To ask if you keep cash at home for emergencies?

By emergencies I mean things like

  • mass credit card failure
  • power cuts
  • banking systems going down

I don't routinely keep cash at home but considering it to mitigate for issues out of my hands. AIBU to ask if you keep emergency cash and how much?

We keep a month's worth of expenses on hand in cash in case of another bank IT failure tying things up, so several thousand hidden in the house.

Ingalia · 25/08/2018 08:25

I like to keep a bit at home - £100ish - but more so I don't have to rush to the cashpoint than because of the possibility of a national disaster. I also hoard fivers because they're useful. There might be another £50 or more in the kids' money boxes.

bellinisurge · 25/08/2018 08:26

I keep cash in a pill holder on my key chain. Needed it for an emergency yesterday.

DunesOfSand · 25/08/2018 08:34

Yes, because we live in a country where the ATMs do randomly stop working for a few days.
Didn't in the UK.
Also have a selection of foreign currencies, plus some sterling.
And a £1coin to get a trolley at the Airport!

ChairinSage · 25/08/2018 08:37

I keep between £50 and £100 in the house, enough for some fuel and some food in case of bank failure. My card got stopped as it was suspected of fraud many years ago and it was a nightmare! (I'd actually moved house and despite changing my address, it was flagged...). Having said that, the pot is currently empty as it was used a holiday spending money.

longwayoff · 25/08/2018 08:43

Zombie apocalypse type thing. Some years ago there was a situation in a mid East country, civil war broke out and currency worthless overnight. I heard on radio someone who had managed to leave describing how he had done so "I am a wealthy man but my money was worthless. I found someone to fly us out but he would only take payment in gold. Fortunately I had bought my wife a lot of expensive jewellery and he took all of it".

Frosty6611 · 25/08/2018 08:50

I have about £40 in £2 coins in a jar which would be enough for a taxi there and back from the local hospital and some food from the shop by my house

CherryPavlova · 25/08/2018 09:00

I think we’d be able to find about £250 - £300 in various places around the house and £2000in a safe not for touching by children for ‘top ups’. We keep a little in foreign currency too ( not Euro).

sadeyedladyofthelowlands63 · 25/08/2018 09:01

I keep £20 in the kitchen drawer for emergency taxis, but that's it.

Slartybartfast · 25/08/2018 09:04

i have a couple of months in my purse, i am therefore rich.

Pandamodium · 25/08/2018 09:05

£30 for emergency taxi.

My gran is a stasher doesnt trust banks drives me mad. She has dementia now and hides it all over.

My DH went to feed the dog yesterday and found notes in the dog food bag. Best was when we found out why the video player wasn't working.

Slartybartfast · 25/08/2018 09:05

pounds in my purse

didyouseetheflaresinthesky · 25/08/2018 09:07

I have an emergency 20 in case of a dash to A&E in a cab but that's it.

TroysMammy · 25/08/2018 09:09

Slartybartfast I took that as a typo for moths Grin

Pissedoffdotcom · 25/08/2018 09:12

Only what's in my purse/dps wallet. I used to keep a jar that had about £100 a time in it but dp got burgled once & they robbed all his cash. Now he doesn't like keeping too much in the house just in case

RedDwarves · 25/08/2018 09:13

I take a $100 note out every time I get paid. This isn't for any reason other than the fact that I don't use cash and don't want to break a $100 note, so it's an easy method of saving.

TeaByTheSeaside · 25/08/2018 09:42

I like to have about £50 in my purse - just in case.

But you're all making me think I should also have some stashed in the house.

So I think I'll sort that out.

Now ... where to hide it ..?

SleepyMcEdie · 25/08/2018 09:44

A few coins down the back of the sofa. I also don’t have any bottled water. I’m clearly doomed.

Slartybartfast · 25/08/2018 09:51

Grin @troysmum

fairly accurate as it happens

AfterSchoolWorry · 25/08/2018 09:56

No. We don't have any extra money.

If a zombie apocalypse came we'd be the first to die.

AfterSchoolWorry · 25/08/2018 09:57

I'm boggling at someone having a casual 5 grand in the safe and €500 in a jar in the kitchen 😲

LakieLady · 25/08/2018 10:01

I have £100 in cash hidden in case of a banking system failure, about £10 in change in a purse in the car, a £5 note in my purse for emergencies and two jars full of loose change that I've gathered around the house over the years.

I'm also probably one of the last people in the UK to have a chequebook (2 actually, one for the joint a/c and one for own a/c), so could always pay by cheque, if any shops still accept them.

We don't have any bottled water, but the tank in the motorhome is full if the water supply goes down!

Namechange8471 · 25/08/2018 10:02

We've got £500 stashed in an envelope upstairs

Isentthesignal · 25/08/2018 10:06

I keep £200 for forgetting to go to the cash machine emergencies. I keep a card in the car and some change for parking. I keep £10 in the dog’s poo bag pouch and £20 in the pocket of my winter coat - I make use of these stashed frequently enough to feel they are necessary.

NaomiNagata · 25/08/2018 10:07

@AfterSchoolWorry

I blame my parents; they did the same.
