to not want it to be made legal to vape on buses?

I've just seen an article on BBC where it is considered that vaping should be made legal on buses and other public transport. I am all for vaping. My partner vapes and whilst he has a phlegmy throat because of it, it's much better than smoking. He doesn't do it in the house, I'm 28 weeks pregnant and have suffered from morning sickness throughout (so may be slightly biased), but still, I hate the smell. It makes me want to vomit and when he did do it in the house it filled the room with vapour so quickly it's like being in stars in their eyes.

AIBU that we should absolutely be encouraging vaping, but there's no reason why it still can't be limited to outdoor spaces?

oh no, really? That would be awful.

my neighbour vapes and there's a constant sickly sweet smell that crosses over into here. on a bus or a Tube, it would be really revolting.

I'd actually much rather smell regular nicotine than some of these awful flavours around. (not advocating smoking on public transport, just saying re the smell).

rosiejaune · 17/08/2018 23:54

It's not unlawful to vape on buses etc anyway, but it is against most companies' conditions of carriage.

YANBU, and I don't believe rules should be changed in that way. Smokers have got used to not being able to smoke in those places anyway; they can just wait till they get outside to vape in the same way.

I wonder if any of those MPs have financial interests in vaping companies.

Womaningreen · 17/08/2018 23:56

oh I didn't see Kitten's post

yes I'm suspicious

I did hear that eventually the government plan to tax vaping as they taxed cigarettes, because they've lost revenue from the cigarettes

I have one friend who vapes a solution that is nicotine free? But tbh that's not what I care about - I just think being in an enclosed space with someone vaping would be disgusting. I'd sooner let someone smoke in the flat than vape some bubblegum air smell that never seems to shift.

DamnWhyAreAllTheUsernamesTaken · 17/08/2018 23:58

Same it bloody stinks

Disquieted1 · 18/08/2018 00:06

It depends on the vaper.
Some people take a small discreet pull on an odourless vaper, with others it's like a pimp's limousine with a huge waft of smoke.

As an aside, there seems to be a reflexive response that things, almost anything that anyone in any way does not agree with, should be banned. That's not the kind of society I want to live in.

Womaningreen · 18/08/2018 00:15

no one wants to ban vaping, do they?

just don't want it on public transport.

PickAChew · 18/08/2018 00:15

Encountered a few people gaping marijuana at the back of a bus. Oddly not the sort of people receptive to being politely asked to stop.

keyboardkate · 18/08/2018 00:27

There are so many other things to get your knickers in a twist about, but you focus on this?

What about the effect of Brexit on us all I ask for example?

Fight the right battles. Will leave it there. Thanks.

9amTrain · 18/08/2018 00:50

@keyboardkate um we are more than capable of talking about more than one topic!

Womaningreen · 18/08/2018 01:05

That might be the most bizarre bit of whataboutery I've ever seen.

Septima · 18/08/2018 01:07

I think worrying about being exposed to someone else’s irritant fumes which can affect breathing and probably causes health problems, is a perfectly legitimate thing to
discuss keyboardkate

Singletomingle · 18/08/2018 01:21

I would happily see vaping banned. Mosg evidence seems to suggest it will be as harmful of not more than smoking, however its practitioners are the as entitled as they come. Vapers seem to be everwhere even in restaurants and seem to delight in forcing you to be part of their habit. By all means push it as being healthier but do not force vaping upon those of us who desire to be fog free.

Disquieted1 · 18/08/2018 01:22

Septima
You just made that up! Link the scientific papers.

Disquieted1 · 18/08/2018 01:25

"Most evidence seems to suggest it will be as harmful of not more than smoking"

I wish people would stop making up shit like this. Read the MPs report published yesterday.

Gettingbackonmyfeet · 18/08/2018 01:50

Yanbu OP and I'm a baker but honestly there are some really obnoxious capers out there (my Exdh for one....decent man....obnoxious vaper)

You don't have to expel clouds of bloody smoke but there is always some idiot who does and I don't think anyone should be exposed to that

I vape a lot and have never released the stupid clouds you see...i literally take the edge off of my craving and release a small amount away from other people in an open space but I wouldn't vape in public transport it's just rude

Like anything you have to account for the idiots so yanbu

I'm not going to bother to dignify the worse than smoking assertion....current evidence which includes projected comparisons do not equate it with smoking dangers at all.....but frankly you can't argue with stupid so I won't continue

But yes there were some really obnoxious vapers who shouldn't be encouraged in public

Gettingbackonmyfeet · 18/08/2018 01:51

I'm a vaper not a baker obviously (although I make a mean chocolate brownie)

grace7 · 18/08/2018 01:57

YANBU.
I vape, but I would hate for my baby to be around the vapour - especially indoors or on a bus.

Catmeouws · 18/08/2018 02:04

No you are not being unreasonable. People who vape are nicotine addicts pure and simple. They are just disgusting. Why not let heroin addicts jack up on buses at the same time? We need to end this nicotine nonsense once and for all. My Mum used to say "if we were meant to smoke, God would have given us chimneys".

Septima · 18/08/2018 02:10

I think people with asthma, allergies and migraines are the people most qualified to express their concerns about being exposed to vapour.

HelenaDove · 18/08/2018 02:13

I wouldnt like it either.

a couple in the same block as us smoke really strong weed and we end up with the smell in our flat. it is VILE. And seems to be getting worse.

TTEA · 18/08/2018 08:43

@keyboardkate erm, okay... Hmm

OP posts:
Raven88 · 18/08/2018 08:47

YANBU

NothingOnTellyAgain · 18/08/2018 11:52

"Have we also thought about the impact this could have on people who have given up smoking AND vaping entirely as well? Imagine you had given up vaping in an effort to improve your health and you had to sit on a bus full of vapour."

This is a great point.

I used to smoke 20-30 a day and gave up 12 years ago.

I have smoked when out and drinking about 3 times since then, and then I had a friend and work who vaped. She used to wiggle her eyebrows and we'd go and do it in the work bogs. Obly a few times but the combination of not having to tramp all the way outside, the idea it;s not bad for you (jury is out) and other things make it pretty appealing for an ex smoker. If you could vape everywhere and people were, if it were normalised and sealed as healthy, I think quite a few ex sokers might strart doing it?

But there are other reasons not to be addicted to something (which you will know all about your allen carr!) -
Money
Desperation if you run out
Having when is the next one at the back of your mind
etc etc

I really dont' think it's a good idea to normliase this, I strongly believe that the vape industry has been lobbying hard. The same vape industry that IMO markets hard at 12-20yo. ie they are not people with the best interests of society at heart. They want to make as much money as possible which means having as many addicts as possibile and catching them young.

The tobacco industry were awful for this. Gernuinely, appallingly, lying, illegally awful. Is it the same companies that are running the vape companies?

Just googled - yes it is. Not good.
