Scalded for drinking alcohol by a stranger

Went to Wetherspoons (I'm still there) with DP. I'm 28 weeks pregnant at the moment and had half a pint of cider with my meal. The woman who served it to me had no issue with it whatsoever, but the man stood next to me (not sure if he was slightly drunk) felt it appropriate to tell my DP that 'that won't be good for her or the baby' (hello I'm stood right here Hmm). DP told him, 'it's fine' and told me to ignore him and the bloke then continued to discuss under his breath with his partner/friend my choice to have a drink.

AIBU to think he had no right? To think that it's fine that I had half a pint once in a blue moon? To feel pissed off with the constant judgement of my ever move since I've been pregnant?

Ugh. I've just had enough of today! Sorry for moaning...

Firstly I understand both sides of the argument about the consumption of half a cider whilst being pregnant. I chose not to drink at all when pregnant and would probably choose not to again as there are now so many alcohol free alternatives that are just as tasty (apart from wine, alcohol free wine is crap and I did miss a nice glass of red). It is however up to each individual to read the research and decide for themselves.

Secondly, all of the people getting personal need to grow up and learn how to have a sensible debate without judging and name calling.

Thirdly, regardless of you're own personal opinions nobody has the right to speak to a pregnant person the way the man did and the fact that he spoke to op's DH and not her directly suggests what a controlling person he likely is. There is something about being pregnant that leads people to believe you are public property to be judged and commented on by everybody.

Fourthly, everyone condemning op for drinking alcohol, please stop trying to pretend it's because you care about her unborn child, you just want to be right and feel superior by putting her down.

My god are you still awake??? You pregnant people need to know your place. Get to sleep now. On your left side Hmm and set alarms incase you move into your back. And that wasn’t a cue for sex!!!!

And keep off those pints of cider 😂

Don't be sorry that I have to work. I've worked hard to get where I am despite crippling anxiety. I could stay at home supported by another human being but why would I want that when I'm independent and have built a career for myself. It's bloody tragic a teenager saying they don't have to work. There is a motto 'just because you can doesn't mean you should'

StepsRoadmum · 19/08/2018 23:14

@Scout1774 bravo, very well said Smile

SavanahXx · 19/08/2018 23:15

@apriljune12 hats off to your 19 year old, but that's not what i wanted to do, i invested some of my money into things i know sells on for a lot more money and I've hung onto them. I know I will be financially stable for a long time, so I don't see the problem with me knowing I don't want to work for minimum wage, to line someone else's pockets when I could be lining my own.

@karyatide kinda similar, homeless at 16, abusive home, but it shaped me into the person I am today, I cant wait to be a mum, all the sleepless nights, comforting my baby when she's poorly, giving her a stable home, and protecting her, its not a bad thing to want to be a mum young. when I was looking after my brother and sister, that was from when they was baby's, id do night feeds, baths, changing bums, feeds in the day, taking them out to try and settle them, I just know its something I'm good at, something I generally enjoy doing.

This thread is just pure entertainment for me now. Comedy gold!

there are no both sides of the argument

Half a cider will not harm a foetus in any way whatsoever.

dontbesillyhenry · 19/08/2018 23:19

I think something has gone very wrong in life when a young kid states work isn't for them and the best option is having a kid. It's tragic if I'm being honest I would be heartbroken if my daughter thought that was the best she could get out of her life

SavanahXx · 19/08/2018 23:21

@dontbesillyhenry id rather be at home with my child, financially stable and being happy, instead of being in a job, I absolutely hate, taking time away from being with my child, for what? a bit of extra money, id personally rather not, but again, that's my choice.

apriljune12 · 19/08/2018 23:22

Well I wish you luck love I really do.

I also wish you the gift of humility tolerance and understanding so you can pass that on to your dd. Oh and kindness. All good traits to embrace and teach

SavanahXx · 19/08/2018 23:23

@dontbesillyhenry that's your opinion and your entitled to it, just shows that you'd rather your child be unhappy so that you approve. I'm happy with my life, and very comfortable, so I don't see the problem? it just seems that other people don't approve because they have to work? i could be wrong, but that's how it seems Confused

Still awake!!!! Grin

apriljune12 · 19/08/2018 23:26

Very few teenagers are financially set as you seem to be especially with the childhood you describe. Can I ask have you had a big compensation claim? Obviousiy don’t answer if it’s outing I just wondered as my dd did but not from the government from an insurance claim

toocool4cats · 19/08/2018 23:26

What on earth does it have to do with him anyway? The cheek of him!

dontbesillyhenry · 19/08/2018 23:27

Eh? Who's child is unhappy?
And financially stable? Right so this few grand you've got your hands on is going to keep you going how long exactly? You are a typical youngster. Know it all but hey another wise old saying got you...pride comes before a fall

If people are 'unhappy' with a job they find something they are happy in. That's being an adult. What if your baby's dad decides he's unhappy in his job and doesn't want to work anymore? Of if all of us do that and nobody pays tax anymore. It's just a very strange answer to not liking a job. I've hated some jobs but love my current one I'm glad I didn't just throw in the towel way back when

HarshingMyMellow · 19/08/2018 23:30

She's brought stuff that she knows sells well.... honestly, the mind boggles.

Boilin · 19/08/2018 23:31

@apriljune12 and I have to get up for work in the morning. Shock horror!

OP posts:
SavanahXx · 19/08/2018 23:31

@apriljune12 btw my "hats off" comment wasn't sarcasm either, your child is awesome to carry on working and going to uni when they could take the "easy option" I admire people like that, it just really isn't for me, I'm happier now, than I have ever been, doing jobs that I hated, and definitely being shown no respect while doing it, I also didn't have the interest in college, switched my subject, still wasn't interested (and that was doing things I thought I wanted to do) that wasn't for me, I was majorly unhappy,

I don't think people should be criticised for not working if they are financially stable, I don't claim benefits or anything so I don't see the problem

IhatetheArchers · 19/08/2018 23:31

You don't come across as happy. You come across as very anxious and socially isolated.

dontbesillyhenry · 19/08/2018 23:34

Harshing this time next year she'll be a millionaire..

HarshingMyMellow · 19/08/2018 23:36
