He is clearly racist. He should be thrown out of the Conservative party.

Neither the Tories or Labour are covering themselves in glory at the moment.

I am politically homeless. I don't want the lines of Boris at al or Corbyn and his 'friends' anywhere near number 10.

Both quite frightening prospects.

DarlingNikita · 08/08/2018 13:31

I would have problems teaching someone who was wearing a niqab in the classroom
Might I ask why? Genuine question.

Work dress codes are very often for health and safety purposes (indeed the wording you use, 'flash hoods', jobs involving 'action stations' and 'fire fighting drills' implies that dress codes in these jobs are for precisely those reasons.)

Dress codes enforced for other reasons are coming under scrutiny and pressure, e.g. the case of the woman sent home from a temp job for refusing to wear high heels. One can only hope that this scrutiny and higher public awareness of such cases is a sign of progress towards non-discrimination.

DieAntword · 08/08/2018 13:31

If a student wants to wear a niqab or a burka, when they come to sit their exams, how does the exam centre verify that it is actually them?

A simple solution to that would be to offer an optional female only exam room for those uncomfortable uncovering in front of males.

Cuppaorwine · 08/08/2018 13:32

Mmmm socialism is on the back foot I am afraid it’s been swallowed by momentum.

We have a leader of the opposition who fiddles while Rome burns because he’s lazy and useless and we have a totally ineffective shadow front bench. Mysogynistic and anti Semitic.

I know you love Corbyn so you are blinkered but trust me I am 50 and I honestly can’t remenber a worse or more worrying time in politics.

Cuppaorwine · 08/08/2018 13:33

DieAntwood

Disagree that would be ridiculous in a western democracy.

Cuppaorwine · 08/08/2018 13:35

SillySally

Me too. I bloody well hope some sensible back benchers have a plan. If they do they need to act.

LassWiADelicateAir · 08/08/2018 13:38

A simple solution to that would be to offer an optional female only exam room for those uncomfortable uncovering in front of males

Why should that be offered? Why should we even begin to endorse a viewpoint that male and female students cannot sit in the same exam room unless women are covered up?

DieAntword · 08/08/2018 13:44

Well it depends if you want to help people take their exams while respecting their cultural sensitivities or if you think it's more important to make a political point at their expense. I fully understand that many people prefer the latter but I do think it is chauvinistic.

Cuppaorwine · 08/08/2018 13:44

Agree female only classrooms unless women are covered up??? er no I don’t think so.

Cuppaorwine · 08/08/2018 13:53

Of course it’s mysogynistic.

LassWiADelicateAir · 08/08/2018 13:54

No justification for hiding their boobs either but plenty of cultures make it normative to do so

That is a fatuous argument. We don't recognise people by their breasts.

Well it depends if you want to help people take their exams while respecting their cultural sensitivities

Do you respect "cultural sensitivities" that say homosexual people should be executed? Saying it is someone's "culture sensitivities" doesn't make a horrible thing ok.

DarlingNikita · 08/08/2018 13:57

Do you respect "cultural sensitivities" that say homosexual people should be executed?

That's a bit of a stretch Grin

LassWiADelicateAir · 08/08/2018 14:01

Do you respect "cultural sensitivities " to allow fgm? child brides? forrced marriages? Saying it's my culture doesn't make a bad thing ok.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 08/08/2018 14:04

I know you love Corbyn so you are blinkered but trust me I am 50 and I honestly can’t remenber a worse or more worrying time in politics.

Well, I am old enough to remember the decimation of the 80's. That in around about way has brought us to the point we are at in 2018. Well done on deflecting from Johnson anyway.

SillySallySingsSongs · 08/08/2018 14:05

Me too. I bloody well hope some sensible back benchers have a plan. If they do they need to act.

Completely agree.

Cuppaorwine · 08/08/2018 14:09

Ghosto

You mentioned the 80s decimation. You are right but can you not understand that the decimation you recall was carried out by a strong right wing leader, Thatcher, because the labour opposition was weak and unelectable.

Do you not see the parallels?

Cuppaorwine · 08/08/2018 14:10

Bangs head against the wall

mirialis · 08/08/2018 14:11

I find your analogy very offensive. I don’t see this as racist as it’s about religion. Again religion is a life style choice and Islam is not exclusivity of one racial group

It is not racist even if it were exclusive to one race (which you're right, it isn't). Women wandering around in niqab/burqa do look ridiculous in 21st century "western" countries. My saudi friend says she is mortified when they take their family holidays in Europe with the grandparents and the women and girls have to wear "burkinis" in the pool because they "look like seals in captivity - I keep expecting someone to chuck a fish at us in the hope we'll do a trick".

GhostofFrankGrimes · 08/08/2018 14:15

You are right but can you not understand that the decimation you recall was carried out by a strong right wing leader, Thatcher, because the labour opposition was weak and unelectable.

No! Stop blaming anyone other than the people carrying out the act. Opposition leaders have been portrayed as weak for decades by the gutter press to people gullible enough to believe it. Everyone from Foot and Corbyn (the left) to Brown and Milliband (the "centre"). Thatchers policies were endorsed by the greedy and those with an "I'm alright jack attitiude". Apathy ruled then - who cares for the miners and the dispossessed - I'm alright jack. Who cares for the victims of austerity - I'm alright jack. Thatcher bred a selfish, apathetic culture.

Mishappening · 08/08/2018 14:16

He is entitled to his opinion and to to express it. But he has to take the consequences.

I do not necessarily think that what he has said is racist - the sight of women in burqas contains a whole raft of misogyny that he is entitled to find objectionable.

DarlingNikita · 08/08/2018 14:16

Women wandering around in niqab/burqa do look ridiculous in 21st century "western" countries.

Irrelevant personal opinion.

I'm white and British and on a beach holiday recently (in Europe, heavily white crowd) I thought more than once that I could have done with a burkini for convenience and sun protection. Anyone who thinks I look like a seal, that's their problem.

Cuppaorwine · 08/08/2018 14:19

Ghosto

You are blinded by your Corbyn worship. You can’t acceit facts. You and others like you are decimating labour. But hey you think you are right. Your call. Sad for the country though

Cuppaorwine · 08/08/2018 14:21

Ghosto

I see you missed out the one ‘outstanding’labour leader who won 3 elections but I guess you see Blaire as a red Tory don’t you.

You lot never learn you worship failure and opposition like Corbyn.

DieAntword · 08/08/2018 14:23

Do you respect "cultural sensitivities" that say homosexual people should be executed? Saying it is someone's "culture sensitivities" doesn't make a horrible thing ok. + child brides and all the rest

You might not notice the difference between forcing someone to take off their veil and forcing someone not to execute someone else or not to sell their young daughter as a bride but I think if you think about it long and hard you might see what it is.

Cuppaorwine · 08/08/2018 14:23

No they do look ridiculous and have no place in the 21st century. They are s recent invention by men to control women’s bodies and have no religious basis.

But he was still insulting and just as mysogynistic in his wording.
