to not want it to be made legal to vape on buses?

I've just seen an article on BBC where it is considered that vaping should be made legal on buses and other public transport. I am all for vaping. My partner vapes and whilst he has a phlegmy throat because of it, it's much better than smoking. He doesn't do it in the house, I'm 28 weeks pregnant and have suffered from morning sickness throughout (so may be slightly biased), but still, I hate the smell. It makes me want to vomit and when he did do it in the house it filled the room with vapour so quickly it's like being in stars in their eyes.

AIBU that we should absolutely be encouraging vaping, but there's no reason why it still can't be limited to outdoor spaces?

Such a backwards move, and judging by the response on this thread it would be political suicide to go ahead with it! Can only assume that the people proposing it don't often travel on buses.

Personally I would like to see it made illegal to eat hot food on buses, I hate it when people are eating chips or bits of chicken on a bus, smells disgusting and they always seem to be the sort of people who haven't worked out the relationship between their crappy rubbish and a bin.

RomanyRoots · 18/08/2018 14:32

YABU bring back smoking everywhere and stop the bloody whinging Grin

Grin

😂

They should not allow vaping on buses, in workplaces & cafes, pubs etc unless & until they are going to a) make vaping prescriptions available on the NHS on the same basis that other NRT are currently available, or b) they completely ban smoking in all public places. Neither of which they'll be willing to do, I'll bet.

I think the smell of vaping is horrid, FWIW, although I think it's a great idea in principle. I mostly wish the things weren't so highly perfumed - surely it would be possible to make a neutral or unscented one. Or do they have to scent it so much to disguise something? It is really nice to be able to walk down the street without constantly coughing because of someone's smoke - I'm severely asthmatic & it's part of the reason I never got into the habit of going out drinking.

CheshireChat · 18/08/2018 17:24

Whilst I don't mind the smell, I don't tend to mind sweet smells in general tbf, I would hate it in any enclosed space and seeing as quite often get motion sickness it's not hard to connect the dots as to what would happen.

Not to mention asthmatics and young children and newborns on buses who shouldn't be exposed to this and could be potentially life threatening for them.

CookiesandQueen · 18/08/2018 17:26

Yanbu. I'm sick of walking behind people and getting a cloud of bubblegum or raspberry smoke in my face, the last thing I want is to have to put up with it on the bus, where I can't escape!

OutPinked · 18/08/2018 17:55

YANBU. There’s not enough known about vaping to consider it safe and I’m dubious as to its safety in all honesty. Plus I find vape clouds as obnoxious as smoke.

Samantha093 · 18/08/2018 18:11

There is no evidence of any harm from vapour.
There never used to be any evidence of any harm from passive smoking.
The harm is the unpleasantness it causes.

GinAfterBedtime · 18/08/2018 18:14

Yadnbu.

I hate the smell of them. They smell like cheap air freshener. Whilst I accept it's probably better for people to inhale that than smoke, I don't want to have to inhale those stinky chemicals thanks!

No reason why vaping shouldn't be limited to outside.

Bluelady · 18/08/2018 18:14

A lot less unpleasant and harmful than traffic fumes.

Coconutcake0 · 18/08/2018 18:33

I loathe it! Its smelly and people look fucking ridiculous doing it. To allow it in buses? Jesus, NO.

"Most evidence seems to suggest it will be as harmful of not more than smoking"

I wish people would stop making up shit like this. Read the MPs report published yesterday.*

www.researchgate.net/profile/Isabel_Hess/publication/301318686_A_systematic_review_of_the_health_risks_from_passive_exposure_to_electronic_cigarette_vapour/links/5716ce5f08aeefeb022c3d98.pdf

"The majority of studies determined that passive exposure to EC vapour may pose a health risk to bystanders."

onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/scin.5591851307

"Electronic cigarettes, marketed as safer than regular cigarettes, deliver a cocktail of toxic chemicals, including carcinogens, into the lungs, new studies show. Using e-cigarettes may even promote antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections. "

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4361011/

"Flavorings are a largely unrecognized potential hazard of ENDS, which are designed to create an ultrafine aerosol that penetrates deeply into the lungs. Respiratory toxins in flavorings thus may pose a threat to the respiratory health of users. The Flavor and Extract Manufacturers Association evaluates the safety of chemicals used in food flavorings, many of which also may be used in ENDS. However, the association's research is limited to the evaluation of the safety of chemicals in food (for ingestion), and as such, ENDS flavorings using the same chemicals cannot be also be deemed “generally recognized as safe” for inhalation.5 For example, the chemical diacetyl (2,3-butanedione) is used to give foods a buttery or creamy flavor. High doses of diacetyl, deemed safe for ingestion by the Flavor and Extract Manufacturers Association and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), have been shown to cause acute-onset bronchiolitis obliterans, a severe and irreversible obstructive lung disease, when inhaled by workers exposed to particulate aerosolized flavorings containing diacetyl. "

Not safe for public transport, in my opinion.
As other PPs have mentioned, we'll see in 20 years the consequences of this. As an ex-smoker, I considered vaping for a long time but the research put me off.

Larrythecat · 18/08/2018 19:47

I wouldn't trust any MP report nowadays. I'd check independent research.
Google Scholar is a great place to find articles (not the standard Google, but scholar.google.co.uk )

NothingOnTellyAgain · 18/08/2018 19:52

"I wouldn't trust any MP report nowadays."

Good point -

Just made me think of MP thing looking into prostitution headed up by Keith Vaz with his undisclosed interest in "breaking in" young men...

I think they heard a LOT from the tobacco / vape industry and not much else. I also think they are looking at tax revenue.

Amortentia · 18/08/2018 19:58

YNBU. The streets are quite narrow where I live and I hate getting stuck behind someone vapping, sometimes it’s like getting blasted in the face with icing sugar.

llangennith · 18/08/2018 19:59

Hate the smell and the billowing clouds of smoke🤪

problembottom · 18/08/2018 20:17

I find the smells really sickly. Hate it when I walk past it on the street, can’t imagine it in a confined space.

Larrythecat · 18/08/2018 20:23

Bluelady, it's safer than cigarettes but that does not mean it's safe. Cigarettes are probably safer than many drugs as well. As a trade, to give up cigarettes, it's better, but when teens are taking it up because they think it's safe, that's misleading and the government should be clearer about it.
Also, the NHS advice is often a bit outdated because they wait ages until research has been done independently and then they still do their own until they can give their own advice. I have a condition for which research has proven around the world that diet improves symptoms, yet the consultants at my hospital keep telling me it has nothing to do. I have very reputable sources proving the opposite, including the leading UK association for sufferers of the condition, but my consultants cannot assume it as official advice until they have reached the same results. So for very new and recent research, they are a bit behind (on the advice, I'm sure they have research labs and departments working on it and doing their tests). All the staff that have agreed or considered this research, have told me so because they have read it or have had other patients commenting on good progress, but they also say it's not considered a treatment yet. (Incidentally, I understand why it's not being researched properly, why would pharma companies research a treatment that is available and free to sll, re: diet?). I personally think that it's in the interest of the tobacco companies (moving to cape) to encourage reports of safety. They also suggested 50-60 years ago that tobacco was healthy and prevented colds!

Larrythecat · 18/08/2018 20:25

*moving to vape

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 19/08/2018 07:27

How on earth are the long term effects even known yet?!
