AIBU to get pissed off with all the Autumn and Winter "cosy" people

Now that the evenings are getting darker I feel sad that summer is ending .. and pissed off with the "cosy" people !! I hate winter .. what is "cosy" about bumbling about in the dark and scraping ice off your car, getting fat with stodgy food , seeing all the shit sentimental Christmas TV adverts and being pale , corpse like and with drizzled on hair !!! .. this is light hearted but I just don't get it ! .... I've stayed away from the " We hate summer" threads as instructed as they were not for me ... so now it's my turn !!

You romanticise the seasons speakout. They have little to do with reality.

Not at all.

Frost is beautiful, seeing that sugar like dusting that coats the garden and trees.

My youngest is 18, we are already planning our Halloween celebrations.

Most days I take a walk in the forest or at least my garden to watch the subtle changes that come with the seasons. Mist is so atmospheric, I love the scent and the stillness that comes with a misty morning and a watery sunrise.

We drink hot chocolate several time a week during the winter months, our local community have a big bonfire, no fireworks, we hire a fair organ, volunteers give out hot soup and mulled cider .

This IS my reality.

LoniceraJaponica · 22/08/2018 20:55

Not my reality speakout

Where I live Halloween is only a "thing" for the children. We live a bit out of the way, so get very few trick or treaters. DD had a Halloween party last year, but this year all her friends will be at university, so Halloween won't be happening at our house.

I really, really hate mist and low light levels. They really affect my mood. Having crap eyesight doesn't help either. I need good light to be able to see properly.

Alicatz66 · 22/08/2018 21:23

speakout are you related to Mary Poppins ?

speakout · 22/08/2018 21:28

Alicatz66 , no, but I have had a great deal of hardship in my life.

I feel that life is short, and now that I am in a stable and happy place at this point I want to savour as many small pleasures as I can.

MeyMary · 22/08/2018 21:35

I really love mist :)
Don't really mind the cold either.

The only issue is heating the top floor of our house.
Downstairs has two wood stoves and additional heaters. The 1rst floor is ok...

Upstairs - which has heaters...- tends to stay quite nippy. And the skylights were semi permanently frozen last winter. (Which actually looked quite nice. And DH is luckily a living furnace... But I still wore thermal underwear, old cross country socks and a beanie to bed.)

Delatron · 22/08/2018 21:38

I’d struggle to get excited about frost and apples to be honest!

MeyMary · 22/08/2018 21:50

@Delatron
Not just apples. Mulled cider and apple juice Brew

And beer battered apple rings with vanilla sauce. And fresh citrus fruits!! Going to an ice rink, trying to convince my DH to ski... And it's also family time (imo). Important birthdays (DB1, DM), so many seasonal festivities (although no Halloween for me), St. Nick, the Christmas festivities, new Years, meeting all my distant relatives.

Eating my mother's hot chocolate (it's super creamy)...

Finally getting to snuggle with my DH because we aren't sweat drenched monkies / actually appreciate additional warmth... More sex Wink.

Perfect jogging weather (before the ice at least).

That's the stuff I look forward to.

Delatron · 22/08/2018 21:58

Agree with the perfect jogging weather!

I guess I’m just not a hot chocolate person and beer battered apple rings do not appeal!!

Though I do think it’s great people find joy in these cold seasons. I just can’t get beyond the cold and dark. Halloween is crap. I do like Christmas and the build up but then that’s it and you still have Jan and Feb (and often March is coldest) to get through. It’s just too long!

Agree with what someone said upthread, only on mumsnet have I seen so many people who hate summer and love autum/winter.

Brambleboo · 22/08/2018 22:20

I'm with the, OP. I hate winter with a passion. Cold, damp and windy. It makes my arthritic joints ache even more than normal. The lovely, long light nights are replaced with almost endless darkness.

I need to emigrate, for sure.

MeyMary · 22/08/2018 22:31

@Delatron

But it's hot chocolate thick enough to eat with a spooon! ;) Never met someone that didn't like fried apple...Confused

I think that's sort of what I like about the season. It's sometimes super dark and dreary but we have things to light up the dark, warm fires, snuggly sweaters, friends, family.

And something it's super white, sparkly and everything looks a tad magical.

Also bells, horses with bells, snow, candle making with my goddaughter and nephews.. Sure, February is dreary. But winter sport! (Or jogging. Depending on the weather.) And then comes carnival, lent and Easter... And it's spring again :)

We used to fly kites in autumn as children. Which is still a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. (I really hope to share these things with the LO...)

MeyMary · 22/08/2018 22:32

I feel like every season has nice festivals, weather phenomenons and other things to appreciate :)

MeyMary · 22/08/2018 22:35

Halloween is crap

DH didn't get to celebrate it when he was little. (Not Christian enough. I always thought Halloween was big in the UK, tbh...Confused)

I just go to church and the graveyard. And have dinner with my family :)

MeyMary · 22/08/2018 22:36

And I'm clearly bored / over invested in this thread. I want to go back to work...Sad

SoupDragon · 22/08/2018 22:41

Grey drizzle, short dull days. Hateful 9 months.

speakout · 22/08/2018 22:43

MeyMary Halloween is big in my part of the UK, always has been.

speakout · 22/08/2018 22:44

I think life is to short and precious to find 75% of the year "hateful".

SoupDragon · 22/08/2018 22:46

Bully for you.

GothMummy · 22/08/2018 22:47

I actually love all the seasons and appreciate each turn of the year's wheel.....but I really struggle with any extreme of weather because of the horses, if we have lots of snow or rain or heat, all of it makes keeping horses incredibly hard work.

speakout · 22/08/2018 22:48

SoupDragon but how can you tolerate that?

Life must be miserable to hate three quarters of the year.

If I felt like that I would make moves to another country where I could enjoy the climate all year round.

MeyMary · 22/08/2018 22:54

Hateful 9 months.

9 months?! That's too long imo Shock I actually agree.

Delatron · 22/08/2018 22:58

I think if we hadn’t had this glorious summer this year I would have thought about emigrating. When summer is a wash out and your heating is on in August then it makes the autumn and winter even harder and it just goes on and on. I do think I’ll leave at some point. I just love the heat.

LoniceraJaponica · 22/08/2018 23:50

MeyMary there are only 3 of us. The rest of our very small family are very scattered so we don't have those cosy family get togethers you eulogise about. Christmas is very low key (too low key for me) as no-one wants to travel to see us at Christmas and none of our families have room for us to stay.

I would really like to escape the UK for Christmas and spend it in warmer climes.

itsbetterthanabox · 23/08/2018 00:03

Ive not enjoyed the heat but I hate the cold too.
Autumn is nice. Up until Xmas I like but jan-March are horrible. Too bitterly cold.
I wish it were always October.

itsbetterthanabox · 23/08/2018 00:04

Op do you not get too overheated? Do you find you are able to sleep well in the very hot?

MeyMary · 23/08/2018 00:09

@LoniceraJaponica

Why not spend Christmas abroad? (If your finances allow it?) Sounds like you'd be happier somewhere a little warmer...

That's the blessing (and occasionally also curse*) of a big family, I suppose :)

*Some are not that cosy. But at least it's an occasion to gossip, be snarky with the people I do like...Wink
