Invited friends round for drinks and dinner. Things were a bit delayed because I was sorting out kids etc. Served dinner, heard a knock at the door my male friend had ordered a takeaway for one and was incensed when we pulled him up on it. AIBU?

There is nothing worse than being starving and not being able to take over the kitchen to cook yourself something up.

We serve dinner by 8pm at the very latest. It's 6:45pm here and DH is about to get a boot up his arse because the kids are hungry and the lasagne is taking far too long. It needs to be in the oven in 5mins and on the table in 25.

rainbowsandsmiles · 11/08/2018 23:46

b) OP served dinner at nine but was posting on here @ 9.58. What sort of dinner invite is this?? Shouldn’t you be topping up drinks and serving pudding at this point??

Lol, good point! Grin Not only does OP apparently not serve up any dinner until 9pm (presumably without telling guests what's going on/expected?) she bogs off to the bogs to MN halfway through to moan about how rude they are Grin

Honeyroar · 11/08/2018 23:46

To be fair, you've epically failed if your dinner guests order takeaway.

I once went to a wedding where there was so little food that people actually ordered taxis to bring them food from the chippy in the next village.

hadenough · 11/08/2018 23:47

If someone did this when a guest at mine I'd be both upset and offended.

I wouldn't be in a rush to invite them again and it's definitely not something I'd do when a guest (however hungry).

shinyredbus · 11/08/2018 23:47

9pm for dinner?!?!

Katedotness1963 · 11/08/2018 23:59

We went to a barbecue last Sunday. Invited for 3 nothing put on the grill till eight. There was a small plate of veg and dip but one of the other guests kept double dipping so that put me off. Hosts were half canned when the food finally got started so everything was overcooked and dry. I wish I'd ordered a bloody pizza delivery...

LilMadAgain · 12/08/2018 00:04

kate that's awful! You must have been sloshed, that's a minimum of five hours with no food and lots of booze??

NewtScamandersNaughtyNiffler · 12/08/2018 00:05

I want a chip butty now Grin

LilacIris · 12/08/2018 00:05

ordered a takeaway for one and was incensed when we pulled him up on it. AIBU?

Were you incensed because the takeaway was only for one person when you all wanted to share?

SimonBridges · 12/08/2018 00:05

Perhaps the op is in Ireland where eating as late as 9pm is normal, especially for children. Grin

Mummyoflittledragon · 12/08/2018 00:06

What time is the guests arrive? What did you serve them? You say he remained indignant. What did he say?

SassitudeandSparkle · 12/08/2018 00:08

It's always carnage if drink is served and the food is late - I recall a wedding where the guests got a bit loud about the lack of food!

OP, have you started the desserts yet?

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 12/08/2018 00:11

Why does everyone think 9.00 p.m. is so late for a dinner party/Saturday night?

Restaurants are at their busiest at around this time. Most dinner invitations would be 7 - 7.30 arrive, drinks, etc. so dinner at 9 p.m. isn't so crazy.

9.00 p.m. seems completely civilised to me anyway! Grin

thebewilderness · 12/08/2018 00:12

Unless they have special diet requirements it is pure jerk behavior.

Witchend · 12/08/2018 00:14

If I'd arrived for a dinner, expecting to ear at say 7, which is later than I often eat, if nothing had arrived by 9pm, it would be very likely I would be getting signs of a migraine starting.
If we order from the local Chinese, it's often been with us within 15 minutes, so not necessarily that long a wait.

GrandTheftWalrus · 12/08/2018 00:18

Now I want a kebab but the Indian is 2 mins away and I am not spending 2 quid on delivery from a place I can see.

inquiquotiokixul · 12/08/2018 00:20

Some people consider 5:30 or 6 to be a reasonable time for the last meal of the day. Did you make it clear what the plan was when inviting them?

We've had to leave before the meal was served on one occasion when it was 3 hours after we'd expected to be fed and 30 minutes after the latest we could manage to leave to be back home at a reasonable time.

KeepServingTheDrinks · 12/08/2018 00:25

OP is strangely quiet!

Zoflorabore · 12/08/2018 00:29

Picturing the main on my head.

  • pot noodle ( choice of brown or green )
Plus soy sauce
  • Home made findus crispy pancakes and beans, gravy optional
  • macaroni a la tin

-freshly made soup. Well it was fresh when Heinz put it in the tin. Served with part baked rolls and a knob of anchor

Sorry op I'm just being silly but who the hell serves oven chips and bread to guests?
Especially if they are coming for an actual meal which they will still be eating.

Chips and bread are stodgy and filling.

Please tell me they were McCain or similar?

This has got to be a wind up....

FrayedHem · 12/08/2018 00:34

I hope you also served some toothpaste after dinner mints.

MaryDollNesbitt · 12/08/2018 00:48

Well he was hungry and showed initiative, youre not of pocket. whats the problem

^ Had me buckled Grin

SandAndSea · 12/08/2018 01:21

OP... how can I put this...? ... I think - think! - you might need to work on your hosting skills.

stevesmithsmum · 12/08/2018 01:28

observtions from the bleachers:

Chips and bread as starters for a dinner party is weird. Cheers, olives, crackers, chips, nuts, cold meats etc yes. What did you give them, the kids left overs?

If he got his mel at 9pm, he must have ordered it by 7.30? He must have arrived 6.30-7? The writing was on the wall for him, the host is disorganised and dinner ain’t coming any time soon.

Running after the kids whilst hosting a dinner party? That doesn’t work does it?

Dinner for one does seem weird. I’d have made the offer as a broadcast.

Greenyogagirl · 12/08/2018 01:34

YABU his takeaway sounds delicious, what did you serve? Were the chips a starter?
What time was dinner?
If dinner was at 6, I’d want to be home for 9 to be honest Grin

Greenyogagirl · 12/08/2018 01:38

OP is strangely quiet! I suspect either serving pudding or has fallen asleep in a carb induced stupor
