To clarify: the short one about pomposity.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 20/08/2018 17:39

On that we are agreed, ProfessorMoody. Perhaps we're talking of different platforms because in your first example, FB bigots, I wouldn't trouble to defend them, I wouldn't even be reading them as I don't post there.

Mumsnet is different and you've said that yourself so it seems like we're violently agreeing (almost). Threads like this are also (imo) fair game to comment on SPaG on as most of the posters posting invite comments freely. There's only one or two posters on this thread who've popped on to complain and in fairness to everybody, they've been left alone.

So, ProfMoody, I'm sorry that I was rude to you. We're talking about different areas and about posters on Mumsnet, we're aligned.

However, nakedscientist you're starting to get on my nerves. I'm not defending OP or any poster being called up on their SPaG for bullying, and it's posters like you who use that word unnecessarily. I don't want to keep engaging with you on this because you'll just keep accusing me of it whilst maintaining that 'this is a chatboard and therefore... yada yada', for yourself. No, it doesn't work like that.

I have more respect for ProfessorMoody in challenging what I said so let's leave it there please.

People who cannot spell, or who use bad grammar, but don't know any better, get all defensive when corrected, as they rightly think that they come across as a bit thick.

ProfessorMoody · 20/08/2018 17:56

No problem, Lying :)

RoseWhiteTips · 20/08/2018 18:02

It is possible to acquaint yourself with grammar. No excuses required. No defensiveness necessary.

auntethel · 20/08/2018 19:14

......as they rightly think that they come across a bit thick. That's just your stigmatising opinion. To me, they come across as people who have been let down by our education system or/and have difficulty in getting to grips with it.

auntethel · 20/08/2018 19:21

It is possible to acquaint yourself with grammar. Glad you find it that easy, not everyone does. Aren't you clever?Halo

RoseWhiteTips · 20/08/2018 19:29

Thanks!

I've only ever been tempted to correct anyone online twice - first was after that person had corrected someone else - and made a mistake in his own post. Talk about pots and kettles.

Second was during a forum discussion about teaching English abroad, after some twat said he couldn't see that SPAG were important, his own weren't up to much but he was going to go and teach abroad anyway, after doing some rubbish online-only TEFL course.

As an ex TEFL teacher abroad I was incensed to think of him teaching students who'd be paying good money for lessons, and would probably be taking exams where incorrect SPAG could lose them crucial marks. I don't mind admitting that I had a go at that twat, who didn't even know the difference between its and it's.

Poloshot and you can rightly think you come across as nasty and unpleasant.

user1485342611 · 20/08/2018 21:45

Tonight I saw someone joining in at sneering about someone's grammatical error on one thread, and then writing a post with several very obvious errors on another thread.

user1485342611 · 20/08/2018 21:48

Oh, see someone has pulled her upon it.

nakedscientist · 21/08/2018 00:46

I am maintaining that one can make a point without being rude, something that you seem to be struggling with.

Also, lyin you can try to tell posters what to think, post, or do, but short of saying "I'll report you" there's not much you can really do is there? Reasoned argument is the way forward, if respect is what you're after.
