Tiny new baby, aww. In the supermarket.
Walking down an aisle.
Boob out completely trying to get the baby to latch.
Wtf.
Does anyone think this is normal? I bf myself for the record.

I agree OP, I know it’s natural. I know baby needs feeding. You can do it discreetly without flopping a boob out on show. Show some decorum! People have no class nowadays, they prefer the attention.

SendYouUpInFlames · 07/08/2018 22:13

not to drip but she was with her partner

Yes, and male partners don't have milk producing boobies for hungry skriking babies.

No actually. Some people struggle with the latch. It's got nothing whatsoever to do with 'attention'. Hmm

Judgemental f*ers are part of the reason why breastfeeding rates are so low in this county. Consider yourself part if the problem.

minnierose3 · 07/08/2018 22:16

@bluntness100 🤣🤣 exactly what I thought

sunflowersinthesky · 07/08/2018 22:17

The only baps I've ever seen on display in a supermarket were in the bread aisle.

Honestly, I'm nearer 60 than 50 and never in my life have I ever seen anyone walking round a shop with their tits hanging out, whether accompanied by a baby or not.

CrochetBelle · 07/08/2018 22:17

I can't imagine that's particularly discreet...

FrazzledRockRed · 07/08/2018 22:19

The with her partner is in reply to people saying her frozen items would have spoiled. She could have sat in the shoe section on a comfortable bench.

chocolateaddicted · 07/08/2018 22:19

@CrochetBelle all jokes aside I have tasted my own milk and often wondered if I could reach that far 😆

chocolateaddicted · 07/08/2018 22:20

It's impressive though a newborn walking round a supermarket. I would ha e noticed that too.

ProseccoPoppy · 07/08/2018 22:20

I have large-ish boobs (currently a FF/G), which are not pert (this is my second baby) and a very hungry baby who hates having any kind of cover over him while feeding. There is a limit to how discreet I can be. My local supermarket does not have a cafe in it so if I wasn’t such a fan of online shopping I can well imagine this being me. I have walked around soft play after my toddler with the baby latched on, and felt perfectly comfortable doing so. Thankfully where I live bf rates seem pretty high.
I am almost never the only mum feeding and staff in all my local shops and cafes have been lovely and supportive. I am sad that some people are so weird about bf.

dontforgetbilly · 07/08/2018 22:22

Some people are lucky and latch/feeding is easy from the start, others may need full boob out and lots of time to get it right especially with a newborn.
Some people are lucky and have a great support network and won't need to end up feeding a newborn half way round the supermarket because someone else went for them.
Personally I think it is great she had the confidence to do this as many might not. I just hope she didn't notice any looks of disapproval from you or others that may dissuade her from feeding in public again.

kaytee87 · 07/08/2018 22:22

Op do you find it weird when you see a man walk about with his chest and nipples out in public?

And I'll re ask my earlier question, would you find it weird if she was giving her baby a bottle?

Lizzie48 · 07/08/2018 22:26

It's not something you see every day in this country, but I worked in Africa on several short-term projects when in my twenties, and it was commonplace for women to breastfeed in public. Breasts are just seen as a food source, which is as it should be.

chocolateworshipper · 07/08/2018 22:28

No - that's definitely not normal.

NotAnotherHeffalump · 07/08/2018 22:29

Why should she stop shopping and sit in the shoe section? Maybe she needs to pick her other kids up soon and she's in a rush or maybe she just wants to get her shopping done and go home and relax without spending an extra half an hour in a shoe department. The baby could have been cluster feeding, in which case she wouldn't have got out of the shoe section before closing time.
Besides all of the above a mother really doesn't need to justify why she chose to feed her baby at that time or in that location. The baby was hungry, she fed it. With her boob. So what?

FrazzledRockRed · 07/08/2018 22:29

Kaytee, unless at the beach I suppose i find male nipples out of place.

I would feed baby without my whole boob out and I seemed to manage.

OP. You're on MN. You have to think that breastfeeding at any time any where is absolutely fine. If you think differently you'll be told your opinion is wrong.

LadyOdd · 07/08/2018 22:31

Perfectly fine in my book, however I have been seen breastfeeding at the pharmacy, lots of bus stops, charity shop, planes, trains, cars, beach the list is massive, I used to be discrete as she was small I could just poke a bit out at 1 year I now wack it out like moby dick surfacing, I hope my own Ahab isn’t lurking here on mn.

AynRandTheObjectivist · 07/08/2018 22:31

Ah yes, the 'why can't everyone just be the same as me' school of debate.

I'M SPARTACUS!

LaurieMarlow · 07/08/2018 22:33

i would feed baby without my whole boob out and I seemed to manage.

And everyone's baby, breasts, letdown, flow etc are DIFFERENT.

Or are you so dumb you don't understand that? Confused

NotAnotherHeffalump · 07/08/2018 22:34

OP - everyone doesn't have exactly the same experience/breastfeeding journey as you though. So she had more of her boob out than you did once upon a time. Are your boobs now the yardstick by which we judge all breastfeeding?

blackteasplease · 07/08/2018 22:35

It's a completely fine thing to do. Probably doesn't happen that much as it would nt be a very easy way to feed a baby, either for Mum or baby if it was newborn. I get backache just thinking about this!

But if she had to get somewhere fast amd get the shopping done in a short time frame needs must. I bet she jad older kids to pick up. It doesn't strike me.as a first time Mum thing to do tbh.

LaurieMarlow · 07/08/2018 22:36

OP. You're on MN. You have to think that breastfeeding at any time any where is absolutely fine

Well babies get hungry anytime/anywhere. So what wouldn't be 'fine' about feeding them?

Touchmybum · 07/08/2018 22:36

TBH I think that situations like this actually put some women off breastfeeding. They then think it's all about getting the tits on display and they don't have the confidence to do that, so they dismiss the idea of breastfeeding. It also riles up the anti-breastfeeding brigade. I love to see women breastfeeding out and about and am truly impressed that this mum could bf walking around because that was a skill I never mastered!!

Being on the larger boob-ed side, I could never latch my babies on discreetly, so in the 4 years I breastfed my 3, I always managed to do it in private, even if it was in the back of the car!
