WIBU to ask for more chips?

We were supposed to be having salad tonight for tea but I —accidentally— ate most of the baby plum tomatoes this morning, so my penance was to pick up a chippy tea on the way home. It wasn’t busy, only one person in being detected when I got there. I ordered a fish butty for DP and a chip butty for me (no kids). I paid £6 all together (live in Yorkshire) and this is all I got!!

The chippy is local, and usually much more generous than this.

Was I being unreasonable to drive back to the chippy, via the bloody temporary traffic lights to ask where the rest of my chips were?

Or if you're really filthy, an oven bottom....

RB68 · 07/08/2018 19:08

I think the point is at 2 to 3 quid for it it is pretty much chips and a roll so portion should have been bigger

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom

Oooh, what's a breadcake? Sounds fantastic :)

KatyaZamolodchikova · 07/08/2018 19:10

Following further discussions with DP we’ve agreed this was around a third of the usual amount of chips.

There’s no shortage of chippys round here, so we’ll just go somewhere else in future.

@Yellowbird54321 a fish butty is a battered fish in a roll that is long & thin rather than round, so it fits the fish in. They used to add a couple of chips if you wanted too, but they’re not doing that anymore either.

My favourite seaside chippy does a fish and chip butty. It is amazing. £3.90 and twice the size of that one.

We usually go Boxing Day and New Year's Day but I feel a summer visit coming on

GabsAlot · 07/08/2018 19:12

we get that amount down here its a chip butty no extras

Is it bad that I've had my dinner, but after reading this it's made me hungry so I'm going to get a chip butty Blush (in my defence I am 9 months pregnant!)

Eliza9917 · 07/08/2018 19:18

I'd expect that if asking for a chip roll.

To get a proper portion I'd have asked for chips with a buttered roll on the side.

RaspberryRipple1963 · 07/08/2018 19:19

YANBU. That is definitely not enough chips for me. Mind you,it's more than we got in the portions when we went to Scotland several years ago. I could not believe the stingy portions that they dished out there. And it wasn't just our bad luck in choosing the wrong chippy,we went to 3 or 4 different ones during the fortnight we were there, and it was the same at all of them. I actually counted the number of chips in a supposedly large portion on one occasion. 12 chips. I couldn't believe it. My DD said that they were doing it under instructions from the government,to try to tackle the obesity crisis!

delphguelph · 07/08/2018 19:20

Are you in a tourist area, OP?

DoubleNegativePanda · 07/08/2018 19:21

I love bread, and I love chips, but I'm having trouble understanding chip butties. Granted, I am not in the UK and they are unheard of where I live. But it looks unbearably stodgy to me (I am so ashamed to say that, i love stodge). Is it dry? I feel like a mouthful of bread and potatoes would be impossible to get down.

Please help me understand because I feel like I should like a chip butty!

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 07/08/2018 19:22

Try they are indeed fantastic but I believe some others weirdos call them a variety of other things-rolls, barms etc, it's a regional thing-I'm from Yorkshire where we use the proper name for things Wink

ImAGoofyGoober · 07/08/2018 19:23

double it’s nicer than it sounds! Especially with a layer of curry sauce

KatyaZamolodchikova · 07/08/2018 19:25

It seems like there is a huge geographical disparity in chip butty expectations.

I’m not in a tourist area @delphguelph, I’m in a semi-rural suburb of a West Yorkshire city.

@a2inthehouse I hope you have a great chip butty! Fingers crossed it’s a decent size!

Thesearmsofmine · 07/08/2018 19:25

Definitely not enough chips there. I’m in West Yorkshire and it would be overflowing with chips here plus the best bit which is scraps of course!

huggybear · 07/08/2018 19:26

Isn't it a chip sandwich though? Not a chip sandwich with a side of chips?!

delphguelph · 07/08/2018 19:26

That tuna/ chick pea salad I had for dinner really hasn't hit the spot now I've read this thread.

AnnieAnoniMoose · 07/08/2018 19:27

Good on you for going back. You should have asked the huffy mare WHO told her to cut back on the portion and why it wasn’t reflected in the price? Stupid moo.

...I very rarely have chips (they upset my blood sugars too much) but I think I might just ignore that if the chippy van still comes into the village Thursday nights. It’s FAR nicer than the actual chippy & hopefully the renovations I’m doing tomorrow will make my blood sugars react less horribly! Salad tonight though, when it’s a bit cooler.

Fiveletters · 07/08/2018 19:27

Get a portion of chips and then a buttered barm separate.

Problem solved Smile

huggybear · 07/08/2018 19:27

Also, it was £6 - i.e. very cheap!!

SweetIcedTea · 07/08/2018 19:28

That wouldn't pass muster as a chip butty where I come from (Midlands). It's a cob (circle of bread) with a big scoop of chips.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 07/08/2018 19:29

I’m on the sunny south coast and had absolutely no idea that you could even get such a thing. I always assumed that people just got out a sliced loaf when they got home. MN is an education!

Bluelonerose · 07/08/2018 19:29

Op I really want a chip butty now. Would it be REALLY bad if I went got some chips even though I've already had dinner and pudding Grin

ednclouda · 07/08/2018 19:30
