I always think if you post mocking a poster about their spelling and grammar you want to be sure all your posts are perfect...

It's funny how often Muphry's Law is observed in Pedants' Corner posts.Grin

RoseWhiteTips · 20/08/2018 10:33

Admonishing other posters is so immature.

RoseWhiteTips · 20/08/2018 10:35

...to proofread...

RoseWhiteTips · 20/08/2018 10:35

And...

RoseWhiteTips · 20/08/2018 10:36

That old autocorrect nuisance is to blame. Natch.😂

jellycat1 · 20/08/2018 10:40

I genuinely do not mind being corrected if the person correcting me is correct!

JacquesHammer · 20/08/2018 10:41

Oh Rosie

There's no need to add the word "read" to "proof" - "proofing" simply means checking the face of the text, not the content - if I'd wanted it and it was necessary I would have used it.

However you're struggling on occasion with the possessive apostrophe - do you need a hand? I mean you've suggested on other threads that when you correct someone it is kind and helpful.

RoseWhiteTips · 20/08/2018 10:43

I do not struggle with any apostrophe, Jackie!

RoseWhiteTips · 20/08/2018 10:43

Next?

RoseWhiteTips · 20/08/2018 10:44

Are you a prooferperson, Jax?!

RoseWhiteTips · 20/08/2018 10:44

I imagine you read English Lit at one of the Ancients. Do confirm! Lol

GoatWithACoat · 20/08/2018 10:45

The thing is with this ‘test’ is that people were being ASKED to e-mails with mistakes in them. If I was asked to as part of a test I would have done so.

Have never done it in real life though. Even if I’ve noticed the mistakes. It’s a stupid test.

JacquesHammer · 20/08/2018 10:45

I do not struggle with any apostrophe, Jackie!

Go read some of your posts...you really do.

I proof as part of my business.

RoseWhiteTips · 20/08/2018 10:46

Think you might be having problems with parenthesis in your previous post...

RoseWhiteTips · 20/08/2018 10:46

Nope.

RoseWhiteTips · 20/08/2018 10:47

What is your “business”? Are you an academic? I know quite a few. Actually, I’m married to one!😂

RoseWhiteTips · 20/08/2018 10:48

Degree or not? Professional - or not?

tearsinheaven · 20/08/2018 10:50

RoseWhiteTips, please stop now. I am embarrassed for you.

Vinylsamso · 20/08/2018 10:51

When you comment on a thread and someone comes on and corrects your grammar seems such a waste of time.

Most people already know the “correct” way. They’re not going to read it and say “wow, I never knew your/their etc. had different ways to be spelt”. They’re probably like me and would go for the speed option of typing fast... because they genuinely DONT CARE what you think about their spelling.

That’s what bothers me, the idea that some old bat is sitting at home feeling super intelligent because she knows basic English when the poster probably does too. It’s just not their priority. If you can read it, job done.

So it doesn’t make me feel thick but it makes me imagine you as a total bore who would be a drag to know.

No one super intelligent would waste their time arguing with strangers on MN, of that I’m sure.

RoseWhiteTips · 20/08/2018 10:51

Helpful corrections:

- if I'd wanted it, and it was necessary, I would have used it.

However you're struggling, on occasion, with the possessive apostrophe -

jellycat1 · 20/08/2018 10:53

@MrsST I'd have done the same! Cumming?! It's even bloody longer than coming!

RoseWhiteTips · 20/08/2018 10:54

Riiight. Back to TES.
