DH is being dim, isn't he? Financial

So we usually do our regular online shop at Sainsbury's, because this is one of the very few supermarkets that shock what DH likes for his dinners (very restrictive dietary needs).

Anyway, I've just noticed Morrison's sale the same thing for cheaper, it's on offer. Only about 30p difference, but we by several of these so it all adds up. Plus, their basics are cheaper.

DH is putting his foot down and saying no, he doesn't want to try Morrison's.

I've asked why and he says there's no point. I said we could save £5/10. He said I don't really care about saving a few quid Confused

Yeah, like we have money to just burn Hmm

So I asked again, and he said it's just too much faff to change.
I said but I've signed up instantly. He says no, I'm comfortable with Sainsbury's so leave it at that.

AIBU to think he's being bloody dim? Why wouldn't you save just a few quid? Why spend more money, even small amounts, when you don't have to?

He's adamant it's too much hassle. And says he isn't interested in saving a few quid. It's not worth it.

For context, either myself or him order the online shop. I was going to do it so it's not like he had to go out of his way to sign up or anything. I'd already done it.

In annoyance, he's agreed to add it all up and see if there's any difference at all. Sod's law it'll cost the same overall or be more expensive.

Not really sure why I'm writing this, perhaps I just need a rant Envy

He will most likely see the thread and get the hump. Hopefully it doesn't turn out that I'm U!

No idea why you even asked him.

BarbaraofSevillle · 18/08/2018 11:51

So do I Paddley but in person, not online. I pass nearly all supermarkets on the way home from work, with some minor routine changes, so just drop into whichever one I feel like.

Doing this and looking out for offers means that you can save loads compared with going to the same supermarket and buying the same things every week. But you do need a good choice of easily accessible supermarkets and the space and budget to keep a few extra bits in, so it might not be for everyone.

OP, have you checked if Iceland, Heron or Farm Foods do that Linda McCartney pulled chicken? They might be cheaper and that would really put the cat amongst his pigeons if he thinks Morrisons is too far a step down from Sainsburys Grin.

JennieLee · 18/08/2018 11:52

So it's some kind of vegetarian diet but one which is very high in processed foods - sweetened soya milk, processed veg, 'fake chicken'. It does sound like a kind of semi-alternative conservatism that is quite childish. ('I'll only eat Kelloggs cornflakes - the others taste yucky.' That sort of thing.) I suppose if money is abundant then choosing the more expensive supermarket doesn't matter. But I don't think Sainsburys is particularly good apart from it stocking a slightly larger range of deli/gourmet 'high-end' items. Probably a bit better in terms of actual shopping because of wide aisles and reasonable number of checkouts. But for online shopping the actual physical shop organisation is irrelevant.

HollyGibney · 18/08/2018 11:55

Hmm, I don't know really. I have a weekly on line delivery with Ocado and I would hate to change it. I get free delivery for a year which helps but I just like the quality and selection they offer. I used to shop with Tesco and it was fine and probably a few ££ cheaper but I just really like Ocado.

OliviaStabler · 18/08/2018 12:01

Just do the order and let him huff and puff after the van has delivered.

RandomMess · 18/08/2018 12:04

If you shop elsewhere for several weeks Sainsbury's will send you e-vouchers... we also have separate nectar cards and after not using mine a while they send us e vouchers and then we switch Grin

KnobJockey · 18/08/2018 12:06

@escapetothecuntree Try logging on to My Supermarket and put your normal Sainsbury's shop in there. It then shows you what that shop would cost at each supermarket- just make sure you look at the trolley before you select it as sometimes it selects alternatives.

