as soon as someone correct mine I feel so small.
I know my spelling is crap and I am also rubbish at sentencing.
my vocab is something that I find real shaming.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 19/08/2018 13:13

Well I understand your post perfectly, katenandme. If others don't or won't then it's their comprehension at fault and/or lack of manners; nothing whatsoever to do with you.

pointythings · 19/08/2018 13:13

I wouldn't correct poor spelling and grammar on this or any other forum, but I would judge a person if said poor spelling and grammar were also associated with racist/sexist/homophobic views. I'd keep it inside my head though and challenge the content posted rather than its form.

Out there in the real world, spelling and grammar matters a lot. We have recently gone through a recruitment process in our team and unless an applicant has declared dyslexia, a poorly spelled application will go to the bottom of the pile. (Our team manager is dyslexic, so honesty does pay off).

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 19/08/2018 13:21

I agree, pointythings this matters very much in RL.

There's ways and means here though - if posters are interested, the Pedants' Corner is an informative and non-judgemental place to post. I think more posters should post there and I should too. I'll remember that for when a related question next pops into my head.

Faez · 19/08/2018 14:08

It's just one of them things

TerfsUp · 19/08/2018 16:04

Don't you mean "its", Faez?

Metoodear · 19/08/2018 17:44

Shame Cosmo didn't bother to proofread the article Grin

Stuff that is 'published' needs to be correct. Then there's no opportunity for misunderstanding, Casual chat doesn't matter so much... the trouble is that forums and personal ads fall somewhere in the middle.

Tistheseason17 · 19/08/2018 19:09

"Would of" - Nooooooo. It's "would have".
I have no idea why it bothers me so much!

BlackberryandNettle · 19/08/2018 19:51

So I looked at the article. They asked people to assess an email, apparently introverts picked up on more errors. They've then bizarrely decided that 'less agreeable people' (ie they reckon introverts are less agreeable) 'point out' errors (actually they didn't point it out to the author, just judged a theoretical sample email because they were asked to). They could equally have decided that 'more agreeable people' 'listen better to instructions'.

mammmamia · 19/08/2018 22:11

tistheseason you’re right to be annoyed by “would of”.
I hope schools are picking up on this and teaching kids to get it right before it seeps into accepted use Angry

user1485342611 · 19/08/2018 22:25

The article is absolutely ridiculous. They offer no explanation whatsoever as to why people who notice grammatical and spelling errors are 'less agreeable', and seem to be trying to make a connection between 'introverted' and 'less agreeable', on no basis whatsoever.

That being said, people who come onto threads and offer unsolicited advice on grammar and spelling are rude and annoying. I usually just assume they're rather ignorant people, who know no better, and think their behaviour is acceptable.

Tistheseason17 · 19/08/2018 22:58

@mammmamia
Glad to have company! Same with "They'd of" . Just terrible !

ShamelesslyPlacemarking · 19/08/2018 23:11

grabs popcorn and settles in for a long battle between descriptivists and prescriptivists

As a professional editor, I don't correct grammar and spelling unless I'm being paid to do so.

nakedscientist · 19/08/2018 23:24

Naked, it's spelt controversially! You did give me permission! 😉

Yep, banged to rights Blulady Grin

RoseWhiteTips · 19/08/2018 23:29

Grammer (sic)?!

Lollol

5foot5 · 19/08/2018 23:41

In general I think the grammar pedants just make themselves look silly and, where the writer is obviously distressed, it just comes across as plain nasty.

Obviously you notice, "should of" instead of "should have" sets my teeth on edge but I would never, ever point it out on a thread.

I must say though, if I open a thread and find the OP is a solid block of text with no paragraph breaks then I usually close it PDQ. Comment? No of course not. Read it? Nope.

nakedscientist · 19/08/2018 23:42

Sorry lyin I don't agree with you, I think you were bullying and rude to professor and I don't think it's your place to tell other people what their place is.

People will correct and I think so long as it's polite, that's fine. You were not polite, therefore not fine.

Lots of your other posts seem reasonable though. Not sure why you attacked professor like that.

JacquesHammer · 20/08/2018 07:52

I always think if you post mocking a poster about their spelling and grammar you want to be sure all your posts are perfect...

MrsST · 20/08/2018 08:05

I unfriended someone on Facebook because she insisted on typing the word "cum" instead of "come"
I didn't correct her. I just moved away. Made very interesting reading when reading about her "boyf is cumming home today"

Metoodear · 20/08/2018 08:12

MrsST

I think your friend was very lucky you backed away

RoseWhiteTips · 20/08/2018 10:12

Carefully placed commas are also vital - especially when you are attempting to admonish other posters.

RoseWhiteTips · 20/08/2018 10:21

Has anyone got a link to the OP’s other thread?

JacquesHammer · 20/08/2018 10:24

You might want to proof a couple of your recent posts on various threads...just being kind and helpful obviously.
