He is clearly racist. He should be thrown out of the Conservative party.

Yes left wing mysogynistis too though remember self ID?

Hard left and hard right equally mysogynistic

downthestrada · 08/08/2018 09:58

scaryteacher Yes. Which is good. But, he deliberately chose not to use demeaning language against the President of Chechnya. The women are the easier target. Even if he insulted both sides, you could at least say he was being fairer.

There was no need for it in the article. If he really wanted to get his point across in a reasonable way that people would appreciate, then he would have left those terms out. He knew exactly what he was doing. He doesn’t care about the debate.

20nil · 08/08/2018 09:59

Yes agree about left wing misogyny too. So much of it around at the moment.

LassWiADelicateAir · 08/08/2018 10:04

If he genuinely believes the women may be the victims of oppression then surely the focus on any ridicule should be the oppressors not the victims

Yes but Muslim women in the UK have done a good job over the years of convincing everyone that they choose to cover because it liberates them and brings them closer to God

Choosing to wear a burqa in the UK or Europe is the extreme end of the line where the other end is choosing to be a prostitute or a stripper. They are all about objectification of female bodies and whether they should be hidden or displayed.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 08/08/2018 10:04

I wish there was a strong centre party

The thought of Boris as PM horrifies me but slightly worse is the thoughtof Corbyn

Please Keir Starmer, Anna Soubry, Dan Jarvis, Ken Clarke anyone sensible step forward and make that challenge

Helmetbymidnight · 08/08/2018 10:06

Brexiteers can’t get enough of Boris.
He really does it for them.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 08/08/2018 10:09

scaryteacher
Boris Johnson started as a journalist at the Times in 1987 - he was sacked for falsifying a quotation. He then moved to the Telegraph and worked as a journalist until 1999. In 1999 he moved to editing the Spectator and won his first Parliamentary seat in 2001. He has continued to work part time as a journalist.

So how likely is it a man who has spent 31 years working in journalism accidently included certain expressions that have caused attention grabbing headlines.

derxa · 08/08/2018 10:19

He's worried that Sajid Javid is leading the polls on who will be the next Tory leader.

hackmum · 08/08/2018 10:25

Mother40: "essentially i agree with what he was saying and don't think that women should be allowed the Burka in this country. I hate seeing women wearing it as see it as a sign of oppression."

But Boris was saying the burka shouldn't be banned.

The problem with banning it is this: if you actually see it as a sign of oppression, the only people you harm by banning it are the women. How is turning them into criminals going to liberate them, exactly?

lazyhazysummer · 08/08/2018 10:26

Isn't it ironic that women choose to wear it in the UK, yet in certain countries in the Middle East they have no choice. How some of those oppressed women would love to have it banned. If I was a Muslim woman here I would never wear it as a gesture of defiance against the men who treat women as lesser human beings and force them to cover up, and also in solidarity to the brave women who fight hard to overturn the compulsory wearing of it.

scaryteacher · 08/08/2018 10:33

Chaz I don't think they were accidental, as he wanted to make a point, and have the discussion, and it worked. It's akin to the atheist bus campaign, saying there is probably no God. There may not be, but it got people engaged in thinking about God and religion! We are now discussing views on banning the burka and the Judah, and have even discussed being able to critique Islam on this thread, so his comments did work, and got the article noticed.

I find the niqab sinister, though I don't mind the hijab or chador, as faces can still be seen.

Cuppaorwine · 08/08/2018 10:44

It is isn’t it. Not a good time for women yet again.

i wish there was a strong centre party

Totally agree. Love all those names and can I add yvette cooper, and Hillary Benn.

Cuppaorwine · 08/08/2018 10:45

See Boris heads all the papers and phone in on radio 5 today. Devious he is

Mousefunky · 08/08/2018 10:45

He reminds me a lot of Prince Phillip tbh and sadly we can’t throw him out...

Cuppaorwine · 08/08/2018 10:46

I do really struggle with the full face burka. Banning it smacks of controlling women but allowing it feels the same. Sad

longwayoff · 08/08/2018 10:48

Sajid Javid as leader? What would the orange golem in the White House have to say? He's already palpitating over Sadiq Khan.

20nil · 08/08/2018 10:51

Really dubious about a centre party too, not least because in reality the left of centre Tories and right of centre Labour MPs have very little in common apart from Brexit.

ImAIdoot · 08/08/2018 10:52

I think the reaction to the article is a perfect example of dog-whistle politics itself.

Panicky virtue signalling and lust to censor/silence abound, and quite a lot of right on people seem to demonstrate in their comments that they don't actually know what the thrust of the article was.

Ominous times.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 08/08/2018 10:54

Yes Yvette Cooper and and Hillary Benn should certainly be added to the list both would make excellent leaders of the new party

HesterShaw1 · 08/08/2018 11:00

Regardless of whether his comments were racist or just meant to be plainly insulting, it's not the way we should expect a senior politician to behave.

This. Learn some fucking decorum Boris, you awful twat.

Dapplegrey · 08/08/2018 11:05

Redpanda you want him thrown off a cliff?
Would you like all Tories to be thrown off a cliff?

Dottierichardson · 08/08/2018 11:19

Boris didn’t need to discuss the depersonalisation of women, but he has stuck up for tolerance AND challenged poor treatment of women.

The bank robber jokes are for the people who would otherwise not listen to anything about women’s rights, and for headlines. It is bloody clever politics.

And Boris Johnson who has no profile in regard to women’s rights, suddenly decided to build one by way of Islamophobic remarks? Blatantly disregarding the fact that because there are many Muslim women who wear niqabs/hijab/burkas they have borne the brunt of anti-Islam attacks in public? Women who have had their scarves ripped from their heads, been punched etc…And a senior politician ridiculing woman in this way just encourages others to do so…and some may do so in more direct and harmful ways.

I think a lot of people think burqas do look utterly ridiculous.
I think people wearing high heels look ridiculous, heels which deform feet and damage muscles. However this thread is not about individual views on styles of women’s clothing.

longwayoff · 08/08/2018 11:22

I refer all centre party enthusiasts to the 1980s. Michael Foot,
militant hard left takeover, Liverpool, gang of four, SDP etc. Those who don't learn from history are condemned to repeat it.

DarlingNikita · 08/08/2018 11:25

YANBU. Of course he should be. But they daren't. Theresa May's response has been mealy-mouthed at best, and actually downright cowardly.

He recently met with Steve Bannon, so it's possible that this article is part of a wider strategy.

It absolutely is. The right wing of the party membership will lap this kind of stuff up, and he'll be able to go to the parliamentary party, point to his popularity ratings and say 'Do you want me as leader or do you want to risk Corbyn getting in?' Bob's your uncle and Johnson is Tory leader.

I think a lot of people think burqas do look utterly ridiculous.

He shouldn’t have said it but most people in the UK think face covering is a barrier to integration and normal life
Don't be so fucking stupid. Who on earth is 'most people' and how would you know?

Dottierichardson · 08/08/2018 11:30

*“Jacob Rees-Mogg, another Eurosceptic Tory MP, said: "It's hard to see what he should apologise for. He has defended people's right to wear the burka whilst saying it is an inelegant garment.”

Colour me surprised that Mogg is defending this

Johnson has been key in supporting Rees-Mogg in trying to take down May. So he's obviously going to support Johnson now.
