To ask if you keep cash at home for emergencies?

Lookatmemeow · 24/08/2018 22:26

By emergencies I mean things like

  • mass credit card failure
  • power cuts
  • banking systems going down

I don't routinely keep cash at home but considering it to mitigate for issues out of my hands. AIBU to ask if you keep emergency cash and how much?

No I don’t. Never crossed my mind to. Maybe I should!

BlessYourCottonSocks · 24/08/2018 22:28

Have a bit - but it wouldn't go far in your Zombie Apocalypse situation! I generally have about £20 - £30 stuffed in a jar in case of emergency.

NaomiNagata · 24/08/2018 22:28

I keep £5000 in a safe, and around £500 in a jar in the kitchen. I think I'd be mad not too... just incase.

Mum2jenny · 24/08/2018 22:29

Yes, around £200 in the house at all times

sweetkitty · 24/08/2018 22:30

That’s what the children’s piggy banks are for!

Mum2jenny · 24/08/2018 22:30

Shit, I do not have s bid enough stash

Mum2jenny · 24/08/2018 22:31

A big enough stash....

HolyMountain · 24/08/2018 22:31

Yes we’ve got a fair amount.

Parisbun · 24/08/2018 22:33

I keep a small float for birthdays etc and for the emergencies that arise with Dcs needing stuff at the last minute.
But Im totally aware that we have in our MN midst working people who have nothing right at this minute and I dont want to rub it in.
Im feeling bad enough that I consistently forget to add stuff for the foodbank when I do a big shop in Asda.

Leeds2 · 24/08/2018 22:33

I keep £200 too. In one of those fake baked bean tins! Unfortunately, I take the occasional note out, and never replace it!

OliviaStabler · 24/08/2018 22:33

Ye, but only about £30.

MongerTruffle · 24/08/2018 22:33

If there was a mass banking system failure, cash would be worthless. In modern economies, cash is only worth money as long as people have faith in the government that it is worth something.
(I still keep £2000 because I'm paranoid.)

Effic · 24/08/2018 22:35

Not zombie apocalypse/banking system collapse type amount but always enough for a taxi to the nearest hospital/friend in melt down/retrieve teenager from town type amount

HerRoyalNotness · 24/08/2018 22:35

Yes, we have about £250 cash that dH saved up from his weekly spends to give to me for a gift. Instead I earmarked it for emergency savings. I also have another few hundred from selling things around the house. I either use it for something for the kids or bank it when it gets to be a large amount. Right now it’s there so we can use just in case.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 24/08/2018 22:36

I've got a tenner in the car. I should probably up it to £20.

Bimgy85 · 24/08/2018 22:36

A few hundred in case of emergencies.

SabineUndine · 24/08/2018 22:37

I never have more than what’s in my purse and that’s often only coppers. Am I weird?

Nosleeptill · 24/08/2018 22:39

I have $200 stashed away for emergencies. I haven't touched it in about ten years

Sugarhunnyicedtea · 24/08/2018 22:39

I've got a penny jar, probably around £50 in there. Oh, and £10 in my son's phone case as I insist he has emergency cash at all times

Therunecaster · 24/08/2018 22:40

Never used to but now have about 50 pounds between me and DP.

Ansumpasty · 24/08/2018 22:41

I have £1 in my dressing table drawer. Can’t think what it would be good for, besides emergency tooth fairy.

NaomiNagata · 24/08/2018 22:42

Every woman should have a bit of mad money!!!

If you've not got money to spare then that's different, but if you do then why not keep some in the house? There have been quite a few visa failures lately so we could quite easily be without cards for a day or 2, or more. You need cash just incase!

teaandtoast · 24/08/2018 22:42

Hmm, 57p.

Mum2jenny · 24/08/2018 22:43

I'm thinking I should probably keep around £500 in the house, or am I being paranoid!

DickensianHysteric · 24/08/2018 22:43

I only have a spare 50p piece in my kitchen drawer, burglars, if you're reading. Wink
