Visitor ordering only for themselves

Invited friends round for drinks and dinner. Things were a bit delayed because I was sorting out kids etc. Served dinner, heard a knock at the door my male friend had ordered a takeaway for one and was incensed when we pulled him up on it. AIBU?

This is like one of those vague attention seeking Facebook statuses

This ^

Come on @boingbat you owe it to MN to answer some of these questions.

WickedWitchOfTheWest83 · 13/08/2018 23:57

Were you so annoyed that you snapped and farted???

bonquiqui · 14/08/2018 00:02

@SheGotBetteDavisEyes

- and people who are gnawing their arms off/feigning illness and storming off because they haven't eaten within 10 minutes of arriving at 6.30 or something.

Ha ha! Grin

All the suggested complaining seems to be in an unrealistically formal tone too. "I'm very sorry, but I must leave hence as my allotted eating window has been missed and must be hospitalised immediately" etc, whereas with my friend I'd be in the kitchen like "FFS, where's the food? What are you faffing with? Nobody likes oven chips and they're a ridiculous starter"... on reflection, I sound like an uncouth, terrible dinner guest and friend.

One of the most disappointing things about this thread is that it's not a Come Dine With Me episode. It'd be an absolute gem. I keep picturing it with the voiceover and laughing!

MRSRUDEBOX · 14/08/2018 00:03

I want to know what the Main was and why OP was on MN at 2158hrs.

bonquiqui · 14/08/2018 00:08

@NataliaOsipova tend to eat around 8.30 to 9 here. Later on weekends sometimes.

My parents are very northern and have always ate early, think 4.30. When a meal is going to be complex and might be shock horror served at around 6.00, my mum refers to it as "a late tea" Grin

Brother and I are invariably making rounds of toast by 9pm when we stay as dinner is already a distant memory!

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 14/08/2018 00:22

I'm very sorry, but I must leave hence as my allotted eating window has been missed and must be hospitalised immediately etc

This would be the most amazing CDWM. It might even beat my all-time favourite of That One Where a bloke forced his guests to pick sushi from a complete stranger's sweaty, hairy torso.

Carrie80 · 14/08/2018 03:38

What is wrong with people so dinner was a bit late, glad everyone else's lives are so perfect nothing ever goes wrong and every thing runs on time ALWAYS

Bashun · 14/08/2018 03:51

What did he say when you told him that he was wrong?

bonquiqui · 14/08/2018 11:10

@SheGotBetteDavisEyes My favourites are the Lesley Joseph one (total drunken mess, inedible food and comes out in a Doreen cocktail dress at the end) and the one where the woman gets so drunk and overwhelmed that she just goes to bed after the starter, leaving the other guests to make dinner - which was an Old El Paso fajita meal kit anyway 😂

strawberrisc · 14/08/2018 11:27

Op?

PeachyPeachTrees · 14/08/2018 13:54

I had a group of friends over for dinner and drinks on Saturday night. My kids skipped bath that evening, my DH put them to bed, they had quick and easy food as had big hot dinner earlier in the day.
I was going to have food ready for about 7.30pm but we were so busy chatting it got a bit delayed until 8.30pm. I had snacks to tide people over if they wanted any. I did a buffet, so everyone had a choice and I don't have to worry about who eats what and who eats more than others. Keep it simple and well thought out and the evening runs smoothly and everyone's happy! Halo

can I have my badge now?

Gilly12345 · 14/08/2018 16:04

Hilarious this is why I love Mumsnet you just can't make this stuff up LOL

I don't think you were a very good host, really bread and oven chips, can't you of arranged a kids sleep over at grandparents for the evening? Serving food at 9pm is ok but not very considerate.

CrispsAndDip · 14/08/2018 17:13

I think we should create an ending between us. It's clearly bullshit anyway lol

CountessWindyBottom · 14/08/2018 17:36

This is beyond lol worthy, what a splendid AIBU! I do think the thread title is rather illuminating however as 'Visitor only ordering for themselves' suggests to me that the hostess took umbridge at the guest ordering just 'for one' as specified by her good self rather than the act in itself.

I really don't think it should come as much of a pearl-clutching shock that he resorted to such measures when he arrived to a house in chaos, was provided with an oven chip amuse bouche and a slab of loaf to satiate him when in all honesty such manners might lead one to reasonably believe that the hosts may just resort to eating their guests.

We need a full and frank run dish of the evening OP.

CountessWindyBottom · 14/08/2018 17:37

*run down not run dish (although I would like to know what was served to the remaining guests) Thanking you!

perfectstorm · 19/08/2018 01:28

I have no idea what is normal any more from reading threads on MN.

There needs to be a t shirt saying this.

MovingThisYearHopefully · 19/08/2018 01:55

What a waste of time this was! Angry
