Man across the road keeps washing his brand new BMW.

He got it a few weeks back and he's washed it, polished it or vac it daily, on Sunday he spent over four hours cleaning it. I haven't seen him driving it yet & it's parked in his garage all the time.
He's late 30's married to a horrible woman (to us anyway) has two children & works.

What the Hell makes someone love their car so much. It's a piece of metal.

I last washed mine a few years back & it resembles a dustbin inside.

My car is covered in tree sap and road dust but if I had the time I’d be cleaning and polishing, love a sparkly shining car and he probably does too. If his wife is so awful perhaps he’s staying out of her way. It’s not really hurting you or having an impact on your life is it?

ShotsFired · 31/07/2018 13:50

A man opposite me got a very shiny red Audi. He was like your BMW man, you could set your watch by him!

The novelty wore off and after a while it was as grimy as most of the others cars on the road.

Thebluedog · 31/07/2018 13:50

Why not?

SaucyJack · 31/07/2018 13:50

I reckon a few PA blasts of Shania Twain’s “That don’t impress me much” would be in order here.

JuniperBeer · 31/07/2018 13:51

So someone who has spent upwards of £40k on a car likes to look after it. Shock. Horror.

You’re on the other end of the spectrum and I find that just as weird. Why would you drive a dustbin?!
Washing a car protects paintwork, and resale value.

Knittedfairies · 31/07/2018 13:52

Maybe he’s never going to drive it...it’s his escape from the ‘horrible woman.

Wax on, wax off. Wax on, wax off...

TheConstantMoaner · 31/07/2018 13:52

Near mid life crisis?

SadieHH · 31/07/2018 13:52

Ah leave him alone! He loves his new car, so what. I love my car too and it gets regular cleans, not nearly as often as that though. I don't see anything to brag about in having a skip on wheels. Been there done that and hated it.

You haven't made the link?

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 31/07/2018 13:53

I've just bought myself a new car, only ever had old bangers before. When it rained the weekend it made dirty yellow marks on my bonnet so I was out on my drive last nigh washing it off. Im sure for me and him the novelty won't last but bloody hell, cars are so expensive there's nothing wrong with having some pride in them. Personally, I would feel
grubby driving about in a car with rubbish and crap in it but each to their own. Give him a month and it'll be covered in dust and birdshit. Unless of course he prefers his car to his wife and it gives him time away from her.

FilledSoda · 31/07/2018 13:54

He's been enjoying it , that's nice for him.

onemouseplace · 31/07/2018 13:55

My NDN is the same - he also has a man come every 3 months or so and (I assum) retunes the engine and generally primps and preens it.

It amuses me quite a lot, as his previous car was a Focus, so a bit of a jump really!

IfYouDontImagineNothingHappens · 31/07/2018 13:56

So he's married to someone horrible and he's getting out the house. He's finding it pleasurable Smile what's the problem?

Zippitydoodar · 31/07/2018 13:57

@juniper I keep meaning to clean my car but -cant be bothered -- don't have time. I fully understand you've bought a lovely new car and want to look after it but every day for hours!

@saucy that made me laugh!

The cross out failed. I don't have a problem and it doesn't impact my life at all.
I find it rather amusing & a little sad to see tbh.

Well imagine if you was living with the horrible wife don’t you think you’d want to wash your car just to escape the sour faced thing you were married too? I bloody would!

I’ve got nice cars and they are hoovered weekly and washed very regularly too, love a shiny car I don’t like them to be dirty.

HollowTalk · 31/07/2018 14:02

Why is it sad to see? He might have always aspired to buy a car like that. Now that he has one, he might be proud of himself and unable to believe he's actually done it. He's taking good care of it - why wouldn't he when he's paid a lot of money for it?

Lethaldrizzle · 31/07/2018 14:03

He's transferring his affection from his wife to his car

Aquamarine1029 · 31/07/2018 14:04

It's therapy to him.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 31/07/2018 14:05

He's just happy playing with his new toy! Nothing sad about that - we all enjoy nice things.

viques · 31/07/2018 14:05

My neighbour is a bit like this, but he is a mini cab driver so I can understand why. I once came home at midnight and he was out there with the chamois!

Raver84 · 31/07/2018 14:06

It may have been the car he has always wanted and is enjoying it . Whats it got to with you? I think the weird thing is you watching him to be honest.

DGRossetti · 31/07/2018 14:07

Can anyone remember a film ? TV episode ? Where a baddie managed to hide loads of stuff in his car by forever washing it ?

Was my first thought when I saw the thread title. Make of that what you will Smile.

hamburgers · 31/07/2018 14:09

Aw bless him. He's obviously excited and happy with his new car. He must have been saving up for years for this car and is so thrilled he has finally managed to buy it and now he's enjoying it. Leave him alone.

PavlovianLunge · 31/07/2018 14:11

I find it rather amusing & a little sad to see tbh.

And that’s fine, but by the same token, he might find it amusing and sad that people spend multiple hours watching telly, or glued to MN.

Horses for courses, and all that.
