The schools website has said that term is from 3 September onwards. I’ve just found out there’s a training day on 31st August, and I’ve no child care ... Aibu to just say I can’t go?

lookingforwardtoautumn · 27/08/2018 15:53

Rock up and wing it Shock going to work on my scheduled date? Really?

OP posts:
MiddleClassProblem · 27/08/2018 15:54

Either way you were relying on the term dates on the school website with us saying when pupils come back so you must have expected to go on on the 1st or 2nd at least.

hmmwhatatodo · 27/08/2018 15:55

Did someone really say that nursery doesn’t involve as much prep as other year groups? Haha.

ajandjjmum · 27/08/2018 15:55

Sadly OP, you're living up to the stereotype of teachers having god knows how many weeks holiday a year, with no work to do in that time.
You really do need to start taking responsibility for your life.

SawnUpLooRoll · 27/08/2018 15:55

OP, teacher here.

Get in touch with your line manager or the Head ASAP. If you haven't been given any emails about directed days at the start of the term, timetables, etc, ask them why as you were under the impression that term started on the 3rd as directed days are rarely in August. Explain that you're working on childcare, but can they allow DC in with you if you are in dire straights.

I too have many, many questions about the contact between you and school, and that in-school prep doesn't feature during the break for your school's staff, but I suspect you wanted constructive suggestions rather than criticism.

Purpleartichoke · 27/08/2018 15:55

Op, the number of days you can miss work is not infinite. If you are using a nursery, you are going to find that your child is often too ill to go in, but really isn’t so sick that care must be provided by a parent. Those days are very challenging as a working parent. If you stay home for every one of them, you may find yourself without a job. I wouldn’t start the year off with a tick mark in the absent column if you can possibly avoid it.

lookingforwardtoautumn · 27/08/2018 15:55

I don’t know why they said that

Nursery is a LOT of work

Rock up and wing it going to work on my scheduled date? Really?

If you have not met with other members of staff to discuss SOW and new curriculum changes then I don't see how you could have planned effectively. So I would agree you are winging it.

lookingforwardtoautumn · 27/08/2018 15:56

We’ve never done that.

It happens in staff meetings

OP posts:
FASH84 · 27/08/2018 15:56

OP if you're saying you're not robust enough for this thread, good luck teaching teenagers and managing a secondary school teacher's workload...
You've drip fed contextual information that impacts on the situation, your method of never going into school in the holidays is highly unusual, I come from a family of teachers, and one of my closest friends is a head, so YABU to expect people to know that you don't go in, or have any colleague contact in the holidays, without giving the information up front. You are also being unreasonable having taken no effort at all to contact your line manager and ask when they want you in, given you've been back on the payroll since July. It's also unrealistic as a teacher to expect to have a day off every time PFB has a sniffle, if your child's teacher took time off that regularly in ten to 18 years time you're telling me you'd have no issue with the disruption to their education? YABU not to have contingency childcare plans. PPs have suggested where you can get an emergency nanny and still you are simply being abrupt. How long into term do you plan on going off on long term sick leave? I don't have a crystal ball but it seems likely.

MissVanjie · 27/08/2018 15:57

well, but you said earlier you started back at work on July 21st? (which is an odd day for a return date, given that it was a Saturday but hey ho) except 'obviously' didn't go in (again not sure what is 'obvious' about this beyond it being a Saturday, but round here term didn't officially end for staff and some pupils until the 24th)

lookingforwardtoautumn · 27/08/2018 15:57

I’ve taught since 2094, I’m sure I’ll be fine Hmm

OP posts:
Sweetpea55 · 27/08/2018 15:57

Lazypuppy i was thinking the same thing myself. Teaching isnt like working at Tescos's ,you need to be there all the time, your job demands it..
OP. you seem quite ill prepared and a bit of a ninny

lookingforwardtoautumn · 27/08/2018 15:57

OP posts:
LinkyPlease · 27/08/2018 15:57

Or find and pay for some emergency childcare, as I suggested a few posts previously.

I don't think all the laying into the OP is justified, but equally I've suggested a perfectly sensible solution which OP has ignored, so I do wonder if OP is really looking for an answer or just an excuse to moan / justify missing the training day.
If so, go for it OP, but be aware there might be consequences

MissVanjie · 27/08/2018 15:59

above post was in response to "Rock up and wing it going to work on my scheduled date? Really?"

Silvercatowner · 27/08/2018 15:59

I wonder whether there are HTs/SMTs in schools who have inset on weird days, on Mumsnet, checking their emails right at this moment......

lookingforwardtoautumn · 27/08/2018 15:59

Yes I get that Linky ... I’m trying to sort something (sorry, I’ve been a bit attacked on here!) but in fairness it’s a bank holiday and I’m limited in what I can do. If I can’t do anything I’ll just have to apologise profusely and take the day as unpaid leave.

OP posts:
lookingforwardtoautumn · 27/08/2018 16:00

Need to be there all the time Hmm like a year 7 class I had one year who I convinced them I live down in the stock cupboard.

Yes, it’s true you don’t just do 8-3

However, I have never yet arranged to meet and collaborate with colleagues when all on holiday.

OP posts:
Hiphopopotamus · 27/08/2018 16:01

Not trying to attack you OP, and it sounds like you have also been let down but your management...

But were you really organising your back to work by look at the school website for term dates, rather than logging onto your emails?

Hiphopopotamus · 27/08/2018 16:02

Especially as you actually 'returned to work' on the 21st of July, so surely should have been checking in with your work emails and getting up to speed?

lookingforwardtoautumn · 27/08/2018 16:02

I have logged onto my email! Nothing about when we are back.

OP posts:
HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 27/08/2018 16:03

The trouble is you appear to have spoken to no one at work for the entire duration of your Maternity leave or the summer so I am not sure what you are expecting. Whilst it is unfortunate you appear to not have received an email you have to understand you are just as accountable for knowing when you need to be in work.

People have suggested numerous ideas for resolving the issue and not once have you shown gratitude. I agree with a previous poster it genuinely sounds like you wanted people to justify that you didn't have to go into work.

lookingforwardtoautumn · 27/08/2018 16:04

Well no, that’s because I’ve been on maternity leave and on my holiday.

OP posts:
MichonnesBBF · 27/08/2018 16:04

@MiddleClassProblem

I can assure you I am not in a huff, but your comments are misleading,

They defo don't have as much prep, This is not true.
