WIBU to ask for more chips?

We were supposed to be having salad tonight for tea but I —accidentally— ate most of the baby plum tomatoes this morning, so my penance was to pick up a chippy tea on the way home. It wasn’t busy, only one person in being detected when I got there. I ordered a fish butty for DP and a chip butty for me (no kids). I paid £6 all together (live in Yorkshire) and this is all I got!!

The chippy is local, and usually much more generous than this.

Was I being unreasonable to drive back to the chippy, via the bloody temporary traffic lights to ask where the rest of my chips were?

Barm, bread cake, you learn something new everyday Wink

Nebularin · 07/08/2018 19:32

I haven't had one of those since sixth form college days. There were usually only sufficient chips to fill the bread roll, so that's looks rather generous to me, in that they are spilling out.

BarryTheKestrel · 07/08/2018 19:33

My local chippy has started frying oven chips rather than proper home cut chippy chips so I don't have a decent chippy for miles and don't drive.

After seeing that however my pregnancy craving for chippy chips and curry sauce is through the roof!

I hope that now you have more chips you can enjoy your dinner!

middleagedalready · 07/08/2018 19:34

I remember being asked in South Yorkshire if I wanted a breadcake, I said I would like a morning roll, mutual incomprehension!

checkingforballoons · 07/08/2018 19:35

You can’t order a chip butty in any of our local chip shops. DH’s (then boyfriend) face was an absolute picture when he tried to order one when he was visiting me from oop North once. Chip shop worker looked horrified and said she’d sell him chips and a roll, but he’d have to assemble it himself.

cheesemongery · 07/08/2018 19:36

Eyeing up my pasta with disdain wishing it was chips and curry sauce. Yeah, how do you like them apples measly portion pasta?! I'm not even pregnant or hormonal.

cheesemongery · 07/08/2018 19:37

But yes YADNBU very poor show on the chippage.

Cherrysherbet · 07/08/2018 19:38

I'd be shocked too. Glad you went back.

FrangipaniBlue · 07/08/2018 19:38

@DoubleNegativePanda a pie sandwich (yes, this is a thing where I live!) would absolutely blow your mind Grin

Thishatisnotmine · 07/08/2018 19:40

I live in a very chip heavy part of Birmingham and am appauled on your behalf! Dd1 was once given that many chips as a snack from the way home from the chip shop!

FabricBug · 07/08/2018 19:40

The chip shop near where I work is £6 for a mini fish and chips the portion size is tiny and nothing special. It's always busy too Confused.

The chippy near home is £3.50 huge portion and really nice

EdisonLightBulb · 07/08/2018 19:40

We get loads more than that also yorkshire, but I always bin loads. I think the amount is ok but only if you get scraps and a dollop of mushy peas

YearOfYouRemember · 07/08/2018 19:41

I was stupid enough to marry a southerner but I'm heading north next week to see friends and all I can think anoitnis stocking up on fish cakes to bring home for the freezer. Proper ones and not the crap shite that is served in the SE fish and mash ffs

FrangipaniBlue · 07/08/2018 19:41

I am genuinely shocked that there are places where there is no such thing as a chip buttie - I need a list of these places so that I know never to go there on holiday Confused

BarbaraofSevillle · 07/08/2018 19:41

£6 is the going rate in Yorkshire for fish, chips and two breadcakes which is what the OP effectively bought, although that's half a portion of chips at best. You didn't ask for a kids portions by accident did you?

How big was the fish? I hope it had to be split into two to go in the breadcake and hangs off both sides of a dinner plate if left whole.

Can you hint as to where you are? I don't want to go to that chip shop.

SnowOnTheSeine · 07/08/2018 19:42

Argh i now want Chippie shop chips and I'm not in the U.K. Until November Sad

delphguelph · 07/08/2018 19:47

Get a portion of chips and then a buttered barm separate.

^

Genius!!!

I bet you would get more.

ToastyFingers · 07/08/2018 19:48

Not only is it a measly portion, the chips look so pale and sad!

Oh god i want a chippy now.

Nebularin · 07/08/2018 19:50

When I visited Yorkshire I was asked if I wanted scraps with that, bits of batter as it turned out, but I was confused at the time.

Phosphorus · 07/08/2018 19:52

I have never tried a chip butty from a chip shop, because at out local one a small bag of ships is £2.25, and a chip butty is the same price.

I'd be afraid of spending nearly half a £5 note and ending up like the OP. Angry

MarklesMerkin · 07/08/2018 19:52

I think that's plenty for a chip butty - but I think people are being massively unreasonable for calling it a bread roll/cob/barm when it's clearly a bap.

ChopChipCookies · 07/08/2018 19:57

Kids and I used to have chip butties one night a week for dinner. One large portion of chips between us and I would butter lots of white bread with real butter. Melty salty butter. Mmmm. Might start that tradition up again.

Can't imagine curry sauce. Actually in the butty?

Really stingy portion OP. Id expect a full portion of chips too.

KatyaZamolodchikova · 07/08/2018 19:57

@ToastyFingers I did think they looked a little pale but I was willing to overlook that, although they did taste ok, once I got enough of them.

@ToastyFingers I’m sort of on the Bradford/Halifax border. Chippy is in the Bradford side. I’ll be going to my parents local next time on the Halifax side 😂 It definitely wasn’t a child’s portion either, they don’t do a kids menu.

This.
We get 2 buttered barms and a portion of chips for about £3-3.50

I always thought tea was something that you poured boiling water on.
