To ask if you keep cash at home for emergencies?

By emergencies I mean things like

  • mass credit card failure
  • power cuts
  • banking systems going down

I don't routinely keep cash at home but considering it to mitigate for issues out of my hands. AIBU to ask if you keep emergency cash and how much?

It was absolute mayhem after I left apparently - I was right at the front of the queue when the machines stopped working so missed all the excitement!

secretselkie · 25/08/2018 11:39

I try to have around £50 in the house most of the time, more if my DH is working away ..

bluemoonchances · 25/08/2018 11:40

@MsHopey well I'm sorted then! I may not have cash in the house but I have a very well stocked drinks cupboard!! GrinGrin but I'm not wasting my best gin on bombs and bartering!! Grin

secretselkie · 25/08/2018 11:42

... although thinking about it I should probably up it a bit as our nearest ATM is 3 miles away, has a charge to use it & doesn’t always work😕

Lookatmemeow · 25/08/2018 12:39

AmberLangslow
Yes this was the a right PITA for us to as we were halfway through a 6 hour drive and had stopped for lunch. No cash with us and no ATMs working.

I'm planning on £50 in car and £200 in house somewhere I think - as suggested by pp.

DP often gets paid in cash so we tend to have a fair bit floating around at any given time.

Ontheboardwalk · 25/08/2018 12:46

Used to have £200 stashed away in the house but I think that’s all been spent. This thread has made me think on to my replace.

Between £30 to £50 and change stashed in the car

Lana1234 · 25/08/2018 12:55

The babies piggy bank if that counts? I think I will put away a small amount though, just enough for a taxi to and from hospital amount in case of emergency.

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/08/2018 12:56

Nope. Very rarely have cash as always get paid into bank. Self employed maternity nurse

If go out always put stuff on card. Whether credit if costly or debit

Tho I do keep a £20 note in back of phone but that’s more if I run out of house without purse etc

Always have phone

Emergency £40 that we don't touch unless absolutely necessary (Taxi to A&E or similar situation) and about £15 for popping to the shop for milk/bread, for last minute "I need a pound for X thing at school!" - and for the ice cream van!

The local shop does actually accept cards (and has a cash machine, albeit one that charges) but occasionally the card one seems to be a bit temperamental so I like the back up.

HollaHolla · 25/08/2018 13:10

I’m about 10 miles from the nearest A&E, and live alone. So - I like to have enough in case I ever need a middle of the night taxi. I’ve got about £150 at the moment, as I got £50 birthday money recently.

LaPufalina · 25/08/2018 13:16

Nothing here apart from a change jar and £10 in DD's piggybank! I use uber for taxis here and we have three cashpoints within three minutes' walk.

BlueRabbitWasNaughty · 25/08/2018 13:18

I did have £500 stashed in my bedside table..... until some scumbags decided to break in.

Moral of the story - never keep expensive things or cash in your bedroom as that's where the burglars expect it to be!

AgentJohnson · 25/08/2018 13:31

I’ve got thirty euros in a jam jar for the only emergency that happens in our house, the ‘I need x amount for the thing that I’m just now telling you about’ emergency.

dobbythedoggy · 25/08/2018 13:41

Enough for dh to survive a couple of weeks without me being around around or able to get to cash point/do an online shop. He refuses to have a bank card which is a pain but he inherited his mother's recless spending habbits and doesn't trust himself with one. Plus enough for a couple of sunday/middle of the night taxi runs to the hospital and back. He really struggled when ds was admitted to hospital the first time. So we slowly saved a little bit at a time to get enough for bus/taxi fare and for him to buy food he knows how to cook. We had pretty much full cupboards at the time and he found it difficult to feed dd once he had run out of bung in the oven stuff. His slowly learning to cook a few things from scratch but works when the children eat so is my job mostly. Also not needed as extra stress at times like that.

Emergency money is also kept with ds's rescue meds. Enough for a return taxi to the hospital and a couple of meals there. We also have a hospital bag packed up for me/ds at home that has extra money and change in.

I'm building up a small amount of cash at the moment for getting in a skint shop in an emergency.

Plus a £20 bag of £1 coins that I keep topped up for when dd needs money for school.

And whatever I've yet to bank of our christmas present change fund. And the children's money tins.

GrandTheftWalrus · 25/08/2018 14:02

About £3 in a jar

fixingabrokenhesrt · 25/08/2018 14:02

I keep 2 months wages in cash

HildaZelda · 25/08/2018 14:12

About £200 in the house and around £20 in the car. The house one is more of an 'emergency plumber' type thing. The car is in case I ever went out without my purse. Happened me once when I put petrol in the car.

irunlikeahipoo · 25/08/2018 14:23

Yes both DH and I keep money in two separate safes 😂

I have around 10k in mine and DH has about 5k. We also have large amounts of savings seperate to this

I’ve encouraged my kids to save and keep a min of 1k stashed for just in case
I like having it it’s my fuck everything fund I do realise that I am very lucky to have large amounts of savings in this day and age though

Catsandbootsandbootsandcats · 25/08/2018 14:39

I have a jar that has to be smashed with some money in it - holiday savings, but in an emergency I'd smash it. Not sure what's in there as I chuck the odd pound in if I can spare it. Maybe £50?

Also have a cup with 50s, 20s and 10s in for the kids to take if they need change for school/clubs. There's probably a few quid there.

And a jar for the 5s, 2s & 1 pennies.

So rich!
