He is clearly racist. He should be thrown out of the Conservative party.

Uh Sadiq Khan by the look of it.

SlowlyButSurly · 08/08/2018 16:48

These women (generally)are not being forced to wear the niqab. They are young, bor and raised here. They do not want to conform to the cultural norms of their family, nor the cultural norms that society dictates. They have carved out an identity for themselves. They identify as british muslims. They are not oppressed by their husbands as many are young unmarried women, nor are they walking around with a superiority complex as someone upthread suggested. They have to defend their choices from both east and west. Live and let live.

PerkingFaintly · 08/08/2018 16:51

Well, I think this is going absolutely crackingly for Johnson.

He's back on the front pages.

He's playing the hero to those who liked the dog whistle.

If, god forbid, the Tory party should in fact chuck him out, he'll become a martyr.

All this for a man who'd just lost his cabinet job in the midst of the shambles that is Brexit, for which he is rightly being blamed.

So much winning.Hmm

WhollyFather · 08/08/2018 16:52

Boris is not a racist, many people (not on MN, obviously) agree with his comments and he will not be apologising.

The incident can be considered as the opening shot in Boris' campaign for the leadership, probably ending with a coup at or just before Conference.

PerkingFaintly · 08/08/2018 16:54

Well you would know, WhollyFather. I've noticed you get your lines from fairly close to the same wellspring.

PerkingFaintly · 08/08/2018 16:54

Blimey, mixed my metaphors a bit there...Blush

I would be quite surprised, tbh.

I think he deliberately quit the cabinet well in advance of Brexit because he knows it is going to be an absolute clusterfuck and he wants to distance himself from the government so he can pretend he had no responsibility for it and that if he had been in charge everyone would have got their promised unicorn.

He has shown no signs of actually wanting to be in charge of this almighty balls-up in the last two years.

Deshasafraisy · 08/08/2018 16:58

This isn’t a gaff on his part, it’s carefully planned out. His comments will appeal to the ever growing number of radical racists in this country and he has now secured their vote.

YeTalkShiteHen · 08/08/2018 17:01

Many people agree with Tommy Robinson, Donald Trump and Harvey Weinstein.

Popularity of opinion has no bearing on whether it’s right or decent!

Helmetbymidnight · 08/08/2018 17:03

I don’t know what his motives are. Confused

I’m glad Dominic grieve has said he’ll leave the tories should Boris become leader.

Surely boris doesn’t really want to lead though, surely???

marsbarsandtwix · 08/08/2018 17:03

I lump Boris, David Davis and Farage into the same category. Privileged white middle aged men who think they are the authority on everything and speak for the average man on the street, including all issues pertaining to women. Mansplaining types who are dinosaurs and should be extinct.
Boris however is also a wolf in sheeps clothing, very unpleasant views trying to hide under a buffoon exterior. His outspoken views might be suited to a comedian but not a politician.

Helmetbymidnight · 08/08/2018 17:04

I thought that was v funny.

Brahumbug · 08/08/2018 17:07

Boris is a vile knob head. But criticising a frankly ridiculous piece of clothing? How is that racist? I will say it as well, Burqas are vile and a tool of oppression of women. Please don't give me any crap about freedom of choice, the pressure to conform and wear the Burqa is a huge part of the mysogynistic nonsense called Islam, just like the other Abrahamic faiths

Helmetbymidnight · 08/08/2018 17:09

Has anyone on the thread said they liked the burkha then, brahumbug?

Theworldisfullofgs · 08/08/2018 17:18

Boris would be a terrible PM because he is only interested in Boris.

He said it for effect and self publicity.
He has not a care for the impact on Islamic women and whether or not you agree with the burqa is irrelevant. That's not how you influence or change that conversation.

He cannot work in a team and would be a terrible terrible leader for this country.

HannahnotAgnes · 08/08/2018 17:34

I completely agree Love.

annandale · 08/08/2018 17:41

If he'd said 'I don't think 12 cm heels should be banned but women who wear them look like whores or strippers' it wouldn't have been great either. He's presumably been employed to write this Telegraph column to stir up 'controversy' and get himself talked about. Fucking worked. Just like his bendy banana nonsense. He's such an unbelievable arsewipe.

NewPapaGuinea · 08/08/2018 17:44

My god, the actions and lies that MP’s spout daily that cause actual damage to people’s lives and one says some controversial comments and everyone is baying for his blood. Priorities are totally backwards. No wonder this country gets shafted by the Government.

LoveInTokyo · 08/08/2018 17:49

NewPapaGuinea

Maybe you should ask the Zaghari-Ratcliffe family what they think about this particular MP’s actions and lies, and whether they have caused any actual damage to people’s lives.

NewPapaGuinea · 08/08/2018 17:53

Well there we go, people should be angry about that rather than his latest comments. Thanks for proving my point.

DarlingNikita · 08/08/2018 17:56

Well there we go, people should be angry about that rather than his latest comments. Thanks for proving my point.

It doesn't prove your point in the slightest. Both of these are examples of Johnson's lack of care about how his actions and words impact on other people. His casual racism about veiled women in the Telegraph column is very much on the same continuum as his behaviour towards Nazarin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and, perhaps more egregiously still, feeds into the narrative that non-white people are somehow fairer game/less important than white people. I wonder what his actions would have been had it been a white British citizen in Iran?

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 08/08/2018 17:57

TBF to Boris, perking it probably takes a bit of skill to write an article about disagreeing with banning the burka which acts as a dog whistle to the right. He deserves a bit of winning for that.

Not sure he’d calculated that the whole lovable buffoon thing doesn’t seem to work quite as well for him these days. Reassuring that this doesn’t seem to be being written off as another Boris ‘gaffe’ in the same way some of his previous episodes have been.

Helmetbymidnight · 08/08/2018 17:57

Well, he's given the red light to everyone to have a pot at a woman in a burkha, hasn''t he?

I really don't get how this can be seen otherwise. This is one of the most influential people in the country, the ex-foreign secretary, high profile MP, next possible pm, massive platform and this is the language he uses, this is how he stoops. Urghhhhh.

NewPapaGuinea · 08/08/2018 18:01

My point is his head is being called for over his burkha comments. If it was being called because of his lies and actions then there’s justification in that. I just think why aren’t people getting angry at the actions that affect people deeper than this latest episode?

LoveInTokyo · 08/08/2018 18:06

Frankly I would quite like to see Boris’s head on a spike for some of the things he has done and said. I agree this is not up there among the worst, but it’s further evidence of what a scrote he is.
