To ask if you keep cash at home for emergencies?

Lookatmemeow · 24/08/2018 22:26

By emergencies I mean things like

  • mass credit card failure
  • power cuts
  • banking systems going down

I don't routinely keep cash at home but considering it to mitigate for issues out of my hands. AIBU to ask if you keep emergency cash and how much?

I am stockpiling cash at home for the post Brexit zombie apocalypse. along with shotgun cartridges, tinned food, bottled water and packets of percy pigs

avocadosrus · 24/08/2018 23:37

What is this thing you call "spare money"???

Gotthetshirt23 · 24/08/2018 23:43

Bear in mind £5000 would not be covered on home insurance should safe get taken in a burglary ......
There is usually a cash limit

RibbonAurora · 24/08/2018 23:53

RedneckStumpy - yeah, but you're actually John Wick aren't you? Grin

We do have a similar emergency kit to yours in the garage along with water and survival rations, but it's more in case of Earthquakes where we are. We keep about $300 on hand for if power cuts affect card payments and also have a couple of $20s in the vehicles in case we forget or lose card wallets and run low on gas.

Our plan for come the day of the revolution is to head for the hills where DH's family lives but, like I told DH, since that's like 650 miles away we're gonna be screwed if we can't get gas en route because it's a long way to walk!

stillnotTheDoctor · 24/08/2018 23:55

John Wick 😂😂

SenecaFalls · 24/08/2018 23:58

Yes. I live in Florida. We always keep some cash on hand as part of hurricane preparedness.

Muddlingalongalone · 24/08/2018 23:59

Not gonna last long but the children's money boxes are my usual go to. I try to have an emergency £20 in my phone case.

Heartbrokengirl14 · 25/08/2018 00:04

My parents do! They have between 500-1000 pounds in the house. They keep it in a few places, they keep it in case of emergencies or they need cash for something quick.

SingingMyOwnSpecialSong · 25/08/2018 00:06

I was at home when the window cleaner came last time, so raided my DD’s piggy bank. Does that count?

CrossFlannelCherry · 25/08/2018 00:07

I have 1k in cash that doesn't get touched, and about £200 that I dip into. The other week I decided to move the 1k to a different hiding place, and then couldn't remember where I'd put it!

MervynBunter · 25/08/2018 00:09

We have £20 in change in a piggy bank, but it's more for parking money than the zombie apocalypse.

diamantegal · 25/08/2018 00:16

Not deliberately, but my laziness at banking all the school fair shrapnel means there's generally about £500 lying around.

Just hoping any emergency can be funded purely from silver coins...

digging4victory · 25/08/2018 00:17

A few years ago my bank cancelled my card, and all other cards in my name because they suspected some sort of internet fraud. I couldn't buy anything or get cash until new cards came through. Since then I have always kept £100 cash in the house.

Whisky2014 · 25/08/2018 00:23

Nada. If thered a banking system failure and mass power cut no shops will be selling anything!.
But i must get into the routine if having some cash in the house to pay for the village bonus ball game and such like.

Bumply · 25/08/2018 00:24

I've got maybe £200 worth in foreign currency that I've not exchanged back after my holiday. But that's laziness rather than emergency forward planning

Saidthesharktotheflyingfish · 25/08/2018 00:24

No, and I cant see the point either. What use is cash in a power cut unless you are going to burn your stash of money? If the banking systems went down, shops would stop taking your money. They wouldnt want stacks of cash on site. If the credit card system crashes, then I'm sure we can manage without them for a while, there's food in the fridge and the cupboards..

Those of us who lived through the 70s tend to be a bit more sanguine about these kind of things I think...

abitoflight · 25/08/2018 00:38

Yup - for the emergency of DC getting stuck and needing a cab home with no money - so £60 in secret drawer it's been there for 4 years

RedneckStumpy · 25/08/2018 01:29

You never know what may happen!!

Happyhippy45 · 25/08/2018 01:39

I'm not telling you. You might come and rob me of my £4.50

fattyboomboomboom · 25/08/2018 01:50

I used to have an Anderson shelter in my garden, was I foolish to get rid? I plan to live off my fig tree crop and drink toilet water. And I have 2 Jack Russells who are combat ready.

EBearhug · 25/08/2018 01:51

I've always had an emergency tenner since I was at uni, except these day, it's an emergency 60 quid, though I still refer to it as the emergency tenner.

I've got about another 50 or 60 in my yoga bag, because I need to pay the next couple of months of class fees at the next class. Another £5 or so in coins for the locker in my swimming bag. About USD75 and about EUR35. There's about £20 in assorted coins for car parks and Severn Bridge tolls in the car, and about £12 in my desk at work for leaving collections (or emergency lunch or afternoon chocolate...)

fattyboomboomboom · 25/08/2018 01:53

I am prepared to offer sexual favours too should I run out of tinned goods.

gettingtherequickly · 25/08/2018 07:59

Nothing at all, I've just checked my purse and I've got a trolley pound, that's it.

MasonJar · 25/08/2018 08:14

Only £20 that I hid in a safe place a few years ago.
It wouldn't be any use in an emergency though as I've forgotten where I put it.

TroysMammy · 25/08/2018 08:19

I save £2 coins as my next year gardening fund, unsure of amount as it's in one of those tins you need a tin opener to get at it. I've got about £15 in a piggy bank from cards I've sold which is my crafting fund.

I've got enough food to keep me going for a few weeks.