Orangeblossom1976 · 18/08/2018 12:07

I have used Ocado recently and they have a thing where if it is cheaper elsewhere they will refund the difference. So that might be worth a go, if they have the stuff

Orangeblossom1976 · 18/08/2018 12:07

Ocado has a free year delivery offer and good intro offer as weak atm

Orangeblossom1976 · 18/08/2018 12:07

'as well'

escapetothecuntree · 18/08/2018 12:07

It was a struggle enough to get him to let me have some meat in the house . in fact, it's no longer spoken about. I just wasn't prepared to eat a veggie diet anymore and got bored of eating golden veg rice with Linda McCartney chicken, or dry meat free mince, every single night. He cooks and it's the only thing he cooks

I missed more hearty meals Blush spaghetti b, shepherds pie, lasagne, etc etc

Yeah he's being a dickhead.
Also, tinned carrots 🤢🤮

queenworkerbee · 18/08/2018 12:11

Hollygibney same! We love ocado (especially flash sales) wouldn't change them either. They are brilliant with their customer service, quality of food (and perks like free bottles of champagne!)

ChateauRouge · 18/08/2018 12:12

Another one reading this and only thinking "Tinned carrots!!???????!!!!"

I think this may need another thread...

TheWanderlust · 18/08/2018 12:13

Although not for restrictive eating reasons I had to drag OH round to the idea of using Tesco online kicking and screaming because he had always used Sainsbury's and that was that.

Until I did a monthly breakdown and showed him for the 2 of us I could save approx. £15 a week even by having a few luxuries / treats here and there.

He's now mega grateful as we have a baby on the way and need to save every penny we can so that I can take mat leave.

Oysterbabe · 18/08/2018 12:13

I pay 44p for 1kg of carrots at Tesco. A drained tin of their value carrots costs 20p and weighs 160g.

Bluesmartiesarebest · 18/08/2018 12:13

Does he have some sort of eating disorder? Dry veg mince sounds horrible

BarbaraofSevillle · 18/08/2018 12:17

I'm starting to wonder if there's more to this. He won't 'let you' have meat in the house?

Do you buy your own mince and make your own lasagne, cottage pie etc? Could he used quorn or other vegetarian mince to make these things that you both could eat?

Also, what do you mean by 'But I've tried explaining that if all his stuff comes to, say £30, I have £10 to play with for myself for lunches etc' ?

You're not saying that he spends £30 pw on his food and there's £10 left for you are you?

DarlingNikita · 18/08/2018 12:19

Slightly off topic but I just wasn't prepared to eat a veggie diet anymore and got bored of eating golden veg rice with Linda McCartney chicken, or dry meat free mince, every single night. He cooks and it's the only thing he cooks is fecking miserable.

I cook and eat a lot of meat-free meals although I'm not veggie, and you can do SO much better than this!

Why not cook some veggie things that you fancy? Experiment with Indian, Vietnamese, Persian recipes for example.

FaithEverPresent · 18/08/2018 12:21

I have dietary restrictions (gluten free) and find that you have to shop around for variety. However I found with Morrison’s that the online store was often out of stock of things I wanted with no subs. Tried it a couple of times but ended up going back to Tesco because they were better stocked. I can see what he’s saying but his approach is a bit off.

escapetothecuntree · 18/08/2018 12:22

Only last week he caught me with a pack of ham in the fridge and binned it Envy

Said we had an agreement, no meat in the house. To be fair, he didn't know I was now bringing meat in to the house

I would cook for him/suggest we have veggie versions of the foods I like but he refuses. He says they have no benefits that he needs for whilst he's training at the gym

Get these.
groceries.morrisons.com/webshop/product/Morrisons-Wonky-Carrots/346187011?from=search&tags=%7C105651&param=carrots&parentContainer=SEARCHcarrots

35p, you get loads more and they probably taste of carrot not water.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 18/08/2018 12:27

He threw out a pack of ham I would throw him out who does he think he is stopping an adult from eating what they want let him eat his airy fairy organic unicorn shit and sunshine and you just think about yourself.

MatildaTheCat · 18/08/2018 12:27

I’m astonished that your AIBU is in relation to Morrison’s vs Sainsbury when it clearly should be ‘AIBU to think my DH is a complete bellend when it comes to food?’

I saw some tinned veg in our Costcutter yesterday, mushy peas for 22p anyone? 🤣

TheRattleBag · 18/08/2018 12:30

I like tinned carrots and I'm not ashamed to admit it!
