He is clearly racist. He should be thrown out of the Conservative party.

OP posts:
EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 08/08/2018 09:22

Mmm

He knows what will get noticed that’s exactly why he wrote it

He isn’t a fool

noblegiraffe · 08/08/2018 09:24

he is making the point that a female student covers their face, then that shouldn't be allowed

Why are you and Johnson using the word ‘female’ here when it should be superfluous to his argument?
Why didn’t he say ‘if a student turned up to a lecture looking like a bank robber’?

PerkingFaintly · 08/08/2018 09:25

It's almost as though there's something else going on at the moment that Boris Johnson would like to distract us from his part in...

Cuppaorwine · 08/08/2018 09:27

Agree he’s no fool.

I think there are orchestrated plots on both sides to be honest. Both labour and Tory back benchers are plotting to get rid of their leaders.

Boris couldn’t get sacked although he tried hard enough, TM wanted her enemy close. So he finally resigned.

Corbyns such a last prat he won’t see it coming but it is, thankfully

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 08/08/2018 09:28

scaryteacher

Boris is not politically unaware he fully understood the impact of including those expressions. He could have easily and successfully made his point without them.

Cuppaorwine · 08/08/2018 09:29

Lazy prat obviously

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 08/08/2018 09:31

Totally agree Cuppaorwine

I’m just not sure if Boris will go for it before or after Brexit

Sadly Momentum have still got too much of a hold over Labour Corbyn is both stupid and too lazy to both to do much about his backbenchers

SlothSlothSloth · 08/08/2018 09:31

It enrages me how untouchable Boris is. He’s successfully baked “gaffs” into his character, so no matter what racist bile he comes out with, it’s presented as just being part of his quirky little ways.

downthestrada · 08/08/2018 09:33

I do wonder if he’s now hoping to get kicked out the party. Then he can start a new political party with Steve Bannon’s help. I can just see it. He would be the hard done by pariah, that just wanted to speak his mind. An upper class Tommy Robinson with the political experience that might make people actually vote for him.

Confusedbeetle · 08/08/2018 09:37

Boris Johnson has used two words people have homes in on, whether he did this to keep in the news, or just because he is an oaf, depends on your view. However, people really need to read the article instead of making judgements on soundbites. He is against the banning of the burka although he personally doesn't like it. As was said on the news this morning, could we have less about Boris and the words, and more about an open debate whether a burka is a symbol of patriarchal oppression or a women's free choice, whether it fits with European ideas or not? I am not a Boris fan but really, discuss the actual issue, not the man. Ken Clarke has made similar comments no call for resignation

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 08/08/2018 09:37

No he won’t split the Tory party it’s far too successful to split

Threats of him being kicked out will round up support for him within the party and gain support from outside

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 08/08/2018 09:38

Having read his article it doesn’t seem racist or bigoted at all. The media have just seized on those two quotes to get a reaction.

If he genuinely believes the women may be the victims of oppression then surely the focus on any ridicule should be the oppressors not the victims.

Yes but Muslim women in the UK have done a good job over the years of convincing everyone that they choose to cover because it liberates them and brings them closer to God.

Any discussion about women’s dress in the UK has to acknowledge women’s choice and concentrate on critiquing the cultural pressures or religious beliefs that lead to women choosing to dress how they do.

Cuppaorwine · 08/08/2018 09:38

Oh doenthestrsda

That’s a very interesting idea.

Still leaves the back bench labour MPs though plotting and yes Enthusiasm sgree but I think there may be another new party???

noblegiraffe · 08/08/2018 09:40

I think I hope he or Mogg becomes leader of the Tories and that all the reasonable Labour MPs horrified by the anti-Semitism and hard left stuff in Labour and all the more moderate non-racist Tory MPs break away and form a party that I might actually not be horrified by the thought of being in power.

People are too wedded to party over policies though.

Mother40 · 08/08/2018 09:41

I'm not sure why Boris chose the phrases he used, although obviously has got him a lot.of attention, but essentially i agree with what he was saying and don't think that women should be allowed the Burka in this country. I hate seeing women wearing it as see it as a sign of oppression.

PerkingFaintly · 08/08/2018 09:44

downthestrada, that wouldn't surprise me at all.

One thing that's really important for Bannon-type strategies is a narrative of martyrdom.

That's kinda hard to achieve if you've had Boris's life-history. So "martyred for telling the truth about Islam" would be a viable strategy.

noblegiraffe · 08/08/2018 09:44

Having read his article it doesn’t seem racist or bigoted at all. The media have just seized on those two quotes to get a reaction.

Why do you think Johnson included those two quotes? Because he didn’t realise they’d be picked up by the media (he’s an idiot?) or because he did?

20nil · 08/08/2018 09:47

The ONLY time right wing twats like BJ claim to care about women’s rights is in the context of wider racism and xenophobia. Look at UKIP and FGM, for example.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 08/08/2018 09:47

Yes I can see Labour splitting a pro EU Party but I think they have missed the boat I think most people are fed up with Brexit and just want it over with but could win a sizable vote but then so did UKIP

Not the Tories there is no need they have their core voters they want the floating voters that May hasn’t appealed to and keep the ones she has. The Tory party is successful in that being in power is what is most important of it looks as though their man is Boris then that’s who will be supported

And those that voted for the first time for Corbyn many question his lack of challenging the government over Brexit that will lose votes he still have his faithful martyrs banging on about how the establishment fear him

mirialis · 08/08/2018 09:49

Boris Johnson is a twat of the highest order.

It's not racist to say that women in burkas/niqab look ridiculous. Irrespective of anyone questions over oppression v choice or religion v culture etc. they are just ridiculous outfits for 21st century life and people look wearing them - just look at how many you tube videos there are showing people how to eat whilst wearing the niqab and having to pick up food with their gloved hands on and try to eat it behind their veil.

Ridiculous!

downthestrada · 08/08/2018 09:50

noblegirrafe exactly!

To the people complaining about hiking in on those two words. That’s why he included them! The article would have been great without them, but wouldn’t have achieved what HE wanted. He doesn’t care about have a good debate about face coverings, he only wants to further his own political agenda.

He’s not dumb enough to think that people wouldn’t notice what he wrote and he’s managed to call out to the people he’s looking to engage.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 08/08/2018 09:51

Boris Johnson, an experienced career journalist, who gets paid over £250K a year to write for the Telegraph and has previously edited the Spectator knows exactly what the media will pick up on. He fully understood that those phrases would cause headlines and what sort of reaction they would cause.

Cuppaorwine · 08/08/2018 09:52

noblegiraff

All the moderate labour and Tory MPs coming together horrified at the extremes in their party to form a new centre party

We can dream. Wink

downthestrada · 08/08/2018 09:53

The ONLY time right wing twats like BJ claim to care about women’s rights is in the context of wider racism and xenophobia. Look at UKIP and FGM, for example.

Right!

And make sure to not look like you care too much, or you might lose some followers. Oh I know! Let’s add some dehumanising language and insulting descriptions. That should do the trick.

scaryteacher · 08/08/2018 09:53

Downthestrada End of para 1 that I posted from the article. He specifically criticises the President of Chechnya, names him, and the actions the President wanted taken against women who don't cover.
