He got it a few weeks back and he's washed it, polished it or vac it daily, on Sunday he spent over four hours cleaning it. I haven't seen him driving it yet & it's parked in his garage all the time.
He's late 30's married to a horrible woman (to us anyway) has two children & works.

What the Hell makes someone love their car so much. It's a piece of metal.

I last washed mine a few years back & it resembles a dustbin inside.

DH and I both have nice cars. We didn't get them to impress anyone. I'm quite surprised by PP who suggested playing 'it doesnt impress me much'. Some chip on your shoulder. Some of us work hard and like shiny, beautiful things. I don't wash mine ever but DH would. I grew up very comfortable, he didn't so maybe he just appreciates them more and want to take care of them. What's wrong with that?

LavendarLove · 01/08/2018 19:28

Here here! Some people can't stand the fact others have nice things and are proud

Amanduh · 01/08/2018 19:38

So he wants to keep it looking nice, so what? Maybe a bit ott but he has pride in it, fair enough I say. Maybe he thinks it’s sad you drive a rubbish dump on wheels.

forevernotyoung · 01/08/2018 19:50

Avoiding spending time with his horrible wife??
Grin

Maybe he spent many years working and saving up for it? And is now appreciating the hard slog it's been for him?

Shockers · 01/08/2018 19:52

DH has recently bought a very expensive car and he’s constantly cleaning it because he wants to protect the paintwork for resale value.

I clean my UP! every month whether it needs it or not Grin.

blaaake · 01/08/2018 19:56

I've got a £70k Audi and it gets cleaned once a year for it's service Grin however DH cleans his vw every second Sunday, must be a man thing Confused

Starleaf · 01/08/2018 20:00

I had a neighbour where I used to live that only washed his car in the rain!

locochat · 01/08/2018 20:03

Only opened this to say he reminds me of one of our old neighbours but Grin at HebeMumsnet

That's disgusting and just as weird as spending 4 hours lovingly polishing it. I hate getting into friends' cars which are knee deep in sweetie wrappers and discarded rubbish. Totally gross.

CountessCon · 01/08/2018 20:06

This baffled me when I moved out of London to the type of village where, if someone doesn’t pick up after their dog, laminated photographs of the offending shite appear on fences threading legal action, and a report with lots of CAPITAL LETTERS appears in the local newsletter. On weekend mornings, men are either washing their cars with incredible thoroughness or cutting the lawn with incredible thoroughness, or both. I had never before seen someone lean in to clean the underside of the car.

I conclude it’s some kind of lower-middle-class ritual.

MumsTheWordYouKnow · 01/08/2018 20:26

OK he may well wash the paintwork off, but really, a thread about it? Lol!

MrsRainbowJohnson · 01/08/2018 20:39

Omg at first i thought you were talking about one of my neighbours lol only difference he doesnt have kids.

He is constantly washing his BMW, if not his car then his motorbike. If not his motorbike then fixing and revving it. If not that then mowing his lawn at 9pm!

Zippitydoodar · 01/08/2018 20:48

@amanduh very true. My car is also old and very dinted after being hit by a skip truck that then drove off, but it goes and I like it.
@ beach I cleaned it yesterday after being inspired by my neighbour!

I thought dirt held cars together and if you washed them they fell apart?
That's what DH told me anyway.

cheesemongery · 01/08/2018 20:55

That's nothing, my stepdad used to vacuum his drive when he had it paved. I near wet myself when I pulled up (he hadn't heard me) to hear from the little boy next door - 'ere Dad! That man's hoovering his drive again!'

RomanyRoots · 01/08/2018 20:55

I came on to say small penis so needs an extension.
The same as red sports cars or red any type of car. Grin
My dh has an old black banger, wouldn't have it any other way.
We don't have a driveway so nowhere to wash it, he goes to car wash occasionally.

SeamusMacDubh · 01/08/2018 21:03

Would only bother me if there was a hosepipe ban and he was wasting water by washing and washing it.

Otherwise, I wouldn't care, but I like to people watch my neighbours too Grin

JustHereForThePooStories · 01/08/2018 21:04

Jeez OP, you have an awful chip on your shoulder about what this man and woman can and can’t do.

If he drove an old BMW, how frequently would you deem appropriate for him to wash it?

How about a brand new Hyundai i10?

Katherine2626 · 01/08/2018 22:08

Poor man - nothing more exciting to do with his time.

jade9390 · 01/08/2018 22:20

He probably washes it to get out of the house, if his wife is nasty. Why are you bothered, it is none of your business

sayanythingelse · 01/08/2018 22:26

Funny you should say that. I was hoovering my car out today and I noticed that there were loads of bits of stray grass on my driveway and in the garden. I did strongly consider hoovering the driveway but decided against it incase the neighbors saw me Grin

Cornishclio · 01/08/2018 22:36

I like to wash my car every couple of weeks, more often if it is really dirty. Every day seems excessive but not cleaning yours for years just makes you look lazy and slovenly. No way could I put up with a car with loads of rubbish inside. Maybe you could spend half an hour cleaning yours rather than keeping track of how often your neighbour washes his?

Zippitydoodar · 01/08/2018 22:39

How many times?! I have cleaned my car!!
He hasn't washed it today.

Maybe he saw this thread HAHAHA

CosyLulu · 02/08/2018 07:58

A woman who parks next to us is a car wash performance artist. We’re in a flat with an underground carpark so she has to drive up to the square open space which is in the heart of the flats so therefore visible from every flat’s back window. Then, in skimpy shorts and a bikini top, she spends 2.5 hours washing and polishing her soft top Audi. Every Saturday morning and sometimes in the week.

What is the meaning of this then? The car is never dirty so the washing must be for show. She has a v friendly dh so no need to escape from him.

Dh and I have nicknamed her ‘Washer Woman’ or Washbosh for short. I guess this makes us bad ...
