He is clearly racist. He should be thrown out of the Conservative party.

So if we disagree with the hive mind, we are labelled racist far right bigots. Fyi my family are immigrants who were masacured by the Muslim Turkish government.

Aeroflotgirl · 08/08/2018 20:17

During 1915, not dissimilar to what Hitlar did to the Jews.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/08/2018 20:18

We don't need a new centre party, we have one we need a stronger Lib Dem party, one with a backbone.

Aeroflotgirl · 08/08/2018 20:18

Those who did not convert to become Muslim were masacured in the most horrific way. Heard of the Armenians, that is us!

ratchethandler · 08/08/2018 20:32

If a woman chooses the burqua, then you could argue that its just taking the piss out of her dress sense So what?..After all politicians, directly or indirectly, attacked 'hoodies'. Cameron especially with the 'hug a hoodie' thing - which he didn't even say.

There is nothing sacred about politicians' making comments. There is no 'pedestal' on which they stand in a moral sense. They can and should say whatever they like. That's democracy.

Cuppaorwine · 08/08/2018 20:40

plimmy

Yes agree and the the present Labour Party front bench are a disgrace.

whatsThstallAbout

Don’t be silly if you come into a long thread please take time to read all the comments before you give us the benefit of your pearls of wisdom. There is no such thing as a racist islamaphobe you can’t be racist to a religion. Educate yourself.

I think that about sums it up.very very manipulative man.

Lib Dem’s are finished. Old hat. The coalition finished them. We need a new party

Problem is what does the new party stand on, YouGov did a poll showing the most fertile ground and its not centre left

It’s pretty obvious boris is setting out his stall to attract a certain type of voter. He makes valid points about the burka and personally I would like to see it banned like many countries have done, it is a symbol of how certain types men view women. It hinders communication and therefore intergration. His, no doubt carefully chosen, words masquerading as the bumbling of a baffoon aligned his position to a growing number of voters.

Cuppaorwine · 08/08/2018 20:56

justAnother

Mmmm it’s a problem I can’t deny. Depressing

20nil · 08/08/2018 20:58

No, we need the existing parties to begin to act for the good of the country. Right now.

ratchethandler · 08/08/2018 20:59

a certain type of voter wouldn't those voters be people just like you who share your views on banning the burkha etc..?

MrsAidanTurner · 08/08/2018 21:06

A woman wearing a full face covering is extreme.

She may not be extremist but someone around her will be otherwise.. They wouldn't be wearing full coverings.
It's only common in Saudi, Iran, Afghanistan which all have atrocious human rights, appalling disgraceful women's rights issues... The Saudi brand of whabbism had been exported to UK mosques.. So I can't really see what's not extreme about it.

Cuppaorwine · 08/08/2018 21:12

Ratchet

I think it’s quite commen to feel very conflicted by the full face burka and see it as oppressive and mysogynistic but banning it is controlling women’s choices although I tend to agree those around her may be the ones in control. As said above

in Iran the law requires women to wear modest "Islamic" clothing. In practice, this means women must wear a chador, a full-body cloak, or a headscarf and a manteau (overcoat) that covers their arms.
There are posters in cities and towns comparing unveiled women to unwrapped candy and lollipops attracting unwanted attention from flies. Recently, some Iranian women have protested against this law by taking off their headscarf in public. One woman was jailed for two years in March for doing this

Maybe all Muslim women should remove all head and face coverings in support of this woman?

For all the fearmongering in the papers, neither the right wing or Islamic fundamentalists are as much of an immediate, real threat to our way of life as those who would erode free speech.

According to a freedom of information request by the Telegraph, over 3000 Britons are arrested for posting opinions on twitter/facebook that other people find "offensive" each year. Before you go down the path of which opinions those are, and I am sure some of them are awful opinions, remember that this can, at the drop of a hat, be you because you are "exclusionary" or "radical" in your beliefs about eg: safeguarding - and you can expect others to speak up for you as much as you do for anyone else. You will be a bigot, after all. Right wing don't you know.

lazyhazysummer · 08/08/2018 21:48

How do we know that secretly muslim women would be pleased with a ban. I find it hard to believe that any woman can enjoy wearing a full head to toe niqab. From the books i have read about women who live in countries where it's enforced they absolutely hate it.Who wouldn't, especially in sweltering heat. It's all about suppression of women.Id love to see the men have to wear them.

Vicky1990 · 08/08/2018 21:56

Boris said what most of us are thinking.
It is disgraceful that these women are forced to wear this outfit by the toxic Muslim culture dominated by men that is so alian to British norms and customs. Boris should not be hounded for expressing his thoughts on what we can all see as a suppression of women and girls.
If people want to make politics out of this then look first at Corbins support of the IRA who murdered thousands of people, and his attitude towards the Jewish nation.

NK493efc93X1277dd3d6d4 · 08/08/2018 21:57

Maybe he should just be banned from Mumsnet where many of the professionally offended appear to reside.
The majority of posters who are offended by his comments do not seem to be burkha wearers or even muslims.
Free speech on here is usually only acceptable to most posters providing you do not veer to the right of the centre line.

doublehelix · 08/08/2018 22:16

I recently read the "I am Malala" autobiography. The day to day misogyny she experienced was shocking (though her own family more liberal than most). If the culture was female friendly but had this clothing that's one thing, but both together screams oppression.

Insensitive method but essence correct. I wouldn't want to have a doctor or teacher where there face is concealed.

Also not RELIGIOUS requirement. Just some subcultures.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 08/08/2018 22:22

A new centrist party really only works if the two existing parties fragment at the same time doesn’t it? If May and Corbyn manage to keep their parties in one piece, I don’t see how a new party stands a chance at taking the centre.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 08/08/2018 22:24

Unfortunately racism occurs in the far left and far right extremes and for some god awful reason we have a far right front bench and a far left shadow front bench

Yep Sad

I agree Boris should go, though - not because of being racist (which this particular incident wasn't) but because he's an offensive, dangerous trouble maker
