Tom Daley to be new face of Pampers

Women have never been good enough to be the face of a brand. But in a brave and stunning move for equality , Pampers have picked Daley and Black as perfect brand ambassadors

OP posts:
RibbityNoo · 23/08/2018 18:03

So I can only conclude it's woke virtue signalling. And when big companies are going in for woke virtue signalling, I worry

Haha! OP is so accustomed to "woke" being used as an insult on the FWR board they have forgotten its actually a positive thing to be aware of shifts in society and culture that denote a reduction in prejudice towards minority groups.

What's the OP calls virtue signalling is actually a brand catching up belatedly with the fact that gay parenting is mainstream accepted. Most people think that's a good thing for a society striving towards equality. Attempting to dismiss it as "woke virtue signalling" or smear the people involved with allusions to exploitation of "poor women" is nothing but a cloak for their own prejudice.

It's certainly interesting the majority of the responses this thread is getting with it being out on the main boards and not in the FWR boards!
Good to see most people think OP is being U.

P3onyPenny · 23/08/2018 18:17

I've reported it again. They've deleted one post so are clearly aware of the thread. More than a little disappointed with MN.

OrchidInTheSun · 23/08/2018 18:41

Shame they're not really listening to you then isn't it? Because I haven't said anything homophobic. I'm dubious about a couple who have used a commercial surrogate being held up and parenting ideals.

And oh the jumping about being outside the feminism boards. Oh dear.

OP posts:
NerrSnerr · 23/08/2018 18:44

If the whole thread is about commercial surrogacy then why is that not in the OP? You were on about woman not being good enough to be brand ambassadors. Would it be ok if a woman who used a surrogate was a pampers brand ambassador?

rainbowsandsmiles · 23/08/2018 19:01

Because I haven't said anything homophobic.

You do seem to have a problem with the mother not being in the picture though and women being surrogates in general.
Where does that leave gay couples wanting a baby? Genuine question.

P3onyPenny · 23/08/2018 19:02

Yes you have, you said half the population is homophobic and gay male dads shouldn't be represented in nappy ads.

P3onyPenny · 23/08/2018 19:04

As if homophobia meant it was ok for said couples not to be represented.

It's the same as saying racism means ethnic minorities shouldn't be in ads.

RibbityNoo · 23/08/2018 19:07

FYI OP, mnhq apply their talk guidelines to reported individual posts, as opposed to assessing the prejudice level of the content or the poster. Just because they don't delete your post does not mean you are off the hook for being homophobic.

Keep digging though.

AgentJohnson · 23/08/2018 19:20

Nice pivot OP but make your mind up about what you’re exactly enraged about. Who cares if your initial post was bullcrap because it was an obvious cover for your real objection, a gay couple supposedly encroaching on our female nappy changing territory. WTAF!

SillySallySingsSongs · 23/08/2018 19:21

So what are your 'parenting ideals' then? Do you have the same venom towards other 'non traditional' families?

The 1900s have called and want their views back.

Dad28 · 23/08/2018 19:24

To be honest it doesn’t really bother me, maybe a little bit because I can’t help but feel when ever decisions are made like this it’s because it assumed we (society) do have a problem with something (in this case gay parents) but all in all I buy pampers because my kids need to sht and pss not because it has a celebrity selling it.

Slarti · 23/08/2018 19:37

It's the same as saying racism means ethnic minorities shouldn't be in ads.

Yep. Imagine someone starting a thread complaining about a black couple in an ad, asking if white people weren't good enough to be chosen, suggesting white people should have been in the ad because they're the biggest demographic, and pointing out the racism of some white people as a reason black people shouldn't be in it! You're a disgrace OP.

rainbowsandsmiles · 23/08/2018 19:49

Nice pivot OP but make your mind up about what you’re exactly enraged about.

Exactly, I'm confused as to what the actual problem is now! Is it gay parents, the fact men are being shown doing the nappies, or what?
What actually is the AIBU?! Grin

Goldenbug · 23/08/2018 19:54

"Woke" is the new "Politically incorrect". It's what racists, sexists and homophobes use to put down people who don't want to be racist, sexist or homophobic.

SoupDragon · 23/08/2018 19:56

I have no idea what “woke” means.

greeneyedlulu · 23/08/2018 20:02

Well he's young enough to wear them still

TacoLover · 23/08/2018 20:03

This thread is so unnecessary. It's already been established that there have been several female ambassadors before him so what is the problem exactly? You say that it is mostly women who buy nappies, does that mean that every ambassador must be female? Wouldn't it be better to encourage more men to be buying nappies? And your idea that straight men are against gay men? Get your head out of your arse. You think almost half the population are deeply homophobic and are against a man on a nappy advert? Is it possible to be this stupid??

rainbowsandsmiles · 23/08/2018 20:03

Woke" is the new "Politically incorrect"

Doesn't woke mean the opposite of politically incorrect? As in if you're woke it means you're a right on dood or doodess?!
Disclaimer - I'm not down wiv da kidz. I could be way off the mark and talking bollox. Grin

TacoLover · 23/08/2018 20:04

And if having a gay man in an advert is virtue signalling then is a black woman in an advert virtue signalling? A disabled person? A lesbian? Didn't think soHmm

rainbowsandsmiles · 23/08/2018 20:06

You say that it is mostly women who buy nappies, does that mean that every ambassador must be female? Wouldn't it be better to encourage more men to be buying nappies?

Exactly, isn't it a good thing if it shows men buying nappies? I think so anyway. Men do buy nappies. So showing them with nappies is a good thing....

Goldenbug · 23/08/2018 20:18

Doesn't woke mean the opposite of politically incorrect? Yup. I got it round the wrong way and made a tit of myself. Oh well! Blush

rainbowsandsmiles · 23/08/2018 20:25

Yup. I got it round the wrong way and made a tit of myself. Oh well!

Grin Stupid word anyway lol, seems to me to be a put down for anyone thinking gay or trans is an OK thing to be!
HebeMumsnet · 23/08/2018 21:29

Evening, everyone. Just popping by to make clear that we're happy to host a discussion on men being used as 'the face' of a nappy advert, but we will delete any posts that seem to be homophobic. Please do hit the report button on any posts you see that worry you in that respect. We are always happy to have a look. As long as the debate remains civil and inclusive, we'd like to keep the thread going.

We're just pleased to see some blokes merrily changing a nappy without anyone forcing a medal upon them for their trouble, really... Maybe Tom's got enough medals in his hall cabinet already?

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 23/08/2018 21:32

Does tom have a hall cabinet?

Im slightly concerned that hebemumsnet knows a bit too much about the layout of tom daleys house
