Gender neutral/disabled toilets

I was at a venue which had a sign up for male and female loos with another sign pointing to gender neutral and disabled loos. I went to use the disabled loo and realised that there wasn’t a gender neutral toilet at all, it was a shared gender neutral/disabled toilet.

Is this normal? I’m a bit baffled by it - there’s only one toilet and quite often it’s literally the only one the disabled person can access. Or they urgently need to get to a toilet.

I’m going to write a review of the venue’s accessibility (which promises to be great on its website then isn’t) and I’m not sure if this is totally normal and I’m just being OTT expecting disabled loos to be for disabled people?

Giles I think I've seen similar figures, but weren't they all either murdered in domestic incidents or whilst working in the sex industry?

I think the problem sometimes arises when they are classed as accessible rather than disabled. When our large local shopping opened it came with fabulous toilets, male and female cubicles, couple of double cubicles with two toilets, great for when you have young children with you, three huge changing areas, three baby feeding rooms and a number of accessible toilets. The problem is that despite providing baby changing areas, and double cubicles, you can't fit a pram through any of the doors. I asked at customer service which toilet you were meant to use if you had a baby in a pram and was told specifically that we should use the accessible toilet as they were designed with wider doors. I queried it but they said that was always the intention when they designed the toilets. 🤷‍♀️

sirzy it’s about transgender

chchchnamechanges · 20/08/2018 21:02

I don’t think disabled toilets/changing areas should be shared with anyone.

They should be for disabled people alone - particularly given there are so few of them in the first place.

From looking at this venue there were 3 for a capacity of more than 2,5k from what I could see. If the minimum required is more than this I’d assume they met it and no more.

Ain’t I was replying to those who say “well they are already gender neutral so it doesn’t make a difference” but they have to be neutral to meet the needs of the group they are afeually designed for. Not to be opened up to everyone and anyone.

Maddy70 · 20/08/2018 21:04

I don't see the issue. Disabled toilets are just those that have been modified for use for disabled people. Anyone can use them, gender neutral or otherwise

auntethel · 20/08/2018 21:05

And I would think most of the abuses, danger comes from men so I'm sure transpeople will be safe in the ladies?

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 20/08/2018 21:05

Sirzy point taken 😉

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 20/08/2018 21:07

Surely the point is that disabled toilets are for the disabled!!

Sweetsongbird1 · 20/08/2018 21:08

No but they can fight for their own fucking facilities instead of commandeering the hard fought for disabled facilities!

We are!!!! Where have you been?? Have you not heard anything about the GR act??

Sweetsongbird1 · 20/08/2018 21:11

Why would women start using the gender neutral disabled toilet? I thought women were scared stuff of gender neutral toilets

Because the normal ladies toilets are being taken away and GN stalls are bring out in, not individual toilets that’s are sealed off like usual disabled toilets.

chchchnamechanges · 20/08/2018 21:12

No, they’re not. They’re for use by people who have disabilities. Not for use by “anyone”.

I feel very strongly that toilet facilities for people with disabilities should not have a post it note stuck on the side saying ‘transgender’ It’s offensiv on many levels

Yes also to women too

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 20/08/2018 21:14

Are we really discussing disabled facilities vs transgender facilities?
I’m all for human rights, but we can’t take away from one group that has fought long and hard for recognition, acceptance and understanding to make way for another

Sweetsongbird1 · 20/08/2018 21:15

What about the ladies safe from trans women? Have you seen the figures? Women are still at risk.

CandleWithHair · 20/08/2018 21:16

A very close friend of mine has been forced to use the men’s toilets or get thrown out of stores because she’s butch. Literally had women screaming for help because she was in the women’s toilets. More places need gender neutral loos and FFS it’s not just about trans. But these shouldn’t be at the expense of disabled facilities.

BeyondRadicalisationPortal · 20/08/2018 21:17

Disabled toilets - unisex = people of either sex can use if they are disabled
Female toilets = female sex. Any gender, so long as female-bodied
Male toilets vis versa.

Enough people take the piss (pun intended) with disabled toilets anyway, without sticking a sign on the outside saying anyone can use them.

Side note, but when did everyone stop saying "unisex" and replace it with "gender neutral"?

auntethel · 20/08/2018 21:18

Live and let live, let transpose use the ladies.

auntethel · 20/08/2018 21:19

Sorry, transpeople.

Gileswithachainsaw · 20/08/2018 21:19

No they can use the toilet that corresponds to their sex.

lljkk · 20/08/2018 21:20

I'll rustle up some guilt about using the disabled access loo (when all others full) the day I find anyone disabled waiting outside it. Hasn't happened in 50 years, but I guess has to happen sometime. Probably sometime after I turn disabled myself.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 20/08/2018 21:20

Bloody hell! It’s not about risk, safety, trans, pc etc etc

DISABLED TOILETS ARE FOR THE DISABLED.

BeyondRadicalisationPortal · 20/08/2018 21:22

And anyway, surely anyone that disagrees toilets are separated by sex (and thinks it is by gender) would think that people should use the toilets they identify with? That still doesn't result in people using the disabled facilities, so who the hell came up with this stupid idea?

chchchnamechanges · 20/08/2018 21:23

Probably sometime after I turn disabled myself.

You don’t “turn disabled”.

What an offensive choice of words.

How would you know if the person waiting is disabled? I’m glad to see a lot more signs with “not every disability is visible one them”.
