2018 14:24

"A house for under £600 a month isn't pricey, @diddl."

I suppose it ight just be the pics.

The first one is lovely from the outside & the garden looks nice.

But the kitchen!!

NCPuffin · 02/09/2018 14:26

I'm placemarking living vicariously through you Go for it!!!

TwllBach · 02/09/2018 14:27

As an Essex girl that moved up this way, I would say try and learn a little bit of Welsh! It's a lovely language once you get in to the swing of it and while Conwy might not be particularly Welsh, there are lots of advantages to speaking it. You might end up in Bangor hospital and Welsh is always appreciated there with your patients. I dabble on the Duolingo app, but you do have to be careful it doesn't teach you the South Walian. Download the Say Something in Welsh podcasts!

MikeUniformMike · 02/09/2018 14:27

Brain not working, Chester and Wrexham are the nearest big towns. It is the small towns that are a bit depressed.

CaMePlaitPas · 02/09/2018 14:30

You come this way but once, do it.

caoraich · 02/09/2018 14:32

Do it!

Friend of mine moved from Edinburgh to North Wales with the NHS - working in Betsi Cadwaladr. Best thing she ever did. She has fab quality of life, loves the hospital she's in and has found she has a lot more disposable income as her rent is about 2/3 of what she was spending in Edinburgh. Plus now she has a place big enough for weekend visitors Grin
She's an AHP, band 6.

Don't worry about speaking Welsh - most people do in their daily lives but do also speak English. In her experience she picked up the basics very quickly and people were happy to help her out at work on the odd occasion there was an elderly patient with no English. There's no expectation of being a fluent Welsh speaker in NHS Wales.

tolerable · 02/09/2018 14:34

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!!!!!!!!!!! fantastic post.wishing you the very best of luck with it all. on ya go!

Cindie943811A · 02/09/2018 14:38

Good luck OP for a great new start in life. Remember the saying that at the end of your life it’s not what you did that you regret but what you didn’t do.
This time next year you’ll be stuck in the same dire situation that you want to get out of only a year older.

MikeUniformMike · 02/09/2018 14:41

Welsh is often a must have on job application forms. Might not affect OP.

HoleyCoMoley · 02/09/2018 14:42

Which hospital are you looking to move to

PinaGrigio · 02/09/2018 14:42

Go for it, OP. We moved from SE England to Snowdonia 6 years ago and have never regretted it. The quality of life is much better and we have settled here fine and made lots of friends. It's a lot easier to learn Welsh when you hear it every day (IMO) and seconding TwllBach's advice to download the SaySomethinginWelsh lessons and go from there.

What's the worst that can happen? You don't like it and move back. But far better to have tried it than be forever wishing you had. Good luck!
