Rodrigo removed from the B.B. house

I think the meaning of the word has a different meaning in these current times

I personally hate the term and thinknit should be totally banned

But can see why it’s confussing for younger people with it in so many pop songs

Well, I used it, firstly, then I was told I shouldn't use it, and now the argument as to why I shouldn't seems to be that I am white. I never said I was white.

My argument as to why the word shouldn't be banned or censored altogether has nothing to do with my race. It is to do with the context in which the word is being used.

RebeccaBunchLawyer · 26/08/2018 10:51

So there are people here who say white people must not use this word, but it’s ok for black people to do so? Really? If it’s such a bad word, why are you happy for anyone to use it?

Surely the more white people hear it, the more normalised it will come, particularly with the younger generation?

The word doesn’t bother me either way tbh, and I have heard it used by all races, ages and sexes, mainly because they are used to hearing it in music videos by black artists etc.

That's the concert from the thread I mentioned! I couldn't remember who it was.

I agree. It's very easy if you're very culturally aware and have parents who'll discuss identity politics and history and the n word with you. It's quite another if you are a child who doesn't have that and is singing along to some songs you like. Branding a child racist and putting it on their school record for singing a song that others were singing purely because they were white is wrong in my opinion. (Personally, I'd take the view that any songs with offensive or explicit language/content are not appropriate in schools and would have had a chat with all students involved about why songs with the n word in aren't ok in school).

stevesmithsmum · 26/08/2018 11:02

Hey all. Disclaimer - privileged white person here, hence I’ll burn in the fires of hell If I even consider using the "n" word - I get that.

I also get the fact that "people of colour" are reclaiming and owning the use of the word "na", not "ner".

What about those between shades of white and not white. Hispanics, Indians, aboriginals, Asian? Are they allowed to use it? Can they sing along to the rap songs in the knowledge they ( or there distant forebearers) have never repressed a Black person?

P3onyPenny · 26/08/2018 11:03

Exactly Maisie

Loki yes you spoke to your child. Many kids aren't so fortunate and don't have a conversation with their parents about all sorts of things.

skippy67 · 26/08/2018 11:21

Makes me laugh how angry white people get when it's suggested that black people can use a word that they can't. I've never said the n word, never will. I love rap, grime etc and manage to enjoy the music without saying/ singing it.

P3onyPenny · 26/08/2018 11:36

Whose angry? Pretty sure everybody on this thread has never said the word and never will so let's not get into pc top trumps shut down.

SoupDragon · 26/08/2018 11:41

What does he think the white kids at school are singing? They don't "self censor" and shouldn't have to.

DS doesn’t sing that word. His friend, who is black, does.

LokiBear · 26/08/2018 11:42

Some people on this thread are confusing equality with equity. White and black communities do not need 'equal' rights to that word in order to live in an equitable society.

To think the n word needs to be completely banned
P3onyPenny · 26/08/2018 11:45

My kids don't,clearly some of their white friends do. Clearly school and their parents are oblivious. I find it a concern that the word can slide in unchecked and is becoming more widely used.

Floaty2018 · 26/08/2018 11:48

But if a white person ever questions a single little thing like this 'how come blacks can use the N word' thing, they are shut down and called racist!

"A single little thing"! We live in a world where it's so easy to learn about historical events (single little things!) (try using that same device that you access MN from). I wish the ignorant amongst the posters here would GOOGLE why black people are reclaiming the word, rather than coming onto bloody MN for back pats and reassurance that you're not the only idiot in the village.

P3onyPenny · 26/08/2018 11:51

Who's

Lockheart · 26/08/2018 11:57

My ex used to like lots of grime and rap music, with heavy use of the word. It made me uncomfortable, and one time I asked him if we could listen to something that didn't include lyrics about "shooting s up" since it really wasn't very pleasant - he chided me for using the word.

I admit I was confused.

P3onyPenny · 26/08/2018 12:04

Actually if you Google Floaty you'll find not everybody feels like that.

metro.co.uk/2017/08/05/nobody-should-use-the-n-word-not-even-black-people-6818944/

There is more but I can't link because the word is in the title. As I said nobody white or black should tell those black people that have an issue with it to just suck it up.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 26/08/2018 13:23

'Blacks' Hmm

NotACleverName · 26/08/2018 13:24

What about those between shades of white and not white. Hispanics, Indians, aboriginals, Asian? Are they allowed to use it?

They're not black, it's not their word to use. No ifs, no buts.

Worldpeace123 · 26/08/2018 13:24

I think it's a very difficult subject.
When white people use it, it evokes memories of slavery, racism and so on. When black people use it, it's like self-deprecating. Black people who use that word, strangely feel a sense of power in that only THEY can call themselves the n-word and nobody else should.
Also, it should be noted that the n-word is derived from the word Negroe which is widely used with not so much farce. (in most cases)

SpringSnow · 26/08/2018 13:31

You can't ban thinks just because you don't like them. This thread just shows the authoritarian nature of the left.

SpringSnow · 26/08/2018 13:32

@LokiBear - so you want to give certain sections of society special privileges?

BitchQueen90 · 26/08/2018 13:46

I really don't get why white people are so bothered by this topic and I'm white. I don't use the word. If black people want to use it then why would it bother me?

You can’t bam words apart from anything else it’s pointless. If racists can’t use that word they’ll just use another. It’s the attitudes behind the word that need to be challenged.

RibbonAurora · 26/08/2018 13:51

White people complaining about not being able to use the n word.

No, if this is really a hardship for you, seriously, how often do you need to say the n word and in what contexts? Is this inability to use it actually creating a large amount of n word-shaped gaps in your daily conversations? If so you're totallyprobably a racist.

NotACleverName · 26/08/2018 13:58

You'll never convince me that a 3rd or 4th generation British , middle class schoolboy who happens to be black has any more right to sing it than a white boy...

What have generations and class got to do with it? If the hypothetical schoolboy is black he can say it. The white boy can't.

staydazzling · 26/08/2018 13:59

I dont think its helpful to ban language, but an understanding of why you cant use it is neccesary, i do think its very hypocritical of rappers to use the n word claim noone else can, but generate obscene wealth from music littered with mysoginistic and homophobic language, that double standard needs to change. The only thing more irritating then outrage culture is selective outrage culture.
