The schools website has said that term is from 3 September onwards. I’ve just found out there’s a training day on 31st August, and I’ve no child care ... Aibu to just say I can’t go?

OP posts:
pieceofpurplesky · 27/08/2018 16:41

What subject do you teach OP?

drJava · 27/08/2018 16:41

@eyeoresancerre

Not a teacher (management with 1 class a week) and have never been an RE teacher. Maths and IT, if you must know. I would love an hour debating anyone with a religious bent but live vicariously with MUN.

We don't do all of our planning the week before children arrive. However, we do a lot and all staff are contracted to be in for the week beforehand. Some is taken up with PD etc. New staff start school two weeks before children arrive.

You think my (anonymously) saying that the pope is a "fucking mother fucker" disqualifies me from being a teacher / working in education?

But if you find me more offensive than the possibility
That the Pope protected priests when they were getting fucking fiddly
Then listen to me, motherfucker, this here is a fact
You are just as morally misguided as that motherfucking
Power-hungry, self-aggrandised bigot in the stupid fucking hat

Lundi · 27/08/2018 16:44

Well that escalated quickly 😳

ajandjjmum · 27/08/2018 16:51

drJava - think you should move in to creative writing!

stillnotTheDoctor · 27/08/2018 16:52

Rtft and can't for the life of me see where the pope came into it.

yunalis · 27/08/2018 16:54

Tbh if I found out my first day back after a year wasn't when I expected, even if it was only a few days, I would immediately panic 🤣. It would throw off all my mental preparation for it.

Porcelaincup · 27/08/2018 17:18

YANBU at all. Finding it really difficult to understand why others are saying you are.

Term starts on 3rd. Pretty sure this is the case for most UK state secondary schools.

Some teachers choose to prep at school during the holidays, which is fine. Their choice. This includes attending on exam days - totally up the the individual teacher. However, unless you are on the senior leadership scale, you are absolutely not contracted to work during this time.

STPCD states that, if you are mainscale, you should be available for 195 days per year of which 190 are days you are required to teach. If the 31st falls outside of this, you are absolutely not required to be there. In fact, you are not being paid for it. You are paid for those 195 days.

As a teacher who fought hard for the STPCD I am disappointed in this who are saying the OP is being unreasonable.

VickyEadie · 27/08/2018 17:23

You must be aware that some schools in some areas start back in August, though? It all depends on their calendars.

As the OP has drip-fed an awful lot of information, who knows what the case is here?

WoWsers16 · 27/08/2018 17:24

Teachers are being paid throughout the year- and things like staff training days are part of that payment. It is unreasonable to think just because you can not find childcare then you should not go in. People who have children who have non educational jobs can not say to their work- oh I have children that have Summer off so I can not work at all throughout Summer.

As a teacher I am finding it hard why - having your maternity leave, then using the system to get paid full over Summer- you would then be complaining about having to go in on a training day.

Staff Training days are when the school decide.

stillnotTheDoctor · 27/08/2018 17:25

Personally some time before school ended I'd have been in touch to say 'hi, I'm going to be back in September. When's the first day back'? Not relied on the school website.

PurpleDaisies · 27/08/2018 17:27

What subject do you teach OP?

What’s that got to do with anything? Confused

Porcelaincup · 27/08/2018 17:29

Fair point VickyEdie. No schools near me start before the 31st. I do, however, appreciate there might be some who do.

What I don’t think is ok, is posters who are telling the OP they should expect to be in for prep over the Summer.

Porcelaincup · 27/08/2018 17:32

WoWsers16 mainscale teachers are paid for those 195 days

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 27/08/2018 17:37

Term starts on 3rd. Pretty sure this is the case for most UK state secondary schools.

Round here most go back on the 5th although for some that is an inset day.

I have inset on the 5th but DS’s term starts that day.

Is that you Ted?

VickyEadie · 27/08/2018 17:47

My pal lives in Leicester. her school has always gone back in August.

As I said, it depends on the school's calendar.

BG2015 · 27/08/2018 17:50

What do you teach OP? What subject/year group?

Even if the first day is Form Day what about the rest of the week?

I have done so much prep over the holiday (both at home and School) as I find it gives me more time over weekends and I feel less stressed and more prepared. With a family it's paramount to be thinking ahead.

WoWsers16 · 27/08/2018 17:52

Porcelaincup

Yes teaching days and 5 training days throughout the year - this is a paid day which you have to be in for

Typhoon2000 · 27/08/2018 17:56

Hi
I would check the school website first. However, if the School Teachers Pay and Conditions Document has been applied to your school, then the new term cannot start until 1st of September otherwise you are being required to work in excess of the stated days of the above document. This is 195 days of which 5 days may be inset in any one academic year

Porcelaincup · 27/08/2018 18:14

Thanks Typhoon2000. I’m totally with you.

Clionba · 27/08/2018 18:18

So if the inset day is on Aug 31st, she doesn't have to go because it's before Sept 1st?

Porcelaincup · 27/08/2018 18:19

WoWsers16 can you please check that the conditions stated by Typhoon2000 are correct

WoWsers16 · 27/08/2018 18:19

Can’t wait to have my training days off next year to save money on childcare :)

MiddleClassProblem · 27/08/2018 18:20

Dn is in Leicestershire. They go back this week but they broke up really early.

HesterMacaulay · 27/08/2018 18:26

The only way it would fit pay and conditions would be if the 31st Aug is the last of 5 insets of the current academic year. Rather than the first of 5 for 2018-2019. If it's the latter I can't see how they can do it.
But if it is the former I.e. the last inset of 2017-2018 the OP would be required because she returned to work before the end of the academic year.
