He got it a few weeks back and he's washed it, polished it or vac it daily, on Sunday he spent over four hours cleaning it. I haven't seen him driving it yet & it's parked in his garage all the time.
He's late 30's married to a horrible woman (to us anyway) has two children & works.

What the Hell makes someone love their car so much. It's a piece of metal.

I last washed mine a few years back & it resembles a dustbin inside.

Well I must be evil.

crimsonlake · 31/07/2018 17:26

Every time I get in my car I think to myself I must clean the inside, every time I give someone a lift I have to apologise for the mess. It is 13 years old and has been washed a couple of times. I did have it valeted once, but it steamed up for months inside afterwards. I gave it a good clean a couple of years back as someone said it would help it pass it's MOT.

There is something quite sad about adults who takes pleasure from these things. It's quite childlike. I don't know why it makes me sad, it shouldn't really seeing as it makes them happy yet I don't know, there just something a bit sad about it.

TrudeauGirl · 31/07/2018 17:44

Nothing sad or odd about it. He loves his new car. Leave him be if it makes him happy. :-)

NotACleverName · 31/07/2018 17:45

Why is it sad, Racecardriver? Not everyone wants to drive around in a shit tip like the OP seems happy to do.

Glumglowworm · 31/07/2018 17:46

A house on my street has three fancy cars that live under special covers. The only time I see them is when they’re having their batteries charged because they go flat because they’re never driven! The family has a normal car which actually gets used day to day.

It’s not how I would choose to spend my time and money, but it’s their choice and (assuming no hosepipe bans are in place in your area) not hurting anyone or affecting anyone else in anyway.

SweetSummerchild · 31/07/2018 17:47

Maybe replace the word ‘sad’ with ‘sneer’ and that would be a more honest reflection of what you actually feel Racecardriver.

Slartybartfast · 31/07/2018 17:47

My neighbour and his wife who I detest, cleans both his van and his wife's car every Sunday, coincidence that they are not nice people?

Slartybartfast · 31/07/2018 17:48

It seems quite old fashioned

Slartybartfast · 31/07/2018 17:49

I occasionally go to the car wash but it scared me and my dog was absolutely terrified

sxround · 31/07/2018 17:52

He is not harming you so what is the issue?

adreamofspring · 31/07/2018 17:54

It used to make me sad when I was a teenager and saw the neighbors on my parents' cul de sac doing this. I too thought it was either wife avoiding or putting having a shiny piece of metal over having a life and experiences/fulfilling relationships.

That was until I moved to my own house a few years back and I couldn't park on my own drive while having work done. I parked under some trees down the road and my motor got covered on sap etc. My lovely neighbor a few doors down gave it a little clean while he was doing his own.

I was a bit Confused at first but he said "I love cleaning cars. It's my hobby". I guess it's like people that enjoy cross stitch or jigsaw puzzles or whatever. Not my thing but I get why it might be a form of relaxation.

Time40 · 31/07/2018 18:10

He used a toothbrush to clean the wheel trims!

Oh dear. I did that last week, when I was having a Major Car Titivating Session. I did the bumpers with Back to Black, too.

I don't do major titivating every week, though.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 31/07/2018 18:12

Some people just like making things shine. A former colleague works on tarmac tippers, and he cleans the tipper body and tailgate after every single load. The cab, wheels and running gear are showroom. There's also a white lace pelmet around the top of the windscreen. I admire him, although I wouldn't want to be him.

YeTalkShiteHen · 31/07/2018 18:14

We’ve got a nice new home and new furniture and I clean it regularly, because it’s still a huge novelty having shiny new things after years of second hand/scruffy stuff, so I’m determined to keep it nice. Maybe he’s the same with his car?

Or he’s avoiding his wife?

MrsMoastyToasty · 31/07/2018 18:24

I'm reminded of the quote from the film Personal Services.
"BCSD. Big car, small dick"

ForalltheSaints · 31/07/2018 18:25

Pride in keeping something looking clean, be it a car, a house or a garden, is nothing to be ashamed of, but this seems extreme.

Maybe the over the top cleaning will cease once it gets colder.

Armchairanarchist · 31/07/2018 18:32

Life's too short to clean your own car. Mine's new so I don't allow eating in it but keep on top of it with a very nice man that comes put once a month to valet it for £25.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 31/07/2018 18:52

I Would LOVE to see a pristine tipper truck with a crisp white lace pelmet!

Alwayscommuting · 31/07/2018 19:04

I got my first ever car last weekend and it's not new but it's new to me. I was really upset to see it was already dirty yesterday and have plans for a full valet courtesy of my cordless dyson this weekend.

LookAtIt · 31/07/2018 19:28

OP, what do you think about gardeners who are fussy about their lawns or hedges or whatever. I love keeping my hedges and lawn really tidy. I know that no one else cares about them but I find it relaxing and enjoyable to keep them just so. The hedges at the front of the house get a wee trim at least once a week. I KNOW it's a bit nuts but I'm not doing anyone any harm.
I don't clean my car that often but I love doing it when I do.

I also love jet washing the pathways and patios. I'm mindful of wasting water otherwise I'd be out there all the time.

I don't see my hobbies are any less pointless than MN'ing or watching the TV.

It seems like everyone else has watched Love Island 🌴 - no that's surely more pointless than cleaning a car.

Xenia · 31/07/2018 19:29

People to keep things nice tend to be good people, not bad people.

not everyone can afford to pay someone else to clean their car. I do my own, certainly not every week but I don't want to pay someone else to and our local car wash has closed down anyway.

The days when the working classes took pride in cleaning their doorstep every single day hopefully have not entirely disappeared. Cleaning is not a personal foible. It can be a moral good.

Zippitydoodar · 31/07/2018 19:40

@look I think it's good to have a nice garden & lawn and certainly not nuts to keep it neat & tidy.

I'm gutted love island is over Sad

There you go, he cleans his car and you watch Love Island. I bet he would think you as crazy as you think he is.

I think you are both crazy 😁

Zippitydoodar · 31/07/2018 19:55

@look I agree. I'm very ashamed of myself. Blame my nieces, they made me watch it.
